News Service) CHICAGO — The “real chal lenge” in winning the mind and heart of Asia and Africa “is in the domain of the spirit,” Dr. Charles Malik, president of the General Assembly of the United Nations, asserted here. Dr. Malik told some 1,200 per sons attending the John A. Ryan Forum, sponsored by the Catho lic Council on Working Life, that material aid to Asia and Africa is important but it is not the real issue. The forum here is named for the late Msgr. John . . . Dr. Malik said that funda mentally Asia and Africa want four things: political independ ence, econmic development, free opportunity to . develop their own way, and nonentanglement in the cold war. But in achieving these things, Dr. Malik stated, the people of Asia and Africa want above all “to be loved and understood, to be respected and treated as equals.” “To confine America’s mean ing to Asia and Africa only to the military, the political and the economic,” he continued, “is not only to fail to perceive the real issues of Asia and Africa, but to do grevious injustice to the wonderful spiritual riches with which this country is bless ed.” Dr. Malik said that he attach es “the greatest importance therefore to intellectual and spi ritual contacts with the rising East.” “In their sudden awakening all these cultures are earnestly seeking the virtues of the mind and spirit,” he stated. “This is their greatest issue.” “It is easy to give money and it is easy to grant, independ ence,” Dr. Malik asserted, “but the competition for the soul and mind of Asia and Africa is in finitely more crucial and more demanding than any other com petition, and he who for any reason abdicates before this challenge does not know that he is failing not only Asia and Af rica- but his own (American) culture with its infinite spiritu al riches.” Urging “serious attention” to the human, intellectual and spi ritual needs of the two conti nents, Dr. Malik said he was “pleading” for books and maga zines, a deeper use of radio and television, extended programs of cultural exchange, help in the development of educational systems and for Churches and private organizations to contin ue and expand their good work. “The prize is tremendous,” Dr. Malik stated. “It is nothing short of survival itself. And so the greatest issue is whether the West can rise to the challenge— unless it does there will be no West.” “And the challenge can be met,” he concluded, “by bold ness and not by fear, by advance and not by retreat, and by an exact and deep analysis of the issues at stake.” HAND IN HAND A man has to have the ability to reason in order to know when he is being unreasonable. (NC Photos) L’OSSERVATORE EDITORIAL RECALLS MARRIAGE TEACHING IN CASE OF PRINCESS MARIA VATICAN CITY, (NC) — A font-page editorial in the Vati can City daily, L’Osservatore Romano, has recalled the Church’s teachings on mixed marriages and made clear ref erence to the rumored romance of Italian Princess Maria Gabri eli of the House of Savoy. “The Church is always con cerned to hold before the faith ful the danger of losing the pre cious gift of Faith,” the edi torial said. Two impediments to a mixed marriage, the paper said, are those of disparity of cult and of mixed religions. Princess Maria Gabriella, who lives in Switzerland, has denied that she has any plans for mar riage to the Shah of Iran. L’Os- servatore’s editorial, however, apparently was prompted by re ports that the Holy See might take some action in the case. The editorial noted that the Church holds marriage between a Catholic and an unbaptized person, such as a pagan or a Moslem, is considered illicit and invalid unless the impediment of disparity of cult is dispensed by the Church. The editorial notes that Can ons 1061 and 1064 specify the conditions under which such a marriage can be approved. Among those conditions is the provision that any offspring must be educated in the Catho lic religion. The Vatican City daily states: “It is evident, however, that one does not have a moral certainty (that these conditions will be observed) and in fact one is certain of the opposite when, for example, as in the case of Iran, the country’s constitution requires that its sovereign be of the Moslem religion, which would imply that at least one of the sons—he who is destined to the throne—be educated in the Moslem religion.” The article concludes with the affirmation that the Church’s marriage doctrine is followed by ecclesiastical authority without change. “When some persons hold that one Pope would follow a less rigid path and that another Pontiff would hold to a more severe one, these persons speak LIBERAL DHflBEHDS ON SAVINGS Savings received by the of a thing that is false historic ally and doctrinally absurd,” it said. Cites Differing Concepts Of Church Unity VATICAN CITY (NC) — In speaking of the coming ecumen ical council announced by His Holiness Pope John XXIII, it must be remembered that there are two differing concepts of church unity, according to a Vatican Radio commentator. “For the Roman Church,” he explained, “there is only one road which can lead to unity.” This road is that “which can lead all souls who claim to be long to Jesus Christ, professing the same faith and recognizing the same authority. “Leaving aside theological ar guments, it is obvious that the only expression of coherent, global and mass-accepted faith as well as the only universally recognized authority in ques tions of Christianity at the pres ent time are to be found in the Catholic Church.” The commentator said that the unity to which the separated churches “aspire is in varying degrees more the search for a greater common denominator. “For them it is a question of finding, on the basis of a thor ough examination, a minimum common attitude through which each one would be free, while respecting the faith, the good faith, of others . . .” The Vatican Radio speaker said “it is obvious that this kind of unity would not constitute a thorough unity. It would mean the achievement of a unanimity, a provisional unani mity which would be constantly disputed. Despite “this fundamental an tagonism,” the commentator said Christians must not despair of achieving unity. “Who would have thought three centuries ago that dis cussions between Catholics and Protestants would one day be possible? . . . Time has worked in this respect and we may rest assured that it is still work ing. Time is the instrument of God. It is one of those divine seeds, in which life is conceal ed and which will come to light on condition that it is planted in souls of good will.” Reds Claim U. S. Responsible For Church Council It stated in part: “The Sov ereign Pontiff . , . noted with paternal interest that the Sac red Heart Program, which had its humble beginning in 1939 from a station in St. Louis Uni versity, is now brought to a vast audience by more than 2,400 weekly broadcasts and by 90 television outlets. His Holi ness renders thanks to Almighty God for the graces bestowed through this form of apostolate, and He cherishes the prayerful hope that the program may con tinue to be a medium of bring ing an ever-increasing number of souls closer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.” At a commemoration dinner during which the papal letter was read, Father Murphy said that the Sacred Heart program on radio has 815 individual out lets, and that five continents hear the program, which is broadcast in three languages: English, Spanish and French. Father Murphy added that in its fifth year on television the Sacred Heart Hour is carried by 116 television outlets. Current plans for the pro gram, said Father Murphy, in clude stereophonic recording of all music for the programs, and a Portuguese version of the Sac red Heart Hour on radio. GOING TO THE PICKRICK? S. was denied here by L’Os servatore della Domenica. The Vatican . City weekly re ferred to the claim which apear- ed in a communist paper pub lished here, and stated that the erroneous charge grew out of the Reds’ “scientific conviction” that religion is only a political instrument of ruling groups. The weekly noted that this “conviction” fails to take into consideration the Church’s “in terior strength” and concluded: “The ecumenical council is in spired by the deep sense of the mission of the Church, by the wish to put it into practice and by faithfulness to the mandate established by the Spouse of Christ for 20 centuries. This is the reality, whether or not the communists believe it.” HIED WALTERS 0LDSM0BILE Sales... 0 L 0 S M 0 B I L E Service OLDSMOBILE—Number 1 in the Medium-Priced Field SIMCA—The Smart French Car and Economy King BUCKHEAD-TRADED USED CARS YOU CAN TRUST GROWING THRU COURTESY AND QUALITY SERVICE 3232 PEACHTREE RD., N.
