News Service) V A T I C A N C I T Y, — In a speech to the College of Car dinal the newly elected Pontiff explained why he had chosen the name John. His Holiness Pope John XXIII recalled that John was the name of his father, of the two Saints closest to Jesus and of a long line of successors to St. Peter. The Holy Father also noted that it is the name of the parish in which he was baptized as well as of his cathedral, the Arch may We go as far as the shed ding of blood.” basilica of St. John Lateran. The Pope told the cardinals: “We shall be called John. This name is dear to Us because it is the name of Our Father. “It is dear to Us because it is the titular name of the humble parish where We were baptized. It is the solemn name of in- numberable cathedrals spread throughout the world — first and foremost of which is Our cathedral, the sacrosanct Lateran basilica.” Pointing to the great number of Johns among previous popes, the Holy Father said: “We have perferred to cover the littleness of Our name with this magnificent sucession of Roman pontiffs.” The Pope went on to ask: “And St. Mark the Evangelist, the glory and protector of Our beloved Venice, he whom St Peter, the Prince of the Apostles and the first Bishop of the Roman Church, loved as his own son, was not his first name also John?” He loves the name of John “in a very special way,” the Pope declared, because it was the name of the two Saints who were closest to Christ. “John the Baptist, the precur sor of Our Lord, was certainly not the Light, but he was a witness of the Light. He was truly invincible testimony of truth, justice and liberty, in preaching, in baptism, in pen ance and in blood shed,” the Pope said, continuing: , “And the other John, Disciple and Evangelist, favorite of Christ and of His most sweet Mother, who at the Last Supper rested on the Lords’ chest, derived from this that charity of which he was the living and Apostolic flame until advanced old age. “May it be God’s will that both of the Johns cry out in all of the Church that Our most humble pastoral ministry —- which follows that of Pius XII, Our mourned predecessor, and those of his predecessors, so glorious in the Church — may call upon the clergy and all the people to ‘make ready the way of the Lord . . . and the crooked way shall be made straight, and the rough was smooth; and all mankind shall see the salvation of God (Luke 3, 4-6).’ ” “And may John the Evange list who, as he himself testified, took with him Mary, the Mother of Christ and Our Mother, may he together with her echo the same cry, which is concerned with the life and joy of the Cath olics and Apostolic Church as well as the peace and prosperity of all peoples.” Urging his people to love one another “because this is the greatest commandment of the Lord,” the Pontiff concluded: “May God kindly grant, ven erable brothers, that We, bear ing the same name as the first of the series of supreme pontiffs, may with the help of Divine Grace have his same sanctity of life and steadfastness of mind and, if it is the will of God, MARRIAGES o o I MILLER-WYMAN f O O AUGUSTA — M i s-s Ashlyn Teresa Wyman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lindsay Wy man of Augusta, and Mr. Dessie Ford Miller III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dessie Ford Miller Jr, of Augusta were married October 11th at St. Mary’s-on-the-Hill Church, Rev.
