POPE SENDS CONDOLENCES TO DETROIT SEE DETROIT, (NC) — A message was received here from His Holiness Pope John XXIII ex pressing “heartfelt sympathy” with the Archdiocese of Detroit on the death of Cardinal Ed ward Mooney. The fact that the cablegram was signed by the Pope himself rather than a Vatican official was regarded as unusual and a sign of the new Pontiff’s special affection for the late Cardinal. The message is believed to be his first to the U. S. since be coming Pope. The message said: “We hasten to express our heartfelt sympathy with the Archdiocese of Detroit in the loss it has sustained by the death of its beloved Ordinary, the late Cardinal Mooney. “With the assurance of our prayers for the happy repose of his soul, we also ask Al mighty God to console and com fort the clergy, Religious and faithful of the bereaved arch diocese, and in pledge of that heavenly favor we impart to them our paternal Apostolic blessing.” Good character is still the best collateral for a loan. Eleven In Group Which Represented President Eisenhower WASHINGTON, (NC) — Eight persons accompanied the three-member delegation repre senting President Eisenhower at the cornation of His Holiness Pope John XXIII.
