News Service) LONDON — The most in tensive drive for the conversion of England and Wales since the restoration of the hierarchy a century ago has been launched here. Some four million practicing Catholics are taking part in a month’s campaign to win the other nine-tenths of the na tion to the Faith by nrayer and by active crusading. The cam paign will end on May 4, feast of the English Martyrs. Organized by the Catholic Missionary Society, a group of secular priests working fulltime on conversions, the campaign has the approval of the hierar chy, the cooperation of other Catholic societies, and the back ing of the faithful.. Although based largely on the “Crusade for Souls” movement in the U. S., an active door-to-door apostolate, the campaign is es sentially intended to be a period of prayer. Several months of work and much money have gone into the drive. Lay visitors have been trained for parish canvas sing; clerical conferences have been held and leaflets have been circulated explaining the active side of the crusade. Father Francis J. Ripley, Su perior of the Catholic Mission ary Society, told one conference of over 160 priests at Up Hol land College, Liverpool arch diocesan seminary: “We have no right to employ obsolete, in efficient, hit-or-miss methods of apostolate when modern effi cient proved techniques are available. “In England and Wales today there are about 40 million churchless people. The mission of the Church is for them be cause Christ has sent us to them, ordered us to preach the Gospel to them. The saving of souls should not be a pastime but the serious concern of every mem ber of the Church.” First of all, Father Ripley is urging all Catholics to offer Communions, daily Masses, dai ly Rosaries and other prayers for the month’s intention: con versions, the return of the laps ed Catholics, and for persever- ence in the Faith. “People will not pray unless they are con vinced that they should,” he told the clergy at Up Holland. “They will not be convinced unless and until we priests con tinually instruct them.” Secondly, he wants all Catho lics to be apostolic, because “un less they are apostolic there is no hope for England’s convers ion.” He explained that mass- approach methods, such as ad vertising in the press, are do ing a most valuable work es pecially in forming and condi-. tioning public opinion, keeping the Church before men’s eyes, and letting them see that the Church is really interested in them. But, ultimately, Father Ripley said, most conversions come from personal contact. This must be neither argument ative, apologetic nor controvers ial, but a sincere, straightfor ward exposition of the Faith, he added. Leaders in this side of the month’s work will be the door step visitors in every parish. They have been urged to show kindness all the time. Father Ripley said they must persuade practicing Catholics to “j o i n something Catholic,” the indif ferent or lapsed to return to their duties, and the non-Cath- olic to read literature about the Church or to enroll in the Cath olic Inquiry Bureau’s mail in structions course. Father Ripley said that the way Britain is becoming church less, materialistic and pleasure- loving is “frightening,” and much could be done to check this if the serious leakage among Catholics could be check ed. He believes there are several million lapsed adult Catholics in England. The main way to check this, is to impress upon Catholics, particularly the young, that just ping to church is not enough; that thev must join parochial organizations. Many lapsed Catholics would return if prac ticing Catholics took an inter est in them, he said. He has found that the most successful way of converting non-Cath- TRAVEL WITH YOUR FRIENDS VISIT EUROPE-1959 Sept. 5th-27th with the "Peach State Tour of Europe" Sponsored by Georgia Motor Club and B. O. A, C. olics is through the. Catholic- Inquiry Bureau, which adver tises instructions by mail in the daily and Sunday newspapers, and through parochial inquiry classes. At his Up Holland conference he referred to the “Crusade for Souls” in the state of Wisconsin where, he said, 200,000 lapsed Catholics had been put in con tact with the clergy. He wants lay visitors, organized by local pastors, to call on every home in every diocese, to keep in touch with practicing Catholics, to en courage the lapsed and to offer guidance to non-Catholics. May 10 has been set aside as a special day of prayer for the conversion of England. Quality Recapping New Tire Sales & Service BROWN TIRE CO. f'' ' ,^-***4* 'V* If You Can’t ■’ .’A Re-Tire —.
