The universality of the Catholic Church is clearly represented
by. the membership of the completed Sacred College of Car
dinals when Pope John XXIII proclaims 8 new cardinals at
the consistory of December 14, 1959. Prepared by N.C.W.C.

Hat on all five continents showing the number in each of the
27 countries represented in the completed college which will

Meyer and Alois Cardinal
Muench received the official
notification of their nomination
as cardinals at the North Ameri
can College here.
They were surrounded at the
ceremony by many other
American bishops and priests
and members of their families.
Also present were U. S. Ambas
sador James D. Zellerbach and
the faculty and students of the
North American College.
At eleven in the morning
(Dec. 14), the official messen
gers from the Vatican Secre
tariat of State and Chancery of
the Holy Roman Church enter
ed the North American College
dining hall, which had been
converted into a temporary re
ception hall. They delivered the
two documents which stated
that His Holiness Pope John
XXIII and the Sacred College
of Cardinals meeting in secret
consistory had approved the
nomination of the two cardinals
to the Sacred College.
Cardinal Meyer and Cardinal
Muench were seated on two
thrones facing the approximate
ly 500 assembled guests. Flank
ing either side of them were
seated the archbishops and
bishops who had come from the
United States for the occasion.
Members of the Cardinals’ fam
ilies were first-row guests.
Messengers, headed by a mas
ter of pontifical ceremonies,
Msgr. Giuseppe Calderari, went
first to the throne of Cardinal
Muench. The messengers of the
Cardinal Secretary of State con
signed the “biglietto di nomina”
(notice of nomination) to Card
inal Muench who then gave it
to Archbishop Martin J. O’Con
nor, rector of the North Ameri
can College, to read.

Chancery presented the decree
of nomination which was hand
ed to Msgr. Guido del Mestri,
Internuncio to British East and
West Africa who until Septem
ber was -an aide to the then
Archbishop Muench at the nun
ciature in Bonn. Msgr. del Mes
tri too read the decree.
Then the messengers present
ed the same documents to Card
inal Meyer. Msgr. Edward
Burke, chancellor of the Arch
diocese of Chicago, read the
notice of nomination and Msgr.
Cletus O’Donnell, vice-chan
cellor, read the decree of the
Apostolic Chancery.
After the brief ceremony,
punctuated by the flashing
bulbs of news cameramen, there
was a rousing applause from the
guests.
Msgr. Calderari addressed a
brief speech of greeting to the
two cardinals expressing “best
wishes and blessings of His Hol
iness Pope John XXIII together
with similar expression of my
own and those of the entire
Sacred College of His Holiness.”
Cardinal Muench, speaking
on behalf of Cardinal Meyer
and in his own behalf, respond
ed in Italian saying:
“In this moment of profound
emotkft, iftr us, new cardinals
of the Holy Roman Church, we
raise our, thoughts to God, the
Giver of every good, to thank
Him for having granted to us
in His admirable designs the
grace to be counted among the
members of the Sacred College.
“Our devout and graceful
thoughts are turned also toward
the Supreme Pontiff, His Holi
ness Pope John XXIII.
“To his august person we ex
press the sentiments of our pro
found gratitude and of our fil
ial devotion for having deigned
to raise us to the sacred purple.
“As devout sons of the
Church, it pleases us to renew
publicly in this solemn hour,
the expression of our profound
and sincere attachments to this
holy mother for whose exalta
tion we intend to work with all
our strength.
“Help us with your fervent
prayer to correspond faithfully
to God’s loving designs for us
and to bear worthily the new
responsibilities imposed upon us
by the high dignity.”

Chaplains attending Cardinal
Muench during the ceremony
were Msgr. Alberto Giovannet-
ti of the Vatican Secretariat of
State, and Father Joseph Sen-
ger, Cardinal Muench’s private
secretary. Chaplains attending
Cardinal Meyer were two Chi
cago priests stationed abroad—
Msgrs. Paul C. Marcinkus, a
member of the Vatican Secre
tariat of State, and Msgr. Jos
eph Howard, rector of the resi
dence for Chicago priests study
ing in Rome.
Members of Cardinal
Muench’s immediate family
present were Mrs. Mary Herrick
of Milwaukee, Joseph Muench
of Neenah, Wis., Frank Muench
of Elm Grove, Wis.; and Teresa
Muench and Mrs. Dorothy Ott,
both of Milwaukee. Cardinal
Meyer’s immediate family pre
sent included Mr. and Mrs. Ed
mund Meyer of Milwaukee; Mr.
and Mrs. Norbert Meyer of Elm
Grove, Wis.; and a sister, Sister
Therese of the Sisters of St. Ag
nes of Fonddu Lac, Wis.
In the afternoon following the
ceremony of the “biglietto” the
two cardinals were again at the
North American College to re
ceive the traditional greetings
from gentlemen in waiting of
the other cardinals named in
the same consistory together
with greetings from members of
the diplomatic Missions at the
Holy See and many other
friends.
