(By John Travers Moore)
There was talk among the
shepherds that an angel had ap
peared, and more were to come,
but the little shepherd of Beth
lehem had no great hope of see
ing Heavenly visitors or hear
ing the angels sing. His favorite
lamb was missing again, and he
was busy looking for it, which
naturally required the attention
of both — but mostly that of
the little shepherd.
For some reason, his favorite
lamb caused him more trouble
than all the rest of the flock and
kept him continually looking
after it to make sure it was
here, and not there or someplace
else. Perhaps this was because
he considered it the finest lamb
in all the land of Judea. And
perhaps it really was ■— not
that it looked much different
from many other lambs, except
that it was whiter and more
lively, and liked to romp and
play — and it belonged to the
little shepherd.
THE STAR IN THE POOL
But there were times when it
tried his patience, and tonight
was one of them, for the little
shepherd had wanted very, much
to stay on the hilltop . and
watch for the angels and the
golden star — the largest ever
to shine on Bethlehem, and the
one that would guide the shep
herds to the newborn King!
Of course the little shepherd
knew exactly where he would
find the lamb — down at the
bottom of the hill, where it al
ways hid, looking at the stars
on the pool.
And just as he found it there,
he tripped, and grumbled slight
ly and even frowned at it, which
was considered punishment
coming from the little shep
herd. But he carefully picked it
up and carried it back to the
fold.
He thought that he had
caught a glimpse of a large gold
en Star among the other stars
reflected on the pool, and just to
make certain — he looked up.
There in the sky it was: A star
over Bethlehem — and it must
have been there all the time,
for the little shepherd had not
thought to look for it so directly
overhead. It seemed curious
that when everyone else was
looking up for the Star, he had
had to look down to find it.
But he had found it, and that
was what was important, even
though he first had to discover
it on earth before he saw it in
heaven.
When he reached the top of
the hill, he made the lamb lie
down beside him, to keep it
from causing him further trou
ble, at least for the moment.
And he talked to it as he often
did when the night was particu
larly beautiful and peaceful and
he was the only shepherd on
the hill.
He had heard about the Star
that was now shining bright and
golden directly over Bethlehem,
and of what the angel had said
to the shepherds, and what the
shepherds had said to him. And
of course he told this to his
favorite lamb.
GOING TO SEE A KING
He told it that in two shakes
of a lamb’s tail he could go to
Bethlehem and even see the
newborn King, though he knew
this was not very likely, because
one does not juSt say “I am go
ing to see a king,” and go, and
be allowed always to see one.
But two shakes of a lamb’s
tail are also not very easy to see,
and the little shepherd was quite
certain that he very possibly
might have missed seeing them.
Besides, he wanted so badly to
go to the wonderful happening
he thought that if he hurried,
even now he might not be too
late to hear the angels sing.
Before he left he told the
lamb that he was not going far,
which was true. But he did not
say that he was going to Beth
lehem to see a King.
By the time he reached Beth-
I lehem the little shepherd, who

wonder where to find the King,
for he knew that there were no
palaces in Bethlehem. And
when he passed all the dark
houses he felt certain that he
was too late — until he hap
pened to remember what the
shepherds had said, and looked
up, aod saw that the Star was
over a stable.
A WONDERFUL SIGHT
At the moment the Star was
larger, and even more brilliant
than before as it cast its golden
light down on the stable roof.
The little shepherd went
quietly up to the stable door,
and opened it just as quietly—
and peeked in.
No one can say how long he
stood there, breathless with all
he saw. There were Three Kings
who had come bearing gifts for
the greatest King on earth, and
there was a holy light above the
manger, where a Babe lay fast
asleep. There was a Woman
with a beautiful face and white
hands, and with her was a Man
of kindness. They were at that
side of the manger, and the
Three Kings were at this, and
above were angels, and even a
small gray donkey was looknig
over the headboards of the crib.
All were there to adore the new
born King — hut no one was at
the foot of the manger!
The little shepherd, startled at
his discovery, continued to stare
at the empty place and wished
with all his heart that he could
be there, and place a gift there,
and fill the small empty place at
the feet of the King.
He was so startled as he
thought about it that he stepped
backward and very nearly
stumbled, but this time there
was no lamb to frown at for his
clumsiness, which had been
heard even by angels! To be
caught where he felt he did not
belong was exactly what the
little shepherd did not want to
happen, but was exactly the
very thing that did. Because he
was upset, he made matters
worse by trying to hurry away,
and stumbled again — just as a
small angel with freckles tapped
him on the shoulder.
THE FRECKLED ANGEL
The little shepherd, not afraid,
but quite worried that he had
behaved so, felt somewhat reas
sured when he. saw that the
freckled angel was grinning and
had a finger to his lips. He mo
tioned the little shpherd to fol
low, and led him away from the
stable and whispered in his ear.
‘‘A—lamb?” said the little shep
herd.
And the freckled angel grin
ned again and nodded.
So there was no doubt that
even a small lamb might he a
gift for a King.
The little shepherd was ex
cited, for the freckled angel
said that he would accompany
him to the fold and perhaps
help him select his gift, seeing
that it was fit to be given.
On the way they talked of it.
but because they had to glance
at one another now and then the
better to hear, the little shep
herd turned his attention to
freckles — for the angel had
quite as many as he. And he
asked the small angel how it
could be that he brought freck
les from Heaven.
And the freckled angel told
him that once he came upon a
child who was so unhappy be
cause of freckles, he felt sorry
for him, and asked if he might
have them instead of the other.
And this was done.
REWARD FOR SACRIFICE
And since the King of Heaven
had considered this quite a sac
rifice in the light it was made,
he had rewarded the freckled
angel with the honor of being
one of the angels of Bethlehem.
The small angel had also been
given the opportunity of losing
the freckles, but surprisingly,
after a while, he had, grown to
like them because they remind
ed him of sunshine on the earth,
so he had asked and been per
mitted to keep them for all time
to come .
“Some like freckles — and
some don’t,” said the little shep
herd. But the way he said it
left no doubt as to what he
thought about having to have
them.
When he and the freckled an
gel reached the fold, a lamb
came running up to meet them.
The little shepherd stopped
short. A peculiar thought was
tugging at his heart as if try
ing to twist it. A lamb had to
be chosen, and he wondered
why, of all times, his favorite
lamb had to come running up
to him when it usually strayed
or hid and was the other way
around. He almost wished it was
down on the other side of the
hill, looking at stars in the pool.
He glanced at the freckled
angel out of the corner of his
eye, and wondered also if the
angel might select the one who
even now was being frowned
at — a little bit. But the freck
led angel did not choose it, nor
any at all, but asked him to,
make the choice.
FIT FOR A KING?
The little shepherd looked
down, and speculated seriously
as to whether or not that par
ticular lamb was fit for a king.
And then there was the matter
that it might be lonesome, and
whether or not a king would
care for it as he did, and under
stand that it did not always
mind, because it was the way
it was, for it was the finest lamb
in all Judea.
He felt that his heart was go
ing to cry if he hesitated much
longer, so he stopped and pick
ed up the lamb and told the
small angel that he had made
his choice. It might be that the
place at the foot of the manger
was no longer empty. Perhaps
someone had brought a gift and
placed it there, and there would
be no room for a lamb. But if
there was, the little shepherd
knew who was going to stand
there, and he smiled as he re
membered the beautiful and
holy sight in the manger, and
he knew that a lamb would
make it complete.
He started to return to Beth-
