Regarding grace in its wide
theological sense of any divine
supernatural gift, the author
shows the priceless nature of
such gifts as spiritual child
hood, spiritual joy, light, and
peace, of vocation, and of pov
erty of spirit, of motherhood,
and of friendly angels, all of
them showered on humanity be
cause of the miracles of Bethle

These joyful meditations open

The illustrations, in black,
white and brick-red, were
drawn by Rafaello Busoni, an
Italian, trained in Switzerland,
who came to America in 1939
after working in Paris and Ber

alive. Young children will en
joy them.
The story of the Holy Family
is told, in these two books, from
two viewpoints—Mary’s, by Sis
ter Mary Jean Dorcy; and Jos

though each tells substantially
the same story, there are dif
ferences in accent. And since,
traditionally, “never enough is
said about Mary,” there is no
end to the possible ways of tell

LATE DAWN, Elizabeth Van-

(Reviewed by Flannery
O’Connor)
This is the spiritual autobio
graphy of an artist, now a mem
ber of the Catholic Evidence
Guild, who was brought up in
a materialist atmosphere with
only a few depressing religious
encounters in her youth. After
unsuccessful psychoanalysis for
recurrent depression and a near
addiction to morphia, she fell
into the Church in one of those
conversions for which there is
no logical explanation except
grace.
It is always exciting to read a

tual love as a Breath in which
the whole of their being is
breathed.
I suppose that most people
who have made an effort to hear
what God is telling us about His
innermost seif have had much
the same experience as I. The
first time I heard a really com
petent lecture upon the Trinity,
I followed it well enough, ad
mired it, but made nothing very
much of it. A year later I heard
a second lecture, and this time I
think I grasped all that the lec
turer was saying, I was lost in
admiration at the intellectual
perfection of the doctrine’s
structure, and from that time on
I could have told anyone else
the doctrine as it had been told
to me.
But in no sense was it alive
in my m-frid; it was simply an
intellectual possession, some
thing I could visit when I felt
like it and enjoy visiting, then
put away again into the back
of the mind. It was a year or
two later that another series of
lectures came my way, and the
doctrine was at last alive. For
most people something like that
happens — first an intellectual
response, then a vital response,
till the doctrine possess the
mind, and the mind would be
desolate without it.
It was at the Last Supper, as
St. John tells us, that Our Lord
gathered together all those hints
he had been giving of a plurali
ty within the one God, and gave
His apostles the fullest state
ment of the doctrine of the
Trinity. Thus it was just before
He died as man that He told
us of the deathless life He lives
within the Godhead. To return

It is only “in effect” that any

Q. What is the papal "liara,"
and what does it signify?
A. The “tiara” or “triregnum”
is a papal crown, about a, foot
and a half in height, worn by
the Supreme Pontiff during his
coronation and at certain other
high solemnities. (At liturgical
functions the mitre is worn.)
THE TIARA RESEMBLES a
triple crown, with two lappets
attached to the back. The crown

stones. No definite juridical sig

tiara, although various mystical
interpretations are traditionally nifies the plentitude of power
