It gives symbolic ex pression to liturgical happen ings, reminds us of Christ, the Light of the World, Who is con sumed by the fire of His im mense love for man to death. At the same time this burning can dle is a constant reminder of our Baptismal, Communion and Death candle. It serves as a warning and a spur for the com ing of Christ in the Paschal Communion, and finally of the coming of the all-knowing Judge after our death. Sometimes six candles are used in the following way: On the evening of Ash Wed nesday, and thereafter every evening during Lent the family gathers around a crucifix. The six tall blessed candles or votive lights are lighted by one of the children. After the Lesson and hymn one of the candles is extinguish ed by one of the children to in dicate the approach of the pas sion of Christ, the approach of Good Friday darkness. While the other five candles remain burning the lather says a prayer. On the second Sunday and during the following week two candles are extinguished and so on, each week until on Good Friday all the candles are ex tinguished. On Holy Saturday the little shrine is dark until af ter the prayer when the father lights a larger and more beau tiful single “Easter” candle which is placed before the cru cifix. EASTER VIGIL CANDLE St. Augustine called the East er night-watch the “mother of all holy vigils.” Reference, from early Christian writings indicate that candles and lamps were used in great quantities during these early celebrations of the Easter vigil. At this service all receive and hold the flame tak en' from the Easter candle. The candle held by the faithful must be of pure, natural beeswax. The Easter Vigil ceremonies in which the laity participate comprise three parts — the Light Service, the Baptismal Service and the Eucharistic Service. Through this restored vigil service the laity join in the prayers and ceremonies center ing around the Paschal Candle, which represents Christ, the Light of the World. The people assist in spreading the Light of Christ by holding their candles which have receiv ed the flame of the newly bless ed Paschal Candle and passing on to their neighbors that “light which illumines all men!” In the seecond part which centers around the altar, they sing the various responses in the Litur gy and also renew their baptis mal vows with a lighted candle in hand. TRIPLE CANDLE The traditional ceremony of the lighting of the three branch ed candle from the new fire on the Saturday before Easter can be traced to the twelfth century. This has been replaced in the new Easter Vigil Service by the successive lighting of the candle held by the priest, those held by the clergy and finally those of the faithful as the procession moves through the darkened church preceded by the Paschal candle. The symbolism of the Resur rection of Our Saviour remains the same. Formerly each prong of a three branched candle car ried by the deacon was succes sively lighted as the procession to the high altar moved into the church. According to the rubrics the candljss should be ar ranged on a reed holding the three candles in triangular for ST. PASCHAL CANDLE The large finely decorated Paschal candle, burning on the gospel side of the high altar dur ing certain masses, from Holy Saturday until Ascension Tues day, symbolizes Christ the Light of the World. The rich symbol ism of this candle made at least in the greatest part of pure, natural beeswax, glowing with the antiquity of the Church it self, was in use during the time of St. Jerome (347-420). It’s ori gin is veiled in the mists of .an tiquity. This candle was originally a wax column carrying the dates of the movable feasts. These were later written on paper and fixed to the candle, a custom which still survives in some churches. Medieval artisans vied with one another to glorify the candle and its holder by making them of exceptional size and beautiful ornamentation. Into the small openings of the Easter candle are placed five grains of incense, previously blessed by the celbrant. Over these are inserted five pieces of red wax moulded into the form of nails, thus symbolizing the five. wounds retained by the Saviour in His glorified body. Eulogizing the Easter candle, this most appropriate symbol of the Risen Redeemer, the deacon prays as he sings: “O truly blessed night, which despoiled the Egyptians and enriched the Hebrews! The night in which heavenly things are joined to those of earth the things divine to those of man! We, therefore, pray Thee, Lord, that this can dle, consecrated in honor of Thy name, may continue unfailing to scatter the darkness of this night. May it be received as a sweet fragrance, and mingle with the lights of heaven. May the morning star find its flame alight, that Morning Star which knows no setting, which came back from Limbo and shed its Gordon's "Magic-Pak" Potato Chips Are Better Because They Are FRESH! 25c THE BULLETIN, April 16, 1960—PAGE 3 clear light upon mankind.
