Pope John-

those of other faiths, separated
from the Church of Rome, can
not experience.
He continued: “It is a beauti
ful thing to form a single family,
a family with Mary the Mother
of Jesus as our mother... I
speak to you this way to tell
you what happiness there is in
my heart. Let us all keep Mary
the protectress in our hearts.”
When the time came for Pope
John to speak in English, he
prefaced his remarks by first
saying in Italian: “I will not
speak it very well, but I will
do better in the future. If any
one here is an expert in the
language, he should know that
I am taking my novitiate.”
The simplicity with which this
was said drew resounding
applause from the crowd.
At the end of the audience
the Pope gave his apostolic
blessing. Before imparting it he
said he would give the blessing
and invited those present to re
spond in chant.
The Pope first began to learn
English when he was Apostolic
Delegate in Bulgaria and his
teacher was Msgr. Thomas Ryan,
present head of the English
language section of the Vatican
Secretariat of State. He had to
interrupt his English lessons
when he was appointed Apos
tolic Nuncio to France in 1944.

America's New Cardinals Spent Question
Box
Days Before Their Elevation
Often Of U. S.
THE BULLETIN, December 27, T95a—PAGE 5
((Radio, N.C.W.C. News Service)
ROME—America’s new Card
inals were busy in the days pre
ceding the December 15 con
sistory preparing themselves
for the ceremonies and recep
tions which marked their eleva
tion to the rank of Princes of the
Church.
From the time they arrived in
Rome until they were presented
with the “biglietti” officially no
tifying them of their nomination
to the Sacred College of Card
inals, they lived simply and
frequently talked of the United
States.
After their elevation their
days were crowded with official
visits and ceremonial functions.
His Eminence John Cardinal
O’Hara, C.S.C., Archbishop of
Philadelphia, recalled meeting
His Holiness Pope John XXIII
when the latter was Apostolic
Nuncio to France.
He said he met him at a re
ception given by Ambassador
Jefferson Caffery, who served
as the U. S. diplomatic envoy to
Paris at the time. Speaking of
the Pontiff, Cardinal O’Hara
added:
“Even then I was impressed'
with the simple, humble manner
of the man, while at the same'
time his great learning and keen
mind were evident as proved by
the way he distinguished him
self in his diplomatic assign
ments.”
The prelate said he felt highly
honored at being created a
Cardinal because, “as far as I
know I am the first of my Con
gregation of Holy Cross to be
so honored.”
The Archbishop of Philadel
phia lived quietly at Holy Cross
headquarters and rarely went
out, but was in very good hu
mor and said he was anxious to
return home.
His Eminence Richard Card
inal Cushing, Archbishop of
Boston, lived at the North
American College of Rome and
was the most active of the
group.
He gave a press conference at

THE HEFFERNANS
the Grand Hotel here at the
request of newsmen. His slow,
deliberate speaking manner and
his obvious relaxed ease won
him many compliments among
journalists who met him for the
first time.
He told newsmen that his
cardinalitial honor came in rec
ognition of the people of Bos
ton and New England, includ
ing “the good people of other
faiths with whom I have work
ed within various civic func
tions and many of whom were
as enthusiastic if not more so”
than his priests and faithful.
The Archbishop of Boston
said there was great enthusiasm
in his See for the new Pope. He
declared that when the latter’s
election was first announced
many felt it would be difficult
to fill the place of the late Pius
XII, that anyone who succeeded
him would be somewhat in the
shadow of the former Pontiff.
“Yet the present Pope’s style,
his simplicity, great human qua
lity and kindness have already
won him affection,” Cardinal
Cushing said. “At the same time
people recognize him as an out
standing Pope in respect to his
ability and naturally great
things are expected of him.”
While in Rome the Archbish
op of Boston paid a call on Jes
uit General Father Jean Bap
tiste Janssens to thank him per
sonally for conferring on him
the title of “a founder of the
New England Province” in rec
ognition of the Cardinal’s sup
port and interest.
The prelate said Mass in the
crypt of St. Peter’s on the sec
ond day of his stay in Rome.
About 70 Bostonians who made
the trip with him attended the
Mass. He gave them a brief talk
after the service, warning them
like a father to be careful and
not catch cold in the changeable
Italian weather.
In addition to his unusual ac
tivities His Eminence Amleto
Giovanni Cardinal Cicognani,
former Apostolic Delegate to the
United States, was engaged in
making arrangements for liv
ing in Rome.
The Cardinal, who also stay
ed at the Holy Cross Fathers’
headquarters, said that “for the
time being I am somewhat like
a man without a country as I
have just left one assignment
and have yet to be reassigned.”
He will probably be assigned
to one of the congregations in
Rome, but no matter where he
goes he will have many remind
ers of his long service in Ameri
ca.
“I have brought back many
mementos from the United
States and attached to each
there is the happy memory of
some person or some circum
stance,” he declared. “At pres
ent I have them in my rooms at
the International College of the
Congregation of Holy Cross
where I am staying temporari
ly.”
Cardinal Cicognani declared
that he was naturally glad to
return to Italy as it is his home,
“but after so many years in the
United States with so many
friends among the clergy and
the laity I will have to readapt
myself.”
The prelate said that he, Card
inal Cushing and Cardinal O’
Hara are “one unit, we consid
er ourselves as three American
Cardinals, myself included. Two
of us will go home and I will,
with a touch of regret, remain.”
Cardinal Cicognani said that
he does not know when he will
take possession of his titular
church, San Clemente, but that
he is enthusiastic about being
assigned to it and knows its
history thoroughly.
(Continued from Page 4)
seventy, a maximum which was
maintained until the current
reign of Pope John XXIII. Inso
far as is conveniently possible,
cardinals are selected from all
the nations of Christendom (The
Council of Trent, Session
XXIV). *
The main duties of a cardinal
are to assist the Roman pontiff
in Church government; and
upon the Holy Father’s death, to
elect a successor. Chief among
a cardinal’s privileges are the
right to preach and hear con
fessions anywhere in the world,
precedence over all other pre
lates, including archbishops and
patriarchs, and the right to wear
and use certain insignia. The
formal title of address reserved
for cardinals is “Your Emi
nence.”
HISTORICALLY, the roots of
the cardinalate can be found in
apostolic times. In the words
of Pope Eugene IV:
“Although the . name of this
dignity was not expressed from
the beginning of the primitive
Church as it is now, still the
office itself you will find evi
dently to have been instituted
by St. Peter and his successors.”
THE DISTINCTION with re
gard to “cardinal priests,” “car
dinal deacons,” etc. is now pri
marily of symbolic rather than
practical significance. The ear
liest cardinals were always the
senior priests attached to the
25-28 quasi-parishes belonging
to the pope. Later, Pope Fabian
(d. 251) named to the cardinalate
certain deacons in the rural
areas outside Rome. (Sometime
during the following decade
Pope Dionysius also appointed
cardinals among the priests out
side Rome.) Finally, because of
the ever-increasing administrat
ive and ceremonial burdens of
the papacy, Pope Gregory III
(d. 741) named the bishops of
the seven suburban Roman sees
as cardinals. Today “cardinal
deacon,” for example, does not
mean that a cardinal is a dea
con, but that he now has the
title originally given to a dea
con of the primitive Church.

Pope’s Election
Big Setback
To Communists
PHOENIX, Ariz., (NC) — It
aly’s Reds “received a great set
back in the election of Pope
John,” Mrs. Clare Boothe Luce
asserted here in an interview.
The former U. S. Ambassador
to Italy was interviewed by Fa
ther John P. Doran, for years a
columnist for the Arizona Reg
ister, newspaper of the Tucson
diocese.
Mrs. Luce told Father Doran
that the efforts of communism
in Italy would be easier if the
Pope were not an Italian, for at
present the pride of all Italians
and their sense of meaningful
ness in the world” is in the
Pope’s being an Italian.
“The communists of Italy re
ceived a great setback in the
election of Pope John,” she said.
“Here he was a man of simple,
peasant background, of a large
family of poor people who still
worked the land near their na
tive village. He had risen in the
Church, but they had not profit
ed by his rise. No other thought
could be credited than ‘here is
a holy and so honest man!”
Mrs. Luce, who was an official
representative of the U. S. Gov
ernment at the coronation of
Pope John, said the Vatican ap
peared very pleased that Pres
ident Eisenhower had sent a
full delegation, which included
Secretary of State Dulles.
When Father Doran asked
about her impression of the late
Pope Pius XII, Mrs. Luce said
he could be referred to as the
“Saint of Public Relations.”
“No one to my knowledge,”
she stated, “has done more to
make the non-Cathclic world
understand the Church and find
it appealing than Pius XII.”
Most people have sense

iness, but very few are willing
to let it go at that.
