MACON LAY CATECHISTS, pictured left to right, are: Nancy Monroe, iJlary Michael Con
nolly, Denaie Chivers, Louise Haley, Renee Ayash, Peggy Simmons, and Patsy Glidewell. The
Sisters standing in back row are Sister Mary Dorothea, R.S.M., Instructor, and Sister Mary Ve
ronica, Superior, of ML de Sales Academy.—(Drinnon Photo).
First Macon Lay Catechists
Receive C. C. D. Certificates
MACON — The first lay cate
chists in training at Mount de
Sales Academy, Macon, re
ceived their certificates as Con
fraternity of Christian Doctrine
instructors on Sunday, March
8, at the conclusion of a Chris
tian Doctrine demonstration
class at Mt. de Sales auditorium.
The training program in
Christian Doctrine is an out
growth of the C.C.D. course
taught by the Mission Helpers
of the Sacred Heart during the
Summer of 1956 and sponsored
by His Excellency, the Most
Rev. Thomas McDonough. The
girls taking this instruction un
der the supervision of Sr. Mary
Dorothea, R.S.M., are Renee
Ayash, Atlanta; Delanie Chiv
ers, Sylvania; Mary Michael
Connolly, Columbus; Patricia
Glidewell, Jackson; Louise Ha
ley, Jacksonville, Florida; Nan
cy Monroe, Atlanta and Peggy
Ann Simons, Columbus.
The girls have been doing
their practice teaching using the
modern “kergymatic approach”
in Confraternity classes at St.
Joseph School, Macon. The sew
enty-two children enrolled are
grouped according to grade lev
els, reflecting the ideal set for
such groups in the course in
catechetics sponsored by Bishop
McDonough. Without a number
of lay catechists this would be
impossible. Several of the stu
dent teachers already have
plans for doing lay catechetical
work this summer.
The essence of the kergymatic
method of teaching might be
summed up in its stress on the
role of the Christian as the
bearer of the good news of
Christ, (kergyma). In response
to the great need to relate teach
ing of religion more closely to
every day living and to incorpo
rate the use of audio-visual ma
terial, the program seeks for the
child a progressive initiation
into the mystery of Christ
through Bible history, the Lit
urgy and the catechism.
Christianity is not merely a
creed, but a conviction to be
lived by flesh and blood men.
The aim then of any realistic
teaching of religion must be
not only to win men, for God,
but to cause them to live a
Christian life dedicated to God.
The lay catechist is being train
ed to proclaim His message to
the people of our own time that
they may find it truly is “spi
rit and life.” To continue the
work in Macon a new group
began training on March 11.
