Cardinal
Teiesiiui
leal It 88
ROME, (Radio, NC)—Cardinal
Federico Tedeschini, 86, Arch
priest of St. Peter’s Basilica
and one of the six cardinal-
bishops, died at his home here
(Nov. 2) just two months after
undergoing major intestinal sur
gery.
Cardinal Tedeschini under
went surgery for an intestinal
obstruction of a cancerous na
ture in 1956, and had a seem
ingly complete recovery. He
was operated on again for the
same cause this past September
2. However, while he appeared
on the road to recovery and was
again able to celebrate Mass, he
took a turn for the worse on
October 28 and never recovered.
He collapsed on Sunday (Nov.
1), and received the last'sacra
ments at midnight from the
pastor of his parish, Santa
Maria in Via. Death came at
4:30 a. m. on All Souls’ Day.
His Holiness Pope John XXIII
expressed profound sorrow on
learning of the death. It reduces
the Sacred College of Cardinals
to 71 members. The same morn
ing, the Pontiff offered Mass for
the soul of Cardinal Tedeschini,
who served the Holy See vir
tually all of his 63 years as a
priest.
The Cardinal’s funeral took
place in St. Peter’s, in the
transept chapel of SS. Processus
and Martinian, at 10:30 a. m.
on November 4, the first an
niversary of Pope John’s coro
nation.
The tall, slim, white-haired
Cardinal Tedeschini was a
member of eight of the 12 ad
ministrative congregations of the
Holy See, and was Prefect of
one of them—the Sacred Con
gregation of the Basilica of St.
Peter. In addition, he was
Datarius of the Pope—head of
the Apostolic Datary, which is
entrusted with conferring cer
tain benefices and dispatching
papal bulls concerning them.
He was chosen to be a car
dinal by Pope Pius XI in March,
1933, while he was serving as
Apostolic Nuncio to the Spanish
republic. The Pope’s choice was
kept secret until the consistory
of December of 1935, however.
Despite tension between the
Church and the republican re
gime, the old tradition, that a

CORONATION ANNIVERSARY
MARKED BY POPE, CARDINALS,
BY MASS IN ST. PETER’S
(Radio, N.C.W.C. News Service)
VATICAN CITY — The first
anniversary of the coronation of
His Holiness Pope John XXIII
was celebrated with a Solemn
Papal Mass in St. Peter’s basili
ca.
The presence of many card
inals, prelates of the Roman
Curia, diplomats and thousands
of the faithful reflected the
spectacular pageantry of a year
ago.
Pope John, on a portable
throne, was borne into the
brightly lit splendor of the ba
silica between great white cer
emonial fans of ostrich plumes.
The procession was led by pre
lates and lay dignitaries of the
papal court.
As soon as the estimated
20,000 faithful caught sight of
the priestly figure clad in pa-
ceives his red biretta from the
chief of state on being named a
cardinal, was carried out before
Cardinal Tedeschini left the
country early in 1936.
The prelate had served as
Substitute Vatican Secretary of
State from 1914 until 1921 when
Pope Benedict XV named him
Nuncio to Spain. He was con
secrated Titular Archbishop of
Lepanto by Pope Benedict XV
on April 30, 1921.
Spain was beset by conflict
throughout the diplomat’s long
tenure as Nuncio. While he had
been a friend of the Spanish
royal family, he counseled
against a struggle against the
republican government when
monarchy was abolished in
1931. But the Spanish civil war
broke out only a few months
after his return to Rome in
1936.
Cardinal Tedeschini succeed
ed to the suburbicarian See of
Frascati on April 28, 1951, thus
becoming one of the six car
dinal bishops. He was Papal
Legate to the International
Eucharistic Congress in Bar
celona the following year, and
in 1954, after heading a papal
mission to a Marian congress in
Peru, visited the United States.
His increasing bouts with ill
ness did not remove him from
the active scene. Even after his
operation this September—
when for a time his life was
virtually despaired of—his
strong constitution enabled him
to resume his activities on a re
duced scale. He offered his last
Mass on October 28, shortly be
fore his fatal illness.
Cardinal Tedeschini’s death
left membership in the College
of Cardinals at 28 Italians, and
43 of other nationalities.
He is the fourth cardinal to
die during Pope John’s pontifi
cate. Cardinal Crisanto Luque,
Archbishop of Bogota, Colom
bia, died last May 7. The other
two members of the Sacred Col
lege to die in the past year were
Cardinals Georges Grente, Arch
bishop-Bishop of Le Mans,
France, who died on April 4,
and Jose Marie Caro Rodriguez,
Archbishop of Santiago, Chile,
who died last December 4.

pal mantle and tiara at the far
end of the church, loud and af
fectionate cheering broke out.
The Pontiff visibly moved,
blessed and saluted the throngs
he has become accustomed to
call “my children.”
When the procession arrived
at the aspe of the basilica, the
Pope descended from the port
able throne. After praying
briefly at the faldstool, he re
cited further prayers at the foot
of the altar with the celebrant
of the Mass, His Eminence Gio
vanni Battista Cardinal Mon-
tini, Archbishop of Milan. Then
he went to the throne prepared
at the left of the Altar of the
Chair.
The cardinals then came one
by one to the throne to make
their obedience to the Vicar of
Christ. Among them was His
Eminence Maurice Cardinal
Feltin, Archbishop of Paris,
who led a large French pilgrim
age to Rome for the annivers
ary. Cardinal Feltin, who is also
Military Vicar of the French
armed forces, had just returned
from a visit to French troops in
Algeria.
The Mass marking the papal
coronation anniversary is tradi
tionally offered by “the first
creature of the Pope” meaning
the first cardinal created by
him. Cardinal Montini is the
first of the 23 cardinals named
by Pope John last December.
On the Altar of the Chair, its
immense bronze reredos en
closing the relic of the chair of
St. Peter, was a reliquary con
taining a relic of St. Charles
Borromoeo. This was in defer
ence to Cardinal Montini and
his faithful in Milan, who on
the day were celebrating the
feast day of their great 16th-
century archbishop and patron.
BERLIN, (NC) — The chan
cery of the Warsaw archdio
cese declared that the strange
light which shone from the
tower of St. Augustine’s church
in downtown Warsaw in early
October was a “natural phe-
nometnon,” it was learned here.
The light above St. Augus
tine’s first appeared on the
night of October 7, the feast of
the Holy Rosary. Described as
a “luminous figure,” it brought
about rumors that it was an
apparition of the Blessed Vir
gin, and tens of thousands of
persons thronged the vicinity
of the church for several nights
afterwards.
Gov. G. Mennen Williams of
Michigan and Mrs. Williams,
then visiting Poland, witnessed
the light on the night of Octo
ber 10. Mr. Williams called it
“fantastic,” and his wife said
she had “never seen anything
like it before.”
The Warsaw chancery state
ment said that the throngs go
ing to St. Augustane’s were hin
dering “normal pastoral occu
pations,” and appealed to the
faithful to attend services in
their own parish churches. The
statement was read (Oct. 18) in
all the churches of the Polish
capital. It said:
“After gathering information
from the clergy of the parish
of St. Augustine in Warsaw, the
Warsaw Metropolitan Chancery
Office states that the luminous
phenomena taking place recent
ly around the tower of the
church of St. Augustine in
Nowolipie in Warsaw are in
terpreted as a natural phenome
non.
“The Warsaw Metropolitan
Chancery office appeals to all
the faithful to remain calm and
gather in their parish churches
for religious services, avoiding
going en masse to the., church
of St. Augustine, in which the
It also served to recall the
Pope’s own professed devotion
to St. Charles.
- At the conclusion of the Mass,
Pope John imparted his apos
tolic blessing to all present.
The papal procession was then
formed again, and left the basil
ica amid cheering, as it had en
tered.
Throughout the day, tele
grams of good wishes poured
into Vatican City from all over
the world. The city itself was
hung with white and yellow
papal colors, and almost all the
offices of the Roman Curia
were on holiday schedule.
