The Vatican City weekly, L’Osservatore della Domenica, noted that this will be the first council of the Church to have audiovisual aids at its disposal and said they will be used. “Movies, radio and television, particularly the latter,” the weekly said, “will allow 500 million Catholics all over the world to be ‘present’ in Rome. It will also allow everyone to see principal phases of the 21st assembly that the Universal Church is promoting for the union of men under her great wings.” If television is to be used, only the public sessions of the council will be telecast. The daily deliberations of the bish ops will not be open to the pub lic and—if precedent is honored —will be kept secret by those participating. Use of public address systems, paging systems and other mod ern developments in communi cations will solve many of the problems of the last council, which was held at the Vatican and had its last session in 1870. A main drawback of meetings in St. Peter’s at that time was the fact that many bishops could not hear speakers in the basi lica’s specially built council hall. The whole range of new com munications improvements — typewriters, telephones, mimeo graph machines, microphones and others—-will do much to shorten the length of the coun cil. With the additional use of TV, newsreels and radio, the world as never before will be able to follow the major events of the council and see the Church at work. JOSEPH J. DEMBOWSKI D. E.
