BERNADETTE, by Marcelie
Auclair (Desclee Co., Inc., $3.50).
(Reviewed by Cecelia L. Hines)
In a recent Catholic magazine
there is a review of Bernadette
by Marcel Auclair which is
most revealing. The reviewer,
after stating that he has read
“just about everything” written
about Bernadette in the last fif
ty years and that he is about to
write a book about her himself,
goes on to “damn with faint
praise” and in minute detail the
book published under the offi
cial patronage of the very dis
tinguished Comiie Infernational
du Centenaire as the official
centenary book on Lourdes.
However, the capsule at the
end of the review calls Berna-
deiie a “delightful life for the
general reader.” Quite an acco
lade — for who needs to know
about this simple, courageous
girl more than the general read
er? From the heavenly blue
jacket, decorated with a simple
and lowly-bundle of faggots, to
the so-natural photographs, in-
terspersed-all through the pa^es
of almost photographic pen pic
tures of the little saint, Berna
dette lives and speaks to the
reader of what she has seen and
been told. This is made possible
by great tenderness of heart
added to the author’s facile style
and knowledge of her subject.
Marcelie Auclair, best known
in America (she is well known
in France and other countries as
a writer in the secular field) for
her biography of St. Teresa of
Avila which has been cited by
critics as the best available, has
shown Bernadette through her
own spoken words and the little
notebooks that she kept. This
child was not dull nor stupid;
she had a native'wit, even if she
was unlettered, and the capabil
ity of using it in a practical way.
She also possessed a natural
gaiety which bubbled up when
pain did not engulf her. Au-
clair’s readers are never bored
or lost in the maze of reported
action. Paul Gallico uses the
same approach in his delightful
life of St. Patrick, The Steadfast
Man, and it does much to de
velop clarity of perception by
cutting the red tape of pious
legends surrounding the saints.
This book shows a young pea
sant girl, true, simple and cou
rageous — even with God. Such
was Bernadette who saw glory,
told about it, and reflected it.
The author, enveloped in the
great white mantle of her spirit
ual mother Teresa, has been
able to evoke the echo of the
“measureless murmur of the
prayers, petitions, and thanks
givings” arising to the Immacu
late Heart of Mary, to the Fa
ther, Son, and Holy Ghost at
the grotto of Lourdes — where
prayer meets love.

NELSON MOORE REALTY CO.
407 W. PONCE DE LEON
DECATUR
(Bruce, $3.95).
(Reviewed by Margot Atwood)
Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin have
examined Christian marriage
from many angles, illumining
every corner with the light of
love. They treat of various sub
jects influencing marriage, e.g.:
selection of partner, preparation
for marriage, the husband’s
place, obedience of the wife,
physical aspects of married love,
pregnancy, “momism,” in-laws,
working wives, children, child
less marriages, parenthood, etc.
The style of this book makes
it appear to be light reading.
Without being preachy, it offers
the key to truly happy mar
riage. Thoroughly Catholic in
thought, it is written in a man
ner which will be welcomed by
any Christian couple who hope
to obtain the highest degree of
happiness intended by God in
their marriage.

which you will want to keep
and treasure. For all ages.
FROM KARL MARX TO
JESUS CHRIST, by Ignance
Lepp, (Sheed & Ward, $3.75).
(Reviewed by Elizabeth Hester)
Written originally in French,
this book has been translated
into six languages besides Eng
lish. This is highly understand
able since Father Lepp’s style
has all the brisk sprightliness
necessary to give him wide pop
ular appeal. In this instance he
may be particularly recom
mended to men rather than wo
men; this is because his un
veiling of Stalinist Communism
is markedly more like an analy
sis of a football strategic than
like a plot summation of Robert
Taylor’s latest movie.
From Karl Marx lo Jesus
Christ is a satisfyingly orderly
book, and a really exceptionally
complete one. The reader is
made to know with perfect ex
plicitness why Father Lepp be
came a Communist, what it was
to be one, why he gave it up,
and, finally, why he became not
only a Catholic, but a priest. In
deed, if this book has a fault it
is that at the end there is not a
single loose end dangling to dis
turb one. Father Lepp has done
all the work, a tactic that may
leave some readers a little stu
pefied by their own inaction.

MOTION PICTURE ASS’N
MEMBERS PLAN INSIGNIA
NEW YORK, (NC) — An in
signia and statement certifying
approval by Hollywood’s adver
tising code office will be affix
ed in the future to film adver
tising sent out by member com
panies of the Motion Picture As
sociation of America.
This step was agreed upon Ijy
a meeting here of advertising-
directors of movie companies
which was held in response to
complaints about bad taste in
some motion picture ads carried
in newspapers.
Gordon White, administrator
of the advertising code, said the
indications of code approval will
be attached to the “press books”
sent to theatre managers by the
big film companies. A “press
book” from the distributor us
ually accompanies each film and
consists of promotional material.
Phraseology of the statement
and design of the insignia has
not yet been decided upon, nor
has the date of initial use been
determined, but all are expect
ed to be disclosed soon accord
ing to the office of Taylor Mills,
public relations director for the
Motion Picture . Association
which sponsors the code.
The plan for putting the insig
nia and statement on the press
books was decided upon after
rejection of an earlier proposal
that film ads carried in news
papers bear an insignia.
According to association offi
cials, it was thought that the
first suggestion overlooked the
possibility that press book ma
terial might be altered before
being presented to newspapers
but the seal of approval employ
ed nevertheless.
Mr. White, the code admini
strator, said that his office plans
to follow up each complaint
from newspaper publishers
about offending advertisements
with individual attention and, in
some cases, personal follow-ups.
In early October, when it was
reported the motion picture as
sociation contemplated steps to
counter complaints, Mr. Mills,
the public relations director,
told the N.C.W.C. News Serv
ice that 80 per cent of the ad
vertising questioned for its bad
taste has been for films that do
not come under the advertis
ing code’s administration.
He asserted that the majori
ty of the questionable ads are
for foreign films or for movies
distributed by independent ag
encies which do not seek ap
proval from either the advertis
ing code office or its counter
part which rates the film itself.
Members of the motion pic
ture association are: Paramount
Pictures, Allied Artists, Colum
bia Pictures. 20th Century Fox
Pictures, United Artists, Lowes,
Inc., Universal Pictures, Warner
Brothers and Republic Pictures.
