WASHINGTON—His Holiness
Pope John XXIII gave some
five million students in U. S.
Catholic schools a pointed re
minder that “there are still mil
lions of children who are suffer
ing” throughout the world.
“Many do not have the proper
food to be well, many others
have not enough clothing to
protect them when the bitter
winter comes; and, in number
less cases, this is made worse
because their homes are little
more than shacks and hovels,”
the Pope stressed.
The Pope’s Ash Wednesday
address opened the Catholic
school children's phase of the
14th annual Bishops’ Relief
Fund appeal, which will con
tinue throughout Lent. At the
request of the Pontiff, Cincin
nati’s Archbishop Karl J. Alter,
chairman of the National Cath
olic Welfare Conference admini
stration board, with headquar
ters here, read the Pope’s ad
dress to the school children. It
was broadcast by the country’s
major radio networks.
The music and choral back
ground for the broadcast was
performed by students of the
Pius X school of Liturgical Mu
sic of Manhattanville College of
the Sacred Heart, Purchase,, N.
Y., under the direction of Mother
Josephine Morgan of the Reli
gious of the Sacred Heart.
For the past several years,
the Catholic school children, as
a result of Lenten sacrifices,
have contributed more than one
million dollars annually to the
Bishops’ Relief Fund. The year
ly appeal is sponsored by the
U. S. Catholic Bishops and con
ducted by Catholic Relief Serv
ices — National Catholic Wel
fare Conference, worldwide re
lief and rehabilitation agency
maintained by the U. S. Hier
archy.
The adult phase of the cam
paign, which has a goal of five
million dollars, will be conduct
ed, generally, on Laetare Sun
day, March 27, in parishes
throughout the country. The
Bishops’ Relief Fund is the
principal source for financing
CRS-NCWC operations, which
were conducted last year in 62
countries and aided more than
forty million needy of the
world.
Pope John told the American
school children that the plight
of millions of children in the
world was brought about in
many cases because they “had
to flee persecution and they
were forced to leave all their
belongings behind.” He added:
“In the confusion of war and
oppression, many have lost their
fathers and mothers and have
been deprived of the love of
fond parents. They have no
homes and no schools such as
you have, and often they know
very little about God and there
fore they have little chance of
loving Him.”
Appealing to the generosity
of the American school children,
the Pope said: “We come to you
to encourage you to continue
helping your dear friends in
Christ. You can do this, first of
all, by praying for them . . . We
are sure that God will not re
fuse your pleas.” He added that
“during Lent, which is a time
for penance and sacrifice, you
can help them materially by
giving them gifts” through CRS-
NCWC.
“You might ■ be tempted to
say that your offerings are too
small to do any good; but when
you remember that there are so
many of you, you will realize
that your contributions, whether
clothing, coins or whatever you
give, can mount up to relief
supplies of considerable size,”
the Pope said. “Through your
beloved bishops and their or
ganization, you can be very ef
fective in assisting these suffer
ing children.”
Concluding his mes'sage, the
Pope imparted to the American
Catholic school children, their
teachers, parents and families
“Our fatherly blessing as a
pledge of copious graces and
favors from Our Lord.”
The full text of the Pope’s
message follows:
It was a year ago We ad
dressed Our first message to
you, Our dear children in the
Catholic Schools of America.
Now, We write to you once
again and We feel that We
know you a little better than
We did last year.
During 1959 the Bishops of
the United States came to Rome
to make their regular five-year
visit and We had the pleasure
of meeting with all of them.
They told Us about the prayers
which the children in America
were offering for the Common
Fathers and for His intentions.
We were much consoled to learn
of your prayers for Us, because
We know that God will hear
you and bestow on the Church
His blessings and His unfailing
protection.
For many years now, at the
beginning of Lent,, the Vicar of
Christ has talked to you and has
written to you about the chil
dren all over the world who
have not been as fortunate as
you. We know that you are in
terested in these children and
that you are willing to show
your love for them, by helping
them in whatever way you can;
We Ourselves saw the fruits of
your generosity last year, when
your contributions in money in
clothing enabled Us to assist
countless families who were in
need.
Even today, while you are
enjoying the many gifts that
God in His Providence has giv
en to you and to your great na
tion, there are still millions of
children who are suffering.

Many do not have the proper
food to be well; many others
have not enough clothing to
protect them when the bitter
winter comes; and in number
less cases, this is made worse
because their homes are little
more than shacks and hovels.
The reason for this is that
many had to flee persecution
and they were forced to leave
all their belongings behind. In
the confusion of war and op
pression, many have lost their
fathers and mothers and have
been deprived of the love of
fond parents. They have no
homes and no school such as
you have, and often they know
very little about God and there
fore they have little chance of
loving Him.
And so We come to you to en
courage you to continue helping
your dear friends in Christ. You
can do this, first of all, by pray
ing for them: Ask God to pro
tect these children and to keep
them free from sin and its oc
casions; plead with Him on
their behalf that they may have
the strength to resist the temp
tations threatening their souls.
We are sure that God will not
refuse your pleas, because they
come from hearts which are
pure and dedicated to Him.
Secondly, during Lent, which
is a time of penance and sacri
fice, you can help them materi
ally by giving the gifts. Through
their organization called the Ca
tholic Relief Services, your
Bishops have been sending aid
to suffering peoples all over
the world for years, because
the Catholics in America have
been very generous and sym
pathetic.
You might be tempted to say
that your offerings are too
small^ to do any good; but when
you remember that there are so
many of you, you will realize
that your contributions, whether
clothing, coins, or whatever you
give, can mount up to relief
supplies of considerable size.
Through your beloved Bishops
and their organization, you can
be very effective in assisting
these suffering children.
If it were possible We would
like to tell you of the many
heart-rendering appeals which
reach Us every day, and which
cause Us much sorrow. We feel
confident that help will soon
reach them, because you have
been so generous in the past,
and We are certain that you will
try to do your best again this
year. Your priests and Sisters
TKE CHAPTER
AT BELMONT
BELMONT — The Eta Beta
Chapter of Belmont Abbey Col
lege was installed officially to
Tau Kappa Epsilon National
Fraternity Sunday, February, 14.
The ceremonies began Friday
evening with a written exami
nation and ended Sunday eve
ning with a banquet at the
Charcoal Steak House in Char
lotte.
Thirty-five Abbeymen were
installed into Tau Kappa Epsi
lon, the largest social fraternity
in the world. Tau Kappa Epsi
lon, founded in 1899 boasts over
165 chapters, and is a fraternity
that strives to engender a
healthy spirit of association and
endeavor among all students of
the college — fraternity and
non-fraternity alike. Selection
of members for TKE is based
on nobility of character rather
than on rank or wealth; char
acter is the foundation stone on
which Teke stands.
The Eta Beta Chapter of Tau
Kappa Epsilon at Belmont Ab
bey College was originally
formed by a group of boys who
called themselves the West
phalians. The group “took on”
the characteristics of a frater
nity rather than a club — in
hope of one day fulfilling their
dream of becoming a chapter
of national fraternity. After be
ing approached by several na
tional fraternities — the West
phalians decided TKE was the
best for them.
Dave Gardiner, the president
of the newly installed chapter
commented after the closing
ceremonies “Our dream has
finally come true. We have
worked hard, but is was all
worth it.”
will tell you how you can play
your part.
These poor suffering children
will be able to be happy when
they receive your help, and
they will pray for you and be
seech God to continue to bless
you and your families and your
great country. Christ said what
ever you do to the least of
these, you do to Him (cf. Matt.
25, 40). You can be sure that
Our Divine Lord will reward
you very liberally in proportion
to your generosity in giving.
In order; to show Our appre
ciation and gratitude for your
prayers and for the assistance
which you have given Us, We
extend to you and to your teach

fatherly blessing as a pledge of
