Pope Confirms
Election Of New
Belmont Abbot
VATICAN CITY, (Radio, NC)
His Holiness Pope John XXIII
has confirmed the election of
Abbot Walter Arthur Coggin,
O.S.B., as Abbot of Belmont Ab
bey in North Carolina.
At the same time the jurisdic
tion of the Abbot has been con
fined to the abbey itself.
Abbot Coggin was elected ab
bot in November after the death
of Abbot Vincent G. Taylor,
O.S.B., who had governed the
abbey and its dependent terri
tory since 1924. He had been
serving as vicar to Abbot Taylor
and president of Belmont Abbey
College since 1956.
Abbot Coggin was born Feb
ruary 10, 1916, in Richmond, Va.
He received his secondary edu
cation at Benedictine High
School there and at Loyola High
School in Los Angeles, Calif. He
attended Belmont Abbey Junior
College (it is now a four-year in
stitution) and St. Benedict’s Col
lege in Atchison, Kan. He was
ordained in 1943, and received
a doctorate from the Catholic
University of America.
Theology for
The Layman
(Continued from Page 4)
on the Cross is related to that.
So with His words to Our Lady
and St. John. It was as part of
His plan of redemption, that He
was giving her to be the Mother
of John—not of John as him
self but as man. From that mo
ment she is the Mother of us all.
What does motherhood carry
with it? Essentially love and
total willingness to serve. Those
two things Catholics have al
ways seen in her, telling her
their needs with complete con
fidence, inwardly conversing
with her freely. That is, we
pray to her; which means that
we ask her to pray for us—for
all kinds of things, but especial
ly for grace, which is what mat
tered most to her (matters most
to us too though we do not al
ways realize it). In the encycli
cal Ad diem St. Pius X called
her “The first steward in the
dispensing of graces.”
With this we come to an ele
ment in the redemption which
we too easily fail to notice.
Christ redeemed us, but it is
in God’s plan that the applica
tion to individual souls of the
redemption Christ won should
be by fellow members of the
race: we are all called to be
stewards in the dispensing of
graces. The principal ways for
every one of us are love, prayer,
suffering.
None of these things would be
of any effect if Christ had not
died for us; but in union with
His redemptive act they are of
immense power. From the be
ginning of the Christian Church,
their effect is taken for granted.
Thus St. Paul can tell his con
verts to pray for others precise
ly because there is one mediator
between God and man (1 Tim.
II. 5). In other wards the fact that
Our Lord is mediator does not
make our prayer for one an
other unnecessary; it makes it
effective.
Everyone’s prayers can help
others, but the holier, the more.
With Christ and in Christ we
are all called upon to take a
part in redeeming others. All
are meant to have a part in His
redeeming work, but she above
all: for she was sinless, she was
wholly love, she suffered su
premely.
The Mystical Body exists for
the application of Christ’s re
demption to the souls of men;
as I have said, we are all called
upon to help in the application,
but she is the Co-redemptress.
So that once again she repre
sents the race, the redeemed
race. So much of what we say
when we speak of her and when
we speak of the Church is inter
changeable—we call her our
Mother for instance and in the
breath we speak of our holy
Mother the Church. The truth
is that what the Church, the
Mystical Body, does in its other
members more or less well ac
cording to the individual’s will to
co-operate, she in her single
person does continuously and
perfectly. She is ’ the first
steward in the dispensing of
graces.

QUESTION
BOX
(Continued from Page 4)
encyclicals and statements—
Pius IX himself described it as
“raw meat needing to be cook
ed.” As such, it was issued as
an appendix to an encyclical.
Pope Pius expected that bishops
throughout the world (the Syl
labus” was not addressed di
rectly to the faithful as a
whole) would use it as a ready
reference for the original papal
statements in which the indexed
errors were carefully defined
and explained at length.
THE PROPOSITIONS reject
ed by Pius IX were condemned
in the precise sense intended
by those who held these same
propositions true. Moreover, the
pontiff did not mean to imply
that the direct contradictories
of these propositions were cor
rect. For example, it is utterly
unreasonable to imply, as Bish
op Pike implies, that Proposi
tion 55 (i.e., “the Church ought
to be separated from the State
and the State from the Church”)
is false in the sense that the
separation of church and state
is everywhere and always
wrong. And so with the other
propositions of the “Syllabus.”
Q. Hasn't Bishop Pike a point
in claiming that we should take
the "Syllabus" as it reads,
though, instead of "reading
into" it?
A. Any official statement by
a person or moral body should
be understood not as it reads to
any Tom, Dick or Harry, but
as it was intended to read by
the one who formulated it.
DIDN'T MARTIN LUTHER
once say, “Sin boldly, but be
lieve more boldly?” Should we
take this affirmation at face
value and hold that Luther en
couraged the commission of sin?
Of course not. The rational and
the fair approach is to study
Luther’s assertion in its proper
context. So too, with other very
odd statements made by him,
such as “lying is a virtue.”
THE SAME holds true with
the “Syllabus.” When Pius IX
rejected what he termed “sepa
ration,” for instance, the con
text of the original pronounce
ment simply indexed in the
“Syllabus” makes it quite clear
that the kind of separation he
had in mind meant atheistic
separation or open hostility on
the part of the State toward the
Church. <

DORIS REVERE PETERS
YOUTH
TALK IT OVER . . .
DON'T 'TELL' DAD ANYTHING
Dear Doris:
I have a part time job after
school. I get $15 a week salary
and my father thinks I should
hand it over to him. I want to
pay my tuition at school with
this money and keep what is
left for incidentals and spend
ing money. What should I tell
my father?
Jim R.
Dear Jim:
Don’t tell your father any
thing. Discuss it with him. Since
you are old enough to work you
are at a time in life when in
dependence means a great deal
to you. This is natural. It is laso
natural during our teens to be
gin establishing a more “adult”
relationship with our parents.
Here is an excellent opportunity
for .you to begin. Have a “man
to man” talk with your father
about who takes care of your
salary.
Your father has had a lot of
experience managing money.
He knows the value of a dollar,
He also knows a lot about you,
Jim. Perhaps you are extrava
gant. Are you ready for this
kind of experience? How well
have you managed your allow
ance? Your dad may have plans
for putting all the money in the
bank to save for you. Whatever
his reasons are, sit down, talk
it over and find out.
Nothing gives you a better
appreciation of the value of
money than having to earn and
manage your own. In your case
it would give you some good
experience too. It is a sign of
maturity that you want to ac
cept this responsibility. What
you have to do is prove to your
dad that you are ready for it.
Prepare a budget to show
your father how you plan to
use the $15. Ask his advice
about it. Ask his approval for a
“trial run” for one month. Stick
to this budget and prove you
are not extravagant. This will
start building up your father’s
confidence in you. If you do a
good job the first month he may
have enough confidence in you
to let you continue. If you
continue. If you don’t you will
have to accept his plans.
And Jim, this is an excellent
opportunity for you to demon
strate that you really know
the meaning of the fourth com
mandment. By cooperating with
your dad you are showing you
have a genuine interest and con
sideration for his wishes—and
respect for his authority. I am
sure he will cooperate with you
too.
EMOTIONS GOOD
IF CONTROLLED
Dear Doris:
I’m a, sophomore in high
school. I have a terrible temper.
My friends say I’m too emo
tional. Aren’t emotions good?
Susan L.
Dear Susan:
Yes, emotions are good. When
God created us He gave us
many emotions—or feelings, as
they are sometimes described.
Feelings such as joy, fear, anger,
love. When used for the greater
glory of God and the fulfillment
of our purpose in life emotions
are good. They are necessary
for the mature development of
a true Christian personality.
But, to remain good they must
be controlled. And, to have the
proper influence on our per
sonalities, they must be guided.
So, all through our lives we
strive to become emotionally
mature by intelligently control
ling our emotions. During ado
lescence we should begin to
learn how to guide them and to
develop self-control.
If your friends say you are
“too emotional” and if you do
have a “terrible temper” it
means you are not controlling
some feeling. And so it causes
you to “lose” your temper. Per
haps it is fear, or anger, or jeal
ousy. Whatever it is you must
learn to recognize it and con
trol it. Or you will lose your
friends too.
There are various techniques
for learning self-control. Many
people have been helped by
saying this little prayer:
“Hail, Mary, full of grace.
Keep my temper in its place.”
However, the soundest long
term program for temper con
trol is the imitation of Christ.
Think of the many situations in
our Lord’s life which called for
kindness and patience in deal
ing with others. Concentrate on
being charitable. You will have
opportunities to practice self-
control in situations which arise
in school. Use them.
If you want to control your
weight you control the amount
of candy you eat. If you want .
to impress a new teacher you :
control the impulse to talk in
her class. If you can control
these simple feelings—and your
temper—now, you will be pre
pared to control the emotions
you encounter as you grow old
er. And you are well on your
way becoming an “emotionally”
mature adult.
