v t. 4 College Of Cardinals At All Time High Of 85 THE BULLETIN, March 19, 1960—PAGE 3 Legion Condemns "Private Lives Of Adam And Eve" NEW YORK, (NC) — The Na tional Legion of Decency has placed the movie “The Private Lives of Adam and Eve,” star ring Mickey Rooney and Mamie Van Doren, in its class “C” — condemned — classification. The legion said the movie is “blasphemous and sacrilegious in its presentation of man’s sex life as the invention of the devil rather than the handiwork of God.” It also said that the movie makes use of the Book of Gene sis account of the origin of man kind “to exploit the sensation al” in an “atmosphere of buf foonery.” The film was branded as an “unconscionable offense to re ligion” by the legion, which ac cused the producer of restoring to “indecencies and pornogra phy that are blatant violations of Judaeo-Christian standards of modesty and decency.” The film was produced by Al bert Zugsmith and released by Universal-International. The le gion expressed regret that the movie was given a Production Code Seal of approval by the Motion Picture Association of America. This is the first time since 1956, the legion said, that it has condemned a film of a major .American motion picture com pany. In 1956 the legion con demned the movie “Baby Doll,” produced by Warner Brothers. News Service) VATICAN CITY — His Holi ness Pope John XXIII has nam ed seven new cardinals, raising the Sacred College to a record high of 85 members. The new cardinals include the first Negro, first Filipino and first Japanese to be named to the cardinalate. The new members of the Sacred College will be elevated to their posts at a Vatican con sistory on March 28. The new cardinals and their order of precedence are: Arch bishops Luigi Traglia, Vicege rent of Rome; Peter Tatsuo Doi of Tokyo; Joseph Lefebvre of Bourges, France) Bernard Al frink of Utrecht, the Nether lands, and Rufino J. Santos of Manila; Bishop Laurian Rugam bwa of Rutabo, Tanganyika, and Msgr. Antonio Bacci, Sec retary of Briefs to Princes. Bishop Rugambwa becomes the first Negro to be named a cardinal, and the second card inal for Africa. The other one is His Eminence Teodosio Cle mente Cardinal de Gouveia, Archbishop of Lorenzo Marques, in Mozambique, Por tuguese East Africa. Archbishop Rugambwa speaks Kihaya, a Bantu language, as his native tongue. He also speaks Swahili, English and Italian. Archbishop Doi is the first Japanese cardinal and also the first cardinal for Japan. Archbishop Santos is the first cardinal for the Philippines. The Archbishop speaks Spanish and English, as well as Tagalog, national language of the Philip pines. When the seven cardinals are elevated on March 28, Pope John will have created 38 card- Wounded In War Greatest Latinist The secret of getting things done is to do a little at a time. Msgr. Antonio Bacci, one of the seven new Cardinals just named by His Holiness Pope John XXIII, has written in Latin 120 encyclical letters for three Popes—Pius XI, Pius XII and John XXIII. Called probably the greatest Latinist in the world, he has served the Vatican for 30 years. He was Secretary of Papal Briefs to Princes.—(NC Photos). At the death of Pope Pius XII, there were 52 cardinals. At the first consistory of Pope John’s reign — December 15, 1958 — 23 cardinals were cre ated, raising the Sacred College to 74 members. One of the old cardinals had died before the consistory. On December 14, 1959, Pope John named eight new card inals. This brought the number of cardinals to 79, since three more cardinals had died. The recent death (Feb. 10) of Card inal Alojzije Stepinac of Yugo slavia reduced the number to 78. The two Italian nominees for the cardinalate bring the num ber of Italian cardinals to 33. Archbishop Joseph Lefebvre of Bourges, France, whom His Holiness Pope John XXIII has just named to the Sacred College of Cardinals, served in the French army in World War I, was severely wounded and underwent four surgical operations because of his wound before beginning his studies for the priesthood. O’Con nor, rector of Rome’s North American College, has given His Holiness Pope John XXIII a copy of a film on the history of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D. C. The movie, produced for tele casting by the National Council of Catholic Men in the U. S., was sent to Rome by Arch bishop Patrick A. O’Boyle of Washington.
