Alfred didn’t lust after power or wealth but wished only to pro tect his people of Wessex and, indeed, of all England. Alfred of Wessex is a book that shows Alfred the leader and warrior when he conquered the pagan Danes. It also shows Alfred the Christian and scholar when he taught the common people as well as the nobles to read and write. ' * * * THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE- by Morris L. West, Morrow, $3.95. (Reviewed by Flannery O’Connor) The Devil's Advocate is a swiftly moving novel concerned with a priest’s return to spirit ual reality in the last few months of his life. Msgr. Meri- dith, dying of cancer, is sent to a small Italian mountain vil lage to investigate for beatifi cation a man murdered fourteen years before by Communist par- tians. In the course of his in vestigation, he learns to care for souls, to become a pastor in the real sense, and to meet death in the act of trying to save anoth er. Parallel to this interest is the investgation itself and the question of the supposed saint and his possible sanctity. This latter line of action makes of the book a kind of mystery novel and undoubtedly accounts for its presence on the best seller list. The best seller list is a standard of mediocrity through which occasionally a work of merit will slip for rea sons unconnected with its qual ity. In spite of a style which is more frequently deft than dis tinguished, The Devil's Advo- BLESSED MOTHER AND SHRINE Etched on a maple leaf from the campus of Manhattan Col lege, New York City, the Blessed Mother looks admiringly at the newly dedicated National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, in Washington, D. C. It is the work of Brother Adrian Lewis, F.S.C., placement director at the college, whose hobby has been the art of portraying religious scenes on leaves and rose petals. (NC Photos) cate is a work of merit. It is also what can safely be called a Catholic novel, being both explicitly concerned with a certain aspect of the life of the Church, and implicitly directed by Catholic belief. As a novel it is a curious blend of slick ness and profundity. It is al most as if a very good and a mediocre novel had been stitch ed together with a jagged line to make one book. The investi gating priest is always believ able, the investigated candidate for beatification almost never so. This book is well worth read ing for its virtues and we have its faults to thank for its being read so widely. * * * THE CHRISTIAN LIFE CAL ENDAR, 1959-1960, by Msgr. Edward V. Dailey and Rev.
