ST. DOMINIC, by Leonard von Matt and Marie Humbert Vicaire, O.P., (Regnery, $7,00). (Reviewed by Rt. Rev. Msgr. T. James McNamara) The biography is unique in that the emphasis is more on pictures than on narration. In deed, it is described as “A pic torial Biography” and as such it fails its mark, since the pic tures, while splendidly done and highly illustrative, detract from the biographical narrative and do not obviously complement it. It may be argued that since it is a pictorial biography the authors intended that the nar rative should be purely inci dental. If so, then to the average reader the use of the term, bi ography, is misleading. It is true that the pictures do give a feel of the contemporary period of St. Dominic’s life but the ar rangement of them, does not dramatize fixedly the biograph ical data, which the average reader seeks. The pictures are good; the narrative satisfying to the critical reader of history but together under a single cover they seem to fall short of “A Pictorial Biography.” This is not to say that the book lacks value or fails totally in its presenta tion. It certainly is defeating in its objective f ox the average reader. But then, perchance, the authors did not have in mind LIBERAL - DIVIDENDS 01 SAVINGS Savings received by the 10th Earn Dividends for That Month PO. 7-9774 TiS-OSTY FEDERAL Association Savings & Loan 606 South Central Ave. Hapeville RATE RATE BROOKHAVEN FEDERAL SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION / 4018 Peachtree Road Atlanta 19 Go ■ / CURRENT Accounts Open by Mail-CE. 7-6406 CURRENT R. One more word about the average reader and this pictorial biography of St. Dominic; Lourdes and this eentennary year are too much in his mind for him to read of St. Dominic and find nothing con clusive in reference to the Ros ary. PRODIGAL SHEPHERD, by Father Ralph Pfau and A1 Hirshberg (Lippincott, $3.95), (Reviewed by Cecelia L. Hines) A1 Hirshberg’s crisp and re- portorial style has done much to raise this personal narrative of an alcoholic priest above the level of the maudlin sentimen- tility so notable in books of this kind. In Prodigal Shepherd we meet Father Ralph Pfau who tells with honesty and humility of his inner conflicts and scru ples from his seminary days, after he became a priest and teacher, the beginning and in crease of his social drinking, his nervous breakdowns and hos pitalization, his growing resent ments and, finally, his change to a life of sobriety as a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. Fa ther Phau has not only been able to do something about the problems of alcohol in his own life but has been an inspiration to countless others. Father Pfau has been a tire less worker in helping these un fortunates. During the past ten years he has travelled 750,000 miles conducting retreats and giving lectures to over 200,000 people. He has also founded the National Clergy Conference on Alcoholism which recommends courses to be given to young seminarians to prepare them for pastoral counseling in this diffi cult field. Father Pfau now lives in the Good Shepherd Convent in In dianapolis which is a beehive of activity. Three Magdalen nuns take care of his secretarial work and telephone calls come to him, all around the clock, from all parts of the world. He still thinks that Alcoholics Anony mous is the only avenue of re covery open to alcoholics, even though the structure of the group is still far from perfect. His astounding relation of his own degraduation in order to help others introduces to us a Shepherd who is humble enough to call himself a Prodi gal. THE FAITHFUL AT MASS, by William S. Abell (Helicon Press, $2.75). (Reviewed by Elizabeth Hester) This little book is a pleasure to hold in the hand. Its format and binding are a credit to the publishers, a new firm we wel come and wish well. The contents are brief, con taining a first section which ex plains in very simple terms the meaning and the history of the Mass. This is followed by a sec tion in which a complete? Mass (with variable parts from Trini ty Sunday) is given on the left page and an explanation, or am plification, on the right. The great advantage of this over the Mass explanations that general ly preface any good Missal, of course, is that the phrase of the Mass being discussed is side by side with the explanatory text. In addition, Mr. Abell’s book is very lucidly written, and he manages to get into one consoli dated text dozens of needed explanatory details that I can otherwise only remember learn ing from perhaps two dozen or more seperate sources. The Faithful at Mass strikes me as a particularly suitable gift to the adult convert. And for the semi-annual brush-up on the meaning of the Mass which is so often recommended to the general laity, it is ideal for any body.
