GA. peace of Christ. . .which, where- ever and as long as it is missing, leaves the world in agony, and wherever it is present, as the Angels of Bethlehem announced, fills the spirit and the heart with exultation.” The Pope referred to the ringing of Christmas bells as a call to this peace and unity. But he noted that in many parts of the world there would be ears deaf to their call. There, he said, “it is a very sad duty to recog nize the ‘evil intent,’ the proofs of which are now common knowledge.” He said that he had no desire to make a discourteous judg ment, and that he wished to be kind in excusing, where possible, and weighing the gravity of the materialism and atheism which oppresses several nations. But, he said, “one cannot deny the slavery of individuals and masses, the slavery of thought and the slavery of labor.” Pope John cited the Old Testa ment story of the Tower of Babel and how it ended in con fusion. He declared that there are other towers of Babel being constructed in the world and their end will be the same. Then by way of counsel to Christians, he said “there is nothing martial or violent in the attitudes of men of faith. It is necessary, however, to be watch ful in the night that gathers: to take account of the deciets and to number, first, the enemies of God and then to number our selves and to take part in every defense of Christian principles, which are now and always the breastplate of true justice.” The Pope indicated that those who will stand and be numbered among the opponents of evil will be known by those things which distinguish the true Chris tian spirit, by good works and warm charity, the exercise of which “gives substance and meaning to civilization, which takes its norm from Christ.” Pope John ended with the wish that “as many as hear this voice over the airwaves, rising above the harmony of the bells to invite all to union and to prayer... may wish to reinforce their good intentions for the sanctification of the New Year, so that it may become for all the world a year of justice, of blessings, of goodness and of peace.” In this discourse the Pope made reference to a program which was transmitted by the Italian radio and television net work on Christmas Eve. The program, entitled “Christ mas letter to the Holy Father,” was based on the letter of a child who had expressed the wish that the Pope might hear the bells of his home village, Softo il Monte, ring on Christ mas Eve. The program granted the child’s wish and added the sound of the village church bells of Sotto II Monte to those of Rome, Athens, Istanbul, Paris and Venice — all places where the Pope had passed years in his priestly and diplomatic career. FAR EAST'S BISHOPS PROMISE FIGHT AGAINST SOCIAL INEQUITY; VOICE SYMPATHY FOR FREEDOM MOVES (N.C.W.C. News Service) MANILA — The Catholic Bishops of the Far East have publicly promised to do all they can to help remedy “blatant so cial inequalities” which exist in such fields as land distribution, wages and working conditions. In a separate statement the more than 100 archbishops, bish ops and vicars and prefects apos tolic who took part in the week- long episcopal conference here also expressed their “heartfelt sympathy with every legitimate effort made to maintain and to strengthen the independence and freedom of the Asian na tions, and to protect and uphold the dignity of the human per son and cf his inalienable God- given rights.” The Bishops’ statement is a companion one to their denun ciation of communist persecu tion. In that statement, they said that the Red goal is “ex tinction of the religious spirit of the people under their rule.” The conference, which follow ed the consecration of Manila’s rebuilt Cathedral of the Immac ulate Conception, was presided over by His Eminence Gregoire Pierre XV Cardinal Agagianian, Armenian Rite Patriarch of Cil icia and Pro-Prefect of the Sac red Congregation for the Propa gation of the Faith. It brought together members of the hier archies of the Philippines, For mosa, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Macao, Fiji, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaya. Observers from the countries of Southeast Asia and Oceania also took part. The second statement was couched in the third person, as was the first. Concerning social conditions, the Bishops said of themselves: “They deem it necessary to voice their concern at the blat ant social inequalities still exist ing in so many of the countries of East and Southeast Asia, at the low standard of living of a great portion of the population, at the social inadequacy of the distribution of land, and at the poor conditions of employment and retribution under which so many workers are constrained to live. “Following the inspired social encyclicals of the recent popes, they promise to do all in their power to help and assist towards the amelioration of the condi tions of life of the people.” Expressing their “pastoral af fection and dedication” to the peoples of the various countries in which they work, the Bish ops said they wanted “to renew the assurance that their mission is primarily and essentially a spiritual one, that, namely, of spreading the good tidings of peace which Christ entrusted to His Church as a message of sal vation and of life for all man kind.” The statement then said that it is the Bishops’ desire “to con tribute, to the best of their abil ity, to the educational and social progress of these countries, and to the maintenance of those es tablished and salutary traditions which constitute the fabric of family and community life for hundreds of millions of people.” Concerning education in par ticular, the Bishops said: “The cause of Catholic educa tion they regard as one of the pillars of their apostolate; they are therefore resolved to ex tend it to as many children as possible, and to improve both the educational standards and the material equipment of their schools. It will likewise be their special endeavor to insure that the curriculum will be more and more adapted to the special con ditions and needs of the coun tries of Asia and of their pro gressive national development. The episcopate expressed gratitude to the priests of the various countries, both native and foreign, and to the Brothers, Sisters and lay apostles. Hope was expressed that the number of apostolic lay men and wo men will grow steadily, and that “they may contribute ever more effectively towards the solution of the various problems of their respective countries.” Of native priests, the Bishop said: “It is their firm resolve to form a clergy who will be sec ond to none in their loyalty and obedience to the Church, to the Roman Pontiff and to their re spective Ordinaries; who will be strong in the love of their coun try and of their fellow citizens, and earnest in the practice of those virtues of which they should be shining examples to their people.” “Deeply conscious of the im portance of modern media of format! entertainment, they feel the need of striving by common ef fort to ensure that these media be not used for the transmission of programs which may contra dict or subvert the principles of the natural law. They are fur ther convinced of the necessity of making use of these media so as to bring the message of Christ and His Church to an ever- widening public.” Services For Cyril E.
