Belmont Abbey College Library Now Housed In New Building THE BULLETIN, June 27, 1959—PAGE 5 Founded In 1876 (Continued from Page 3) ensuing, much has been accom plished; a great deal of building and renovating (on the Abbey- grounds there are seven large buildings and numerous small ones); many graduate degrees earned by the monks, the de velopment of the schools into the foremost junior college for young men in the state; a real emphasis placed upon liturgical life of the monks. BELMONT—The Belmont Ab bey College library is now- housed in the new building er- rected last year at a cost of $400,000. The Abbey Collection con tains a wide selection of stand ard and basic works in the var ious fields of the arts and sci ence. Over and above the refer ence books, there are incuna bula, imprints before 1600, Americana, Carolinana, works in Latin, Greek, French and Spanish. A recent addition was the SYNTOPICON with its com panion-volumes, the GREAT BOOKS OF THE WESTERN WORLD. In the last several years, particular efforts have been concentrated on building up a well-balanced and up-to- date collection for every depart ment or division of the new sen ior college. Of course, selection is a perennial problem because of the great number of scholarly popular works published an nually, but, by careful evalua tion, the best of modern thought and reasearch is made available for the professors and students alike . In 1942 the Bishop of Charles ton, S. C., presented to the Ab bey Library over five thousand volumes. This collection con sists of the books gathered by the former Bishops of Charles ton, from Bishop John England (1820) to Bishop William T. Rus sell (1927). Among the books in cluded in the collection are many volumes of interest to scholars and research students. The Americana, notably the his tories of South Carolina an the Church in the United States as well as classics, biographies, and controversial literature are sufficient to make the collection of great value. But without a doubt, the most valuable por tion is the complete Migne Col lection, which consists of the Patrologia Latina (the writings of the Latin Fathers of the Church), the Patrologia Gracea (the writings of the Greek Fa- Bishop Warns Against Ignoring Knowledge Of Past ERIE, Pa., May 28 (NC)—A warning to educators and stu dents to avoid the attitude that all study and work of the past has been “more or less wasted” was voiced here by Bishop John J. Wright of Pittsburgh. ( Speaking at Founder’s Day and honors convocation cere monies honoring Archbishop John Mark Gannon, Bishop of Erie and founder of Gannon College, Bishop Wright said an attitude that history has been waiting for the age of reason is too often prevalent in some col leges and universities. We are indebted to both the fools and wise men which pre ceded our generation of fools and wise men,” the Bishop added. “Yesterday’s error creat ed today’s truth.” Pointing out that Gannon Col lege, which was graduating its 15th class on Memorial Day, is sufficiently young to set its ob jectives and shape its traditions, Bishop Wright outlined several functions which a college should meet. He said colleges should stimu late intellectual initiative and a sense of historical perspective that will give the student the ability to see the evils of the present in terms of the bles sings of the past. . Bishop Wright also urged, that “spiritual resilience in the face of revolution, change and ad verse times” be instilled in stu dents to enable them to avoid “extremes of fright and ex tremes of boldness.” The world is full of seekers— some looking for trouble and others finding fault. thers), a complete course of Sa cred Scripture (Commentary), a Course in Sacred Theology, Ex planations of the Gospel, Sacred Orations, and the Encyclopedie Theologique—about 732 volumes in all. Also in the Bishop’s gift are the Bullarium Romanum, a collection of the official papers and decrees of the Popes down to the sixteenth century, and the monumental work of the Bel- landists, the Acta Sanctorum, scientific studies of the lives of the Saints. Many lesser collections ,large and small, have been given the Library down through the years, especially in the fields of law, religion, theology, literature, art, etc., which have helped im mensely to build up the various departments. The Librarian and Fathers are well pleased ovei the gift of any worthwhile book. Best Wishes To Belmont Abbey CYPRUS RESTAURANT SUPPLY CO.
