THRONG IN ST. PETER'S—Here is a view of the 300-foot-high interior of St. Peter’s in
Rome, thronged with 25,000 persons during the coronation of Pope John XXIII.—(Radiophoto).
REPRESENT U. S. AT CORONATION—Among the national
missions at the Coronation ceremonies for Pope John XXIII in
St. Peter’s Basilica were these three personal representatives of
President Dwight D. Eisenhower of the United States. Left to
right: Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell, Mrs. Clare Booth
Luce, former U. S. Ambassador to Italy, and Deputy Under
secretary of State, Robert Murphy.
POPE JOHN XXIII IS ENTHRONED—This photo is believed to be the first photo taken
of Pope John XXIII enthroned during the coronation Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. On the Holy
Father’s right is Cardinal Canali, on his left is Cardinal Ottaviani, and Msgr. Enrico Dante in
the immediate forefront, and to Cardinal Canali’s right is a nobleman assistant at the papal

A NEW POPE IS CROWNED—-On the balcony of St. Peter’s
Basilica, Rome, on November 4, Msgr. Enrico Dante, Vatican
prefect of ceremonies, adjusts the triple tiara on the head of
Pope John XXIII, during the outdoor ceremony. His Eminence

the coronation rites in St. Peter's Basilica on Navember 4. They are, left to right, (middle row)
Don Giovanni Battista, nephew; Sister Angela, niece; Assunta Roncalli, sister; Alfredo, Zaverio
