A BETTER WORK GLOVE FOR EVERY PURPOSE 1700 MAPLE STREET ROME, GEORGIA Wreathed In Christmas Beauty (Helen Houston Boileau) Each year brings new and dazzling beautiful Christmas bangles and baubles, and excit ing new ideas for decorating, yet in spite of all this modern glamour, certain favorites man age to hold their own, year af ter year. Wreaths, for instance, remain a loved and lovely sym bol of the Holiday Season. There is a refined and reas suringly traditional beauty about wreaths, whether hanging over an open fireplace, used as a welcome piece on the door, or hung as a friendly greeting in a window. These are long fav orite uses, and, nice as they are, there are many other ways in which traditional wreaths may be used. Yes, and it’s sometimes fun to experiment with rather un-traditional types of wreaths. Here are a few ideas for such new uses, and new creations: 1. Make tiny lapel sized wreaths by twisting a few ev ergreens around a circle of green pipe cleaner. Add a few little berries. Keep a tray full of these little corsages in the front hall and pin them on vis itors for a gay holiday touch. 2. When wreaths are to be hung in windows, make them double faced so that they will be attractive both inside the room, and as seen from outside the window. Other wreaths that are to be used on doors, walls, etc., are easier to work with when made flat on the back side. 3. Use minute wreath corsages as place card-favors on a holiday table. 4. Place large wreaths around the service plates for Christmas Dinner — or on a Holiday buf fet table. 5. Use Small wreaths as nap kin rings. 6. Float a wreath of green parsley on a bowl of rosy to mato soup or bouillon. 7. Use a wreath as an hors d’ouvrcs server. Cover a styro foam basic wreath with green ery and place it on a simple crystal platter. Stick tid bit laden cocktail picks into the sty rofoam. 8. Wreaths around mirrors are always lovely, but try adding to the effect by spraying on the mirror a MERRY CHRISTMAS greeting, using pressurized can ned “snow.” 9. Use a number of small wreaths as candle bases for a row of stately tapers, on a man tle or table. 10. Bake Christmas cakes and breads in wreath shapes, using ring molds, and recorate them to resemble wreaths, using green icing, bits of citron maraschino cherries, angelica, etc. Doughnut cutters make nice wreath cooky shapes, and fondant can be hand twisted and shaped into wreaths, then decorated with cut bits of gum drops. 11. For an attractive Christ mas table, surround a huge can dle, or a cluster of tapers, with a large, flat wreath. Nestle Christmas balls in the wreath to harmonize with the color tones in the tapers or candle. Spray a silvery snow mist over all. BEST WISHES GREEN MEADOW DAIRY, Inc. 1504 DEAN STREET ROME, GEORGIA At The Foot Of The Manger (Continued from Page 7B) lehem, but the freckled angel stopped him, saying that al though this lamb was the most beautiful and unusually white, it still could be whiter! So in stead of going toward Bethle hem they took it in the opposite direction, down the other side of the hill where the pool was— and there, in the clear water, they dumped it right in the middle of the stars! The little shepherd was not certain that this should have been done, but the freckled an gel said that it should. And so it was. There was some considerable rubbing, and fluffing, and brushing to do, and while it was being done the little shepherd pretended to grumble and tried to frown, but he took great care to see that his lamb did not catch cold, and handled it gent ly, and even did more work than the freckled angel. BACK TO BETHLEHEM After it had become quite dry, the little shepherd took it to his breast and bundled it up to keep it warm, but as he did so a tiny hoof kicked out, and sud denly there was a small rip in the garment of the little shep herd. Wtih order, once more, restored, the three at last were off to Bethlehem. From time to time the little shepherd glanced down to see that his favorite lamb was all right and reassure it along the way. “You’ll be better off there.” And “I know you’ll be happy — won’t you?” he told it. And the lamb seemed to think so, for it was very quiet and appeared sorry that it had torn his clothing that little rip. So the shepherd shifted it is his arms, that it would not face the sleeve with the rip but face the undamaged one. And then they both were quiet. When all arrived at Bethle hem, this time the little shep herd walked softly into the sta ble behind the freckled angel. The first thing he did was to look at the Child Who lay in the manger. And the second thing he did was to see the Holy Family, and the shining angels, and visiting Kings in their glit tering raiments with their gifts before them, and the small grey donkey gazing down over the crib. But the third thing that the little shepherd did was to peek over the shoulder of the freck led angel. And breathlessly he peeked again to make certain that he saw what he thought he saw. The place at the foot of the manger was empty. THE HEAVENLY CHORUS At the same time he became aware of the tiniest doubt on another matter. To be sure, the little shepherd had brought a gift, but it was only a lamb, even though it was the best of the flock. At first it struggled and wobbled a little, when he placed it on the manger floor, but now it stood quite peaceful and white. The little shepherd looked at it and thought the scrubbing it had been given was well worth while, for among the gifts of kings his favorite lamb was in plain sight at the foot of the manger. As to the little shepherd him self, he was content to stay as much in the shadows as possible, for although the place where the sharp, tiny hoof of the lamb had torn his garment was not very big, one is not usually caught with a rip in the presence of a king, and besides, his clothing was not too white, since he had been so busy looking after the lamb. He was happy to stay there and just look at the pic- 1NVEST IN REAL ESTATE nnm\ —-PEDry MANAGEMENT Open 7 Days • Visitors of Welcome PARAKEETS GUARANTEED TALKERS ANY TYPE PET WHISPERING PINES BIRD FARM POplar 1-2261 l‘/z Mile S. of Ford Plant HWY. 35 OFF 41 S. ture of all before him—which was now complete. He noticed that all the angels were waiting as if to ask when to sing, and then he saw the freckled angel nod. And much to his surprise, he knew then that the freckled angel had been ap pointed by the King of Heaven to see that the donkey was quiet, and the lamb was brushed white and that the other angels all sang correctly their Heaven ly chorus. And as the angels sang their glory to the Son of God the Highest, a little shepherd heard his name also — Well, they sang about the shepherds, and the least among them — and very likely that was he. THE KING OF LOVE And for once, the lamb gave him no trouble at all, and the heart of the little shepherd was warm with joy, and even the rip in his garment was gone and his clothing was white and per fectly as good as new. And the freckled angel was grinning at him through iwice as many freckles, and the little shepherd had the strange feeling that he himself no longer had any of his own. And so the little shepherd knew also that as miraculous as all this was, there was yet some thing greater, for as he had giv en his greatest possession, so he had received the greatest gift in return, and for all his days he would know the joy of fol lowing the King of Love. Okinawan Christmas (Continued from Page 6B) gently. “I smoke one whole cig arette in three days!” Christmas is giving — Okina wans are our current beneficia ries, and they’re very happy about it all. One neighborhood little boy knows just when we set up the Crib each year and every day he visits to say a prayer and always makes sure that we notice his fervor. Then later on in the day he stops by the Dispensary saymg, “Sister, you know me, don’t you, Sis ter?” Yes, Christmas is giving in a very special manner. We might say that our whole life and all of our work here in Okinawa is a constant Christmas. We give what we are and have though at most times what we have is lit tle. At this special season of the year, however, very many peo ple, recalling that God so loved the world as to give His Only Begotten Son, want to be a part of that giving. They know that as they lay their gifts (through our hands) at the feet of some needy Okinawans they are lay ing them also before the Manger Crib of the Christ Child as He Himself said: “As long as you did it for one of these, the least of My brethren, you did it for me.” Christmas Saint St. Anastasia enjoys the unique distinction of having a special commemoration at the second of the three Christmas Masses. By order of the Em peror Diocletian this wealthy Roman widow was banished from the Eeternal City about the year 287 and burnt alive at Sirmium, Yugoslavia, on De cember 25 (exact year not estab lished). Toward the end of the fifth century her name was in serted in the Canon of the Mass. A few decades later the celebra tion of the second Mass on Christmas in her honor was re quired of the clergy of Rome. St. Nicholas speaks Spanish.
