THE ITALIAN PEOPLE AND ST.
Rev. Bobert Teoli
The Italian people have nany
patron saints. There are St. An
thony of Padua, St. Rocco and
St. Lucy, to name only a few.
Of course, it goes without say
ing that the Blessed Vrgin
Mary holds first place in Italian
devotion to the Saints. But
heading the list of pstron
Saints after the Mother of God
is St. Joseph, the foster-fsther
of Jesus.
St. Joseph was born in Pale-
Judy will present the show.
Mrs. Doyle also announced
that on Tuesday, April 21st, the
annual silver tea will be pre
sented at the Blessed Sacrament
Convent and that Mrs. Thomas
J. Mahoney will be chairman of
this affair.
Very Reverend Thomas A.
Brennan advised the parents
that the pupils will begin their
Easter holidays at noon Wed
nesday, March 25th.
The monthly attendance prize
was won by Mrs. Betty Ceto-
vich’s sixth grade.
Christ Is The Bridge
(Continued from Page 1)
Church’s hymn to the Easter candle is a solemn commemoration
of nothing new.
GOD'S OWN MANHOOD
God’s nature is reflected in our own, it is true, but the distance
that separates Him from us is an infinity. What change does the
Paschal mystery make in that?
We who are Catholics believe that the Word took on human
flesh not for the sake of the Word, for God is already perfect,
but for the sanctifying of that flesh. Christ is not God walking
around in a body, suppressing all human traits and needs.
By faith the Catholic says: “In the Incarnation, the Word takes
possession of a human nature and soaks it through with heavenly
holiness. It elevates all its actions, sanctifies its every movement.
There has been unique manhood in the world thoroughly given
over to God because it was God’s own manhood.”
This, then, is 'the chief effect of the Incarnation: humanity of
the very kind that is ours constituting the link, the bridge on which
we walk towards God. We can be espoused to God because there
is a bridal chamber now, both of heaven and of earth.
In the third of the four Scripture readings of the baptismal
service in the Easter Vigil, we read from the pen of Isaia that
that Bud of the Lord shall be “ornament and splendor,” that on
Mount Sion v/here the Lord is called upon, “His glory will be a
veil and a protection over all.”
What does that mean? Simply this: that ancient Israel, by any
reckoning God’s closest friend, had nonetheless to view His holiness
as something outside itself. He showed tlqie people signs of favor
but always from without: a cloud of smoke, a flame of fire. He
was lover, protector, and guide to them. He was never precisely
one of them. They longed for a strong “shoot” of the Lord, who
would grow up in their midst and somehow bring them closer to
their God.
Jesus Christ, the principle of human holiness, is a man among
men. In Him we are sanctified no less by God, but through the
medium, of our own flesh. Our nature is made capable of holiness
because the Spirit has rendered one such human nature all-holy.
Christ is the bridge.
That is why we bless things at this season and reconcile them
to God: fire, water, oil and wax for sacred use; foodstuffs and our
homes for everyday. That, too is why we make public profession
of oyr baptismal faith at the Vigil. In Christ risen, all men and
creatures are made one with God. “Heaven is wedded to earth, and
God to man.”
THE BATTLE WON
Death is on its deathbed and hell’s power is broken, for Christ
is the “firstborn from the dead.” The battle has been won. The
victory is His—and ours. Death is still at work in the world, to
be sure, and so is sin, its cause. They are to be feared, but much
more they are to be mocked and derided. About their hold, there
is nothing final.
The Holy Spirit is already at work in the world, and already
man has begun to partake in the Resurrection. He takes the
Paschal Eucharist, the food of immortality. It is the very body
of Christ who has taken the sting from the serpent’s tooth and
sent death sprawling like the dazed sentries in the garden.
“In this festival of Easter joys, we beseech thee, therefore
Lord, for ourselves thy servants, for all the clergy and thy most
devoted people, for our Holy Father, Pope John, and for our
Bishop, grant peace to our days; guide, govern and protect us by
thy constant care.”

stine and one might wonder
why a country which has pro
duced such emminently holy
men and women as Francis of
Assisi, Dominic, Catherine of
Sienna, Don Bosco, Frances
Cabrini and hundreds of like
heroic sanctity should pay such
great homage to a carpenter of
Nazareth.
Perhaps the explanation lies
in the fact that the life of St.
Joseph is so well reflected in the
traditional Italian way of life.
Joseph was first and foremost,
the foster-father of Jesus, the
St. Joseph
Feast Day
Is Marked
March 19th was the Feast Day
of St. Joseph. On Sunday, March
15th, the members of the Sav
annah Italian Club paid special
homage to their patrons by at
tending a Family Communion
at the 8 o’clock Mass at the Ca
thedral in Savannah. The Mass
was offered by Father Robert
J. Tioli, the Club chaplain, in-
the presence of His Excellency,
Bishop Thomas J. McDonough.
In the evening the Club tend
ered a banquet in honor of St.
Joseph at the Brahma Room on
Victory Drive. Father Capitani,
Catholic Chaplain at Fort
Stewart, Georgia was guest

husband of Mary, the father of
the Holy Family. And there is
among the Italian people a great
reverence and respect for family
life. The Italian father is very
conscious that his position as
head of the family is a God-giv
en Vocation in the truest sense
of that term. He, like every tru
ly Christian father is humbly
aware that his wife and the
mother of his children is the
heart of the family. They find
in St. Joseph an emminent ex
ample and model.
The Italian finds in St. Jos
eph a kinship of interest. The
foster-Father of Jesus was a
carpenter. The men of Italy
have ever been known not only
as great artists, but also like
Joseph, as artisians.
It was to St. Joseph that God
gave the vocation of spouse of
Mary and guardian of Jesus.
St. Joseph was the least in or
der of dignity among the three
members of that Holy Family
of Nazareth. And certainly Jos
eph, “a just man” was very
conscious of this fact.
The Holy Family, of which
St. Joseph was the head was a
poor family. As the wife and
child of a village carpenter,
Mary and Jesus certainly never
enjoyed luxury, but the honesty
of Joseph's labor protected them
from penury and provided them
with the necessities of life. For
Joseph, “a just man” was fav
ored by God with the direct
revelation that he had been
chosen to care for the Son of
OFFICERS ST. MARY'S HOME GUILD
SAINT MARY’S HOME GUILD
NAMES OFFICERS FOR YEAR
SAVANNAH — On Sunday,
March 8th, the Saint Mary’s
Home Guild held its semi-an
nual meeting and elected the of
ficers for the coming year. Mrs.
Arthur Fleming will serve as
president, Mrs. A. B. . Purdy,
vice-president, Miss Regina Lyt-
gen, secretary, and Mrs. Walter
Crawford as treasurer.
Bishop Thomas J. McDonough
was high in praise of the Guild’s
first successful year of opera
tion, and paid tribute to Mr.
John Gleason for his many years
of untiring effort on behalf of
the children at St. Mary’s. Sis
ter Mary Michael, R.S.M., ex
pressed the gratitude of the staff
and girls of the Home for the
contribution of the Guild.
A group of girls from the
Home—The Irish Dancers—gave
an entertaining performance of
the Irish Jig and the Highland
Fling. All the girls then ren
dered a salute in song to the new
American Flag and the 49th
state.
St. Mary’s Orphanage Home
was organized in Savannah by
the Sisters of Mercy in 1875
and was located at White Bluff.
Henry Blun donated a site on
Habersham St. and in 1883 the
home was moved to that site.
In 1938 St. Mary’s was transfer
red to its present location in the
spacious building on Victory
Drive, east, which was erected
by Archbishop Gerald P. O’
Hara.
The home presently houses 45
girls under the supervision of
Sister Mary Michael, Superior.
The meeting closed with Ben
ediction of the Most Blessed
Sacrament, celebrated by Bish
op McDonough.

God, and was certainly aware
that though his station was low
ly and his means limited, his po
sition as head of the family was
tremendously important in the
eyes of God.
With this information in
mind, it is not difficult to see
why the Church calls St. Joseph
the model for fathers, nor why
Italians, with their high regard
for family ties and responsibili
ties had adopted St. Joseph as
their chief patron after The
Blessed Virgin Mary.
