McDonough, D.D., J a €3, 10th Bishop of Savannah n The magnificent Cathedral of St. John the Baptist was the scene of the installation of Bishop McDonough. This beautiful edifice is synonymous with the Catholic Faith in the Diocese of Savannah. The original Cathedral was destroyed by fire the evening of February 13, 1898. Construction work began on the present structure with Holv Mass being offered for the first time in the basement of the new Cathedral on December 24, 1899. The Most Reverend Sebastian Martinelli, Archbishop of Ephesus and Apostolic Delegate to the United States, dedicated the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist on October 28, 1900. The Solemn consecration of the Cathedral took place on June 3, 1920.
