Standing on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, in Rome, His Holiness Pope John
XXIII imparts his Easter blessing, “urbi et orbi” (to the city and the world). Some 200,000 per
sons brayed a steady rain to gather in St. Peter’s Square. In a somber Easter message the Pope
denounced.the evil forces who persecute their fellow men because of race, religion or politics.

The body of Joseph Maxi
milian Bruckner, identified by
a passport photograph, was
found by a Vatican guard early
in the morning of April 10. An
empty tube of barbiturics and
a bottle of some unidentified
fluid at first led to suspicions of
suicide. However, autopsy re
vealed that death had been
caused by a heart attack.
As soon as the cause of death
had been established, the grot
toes, which had been closed for
two days, were again opened for
the celebration of Mass.

PONTIFF SPEAKS WITH SORROW IN EASTER
MESSAGE OF VICTIMS OF RACE PREJUDICE
AND POVERTY, OF THOSE DENIED FREEDOM
(Radio, N.C.W.C. News Service)
VATICAN CITY — His Holi
ness Pope John XXIII spoke
with sorrow in His Easter mes
sage of those who suffer because
of their race or poverty or be
cause they are denied personal,
civil and religious freedom.
At the same time the Pontiff
exoressed the joy of good Chris
tians who at Easter pay “hom
age to the Redeemer, Jesus
Christ, glorious and immortal
forever, Victor over death and
human wickedness.”
The Pope spoke on a rainv
Easter to an estimated 100,000
persons in St. Peter’s square
standing under varicolored um
brellas. His message was carried
bv Eurovision, the TV hookup
that covers most of western Eu
rope, and by Vatican Radio and
Radio Free Europe.
Anticipating that these and
the press might carry his mes
sage behind the Iron Curtain,
where many Catholics “have
been enduring restraint and vio
lence and perfecting a: sacrifice
wrought in silence and continu
ous oppression,” the Pope said:
“Would that these could also
hear at least an echo of their fa
ther’s voice offering them com
fort and reaching them from the
center of Catholic unity.”
The Pone’s message crowned
a Lent during which he had
gone out to meet these he calls
“his children.” On the first four
Sundays of Lent he went to
churches in four of Rome’s poor
er districts. On Holy Thursday
he took part in a traditional ce
remony when he washed the
feet of 13 nriests from all parts
of the world, including the U. S.,
Africa and Asia. On Good Fri
day he went on foot through the
Basilica of St. Mary Major to
attend the chanting of the Pas
sion.
On Easter he presided at Mass
in St. Peter’s, packed by some
30,000 people, and afterwards
went to the central balcony ov
er looking the square to address
the crowd, which included pil
grims from many nations.
Echoing his predecessor, St.
Gregory I, Pope John called
Easter “nothing less than a most

YOUTH
MISUNDERSTOOD?
TRY TO BE UNDERSTANDING
Dear Doris:
I would like to be able to talk
to my mother. I don’t have the
feeling I can confide in her and
I don’t know how to overcome
this feeling. I’m not ashamed of
anything I do but my mother
just wouldn’t understand.
Phil
Dear Phil:
It sounds as if you aren’t giv
ing your mother half a chance.
If you just “feel” she wouldn’t
understand, and you don’t really
know, you should try her and
see what happens.
Understanding is a two way
street. So, let me ask you, do
you understand your mother?
All parents are snowed under
these days with free advice on
how to get along with their
young offspring. They are told
you need more independence —
or less independence. They have
expert advice from other par
ents and non-parents on what to
do and what not to do. In their
ardent desire to do what is right
they sometimes leave the wrong
impression.
Your mother might be trying
to give you the independence
most teenage boys crave. Her
only concern is your welfare.
She is vitally interested in ev
erything you do. In fact, she
may be so interested in helping
you become independent that
she seems to lack interest and
understanding. Yet she is inter
ested in you and understands
you better than you think.
Mothers have a great capaci
ty for warmth and understand
ing, Phil, particularly where
their sons are concerned. How
ever, she may need a little en
couragement to show her un
derstanding. And you can do
something about this.
Conversation is the best road
to understanding. So, talk to
your mother. Talk to her about
herself and her interests. Get to
know her. And then talk about
yourself. Start talking about lit
tle things and you’ll be surpris
ed how soon you’re talking
about big things.
Ask your mother’s advice
about your school work or the
color of your tie. Volunteer for
household chores. Occasionally
go to the supermarket with her.
When she drops something pick
it up. Open and close doors for
her. Forfeit a Friday night with
your friends and take your mo
ther to a movie. She needs your
love and understanding as much
as you need hers. Show her your
love and respect and mutual un
derstanding can’t help but fol
low.
CONFUSION —
OR JUST GROWING
Dear Doris:
It is true that when you reach
the age of 16 you are supposed
to be a little confused about
your outlook on life because you
are in the “in-between” age?
Sally
Dear Sally:
It is certainly not true. Those
wonderful terrible teens — be
tween 13 and 20 — are a time of
change. You do a lot of changing
and a lot of growing. And at
times you may be confused just
as you may be happy, angry and
sad. But, you are not “supposed
to be confused about your out
look on life.”
During these years we grow
both physically and emotionally.
Our physical growth is obvious..
Our toes hurt when we outgrow
our shoes. We seem all arms
when a coat suddenly gets too
small. But while our emotional
growth is obvious, it is more
subtle.
The “symptoms” of being a
teen-ager are many. Confusion’
at times may be one of them.
But, only at times. One week
you are simply mad about
strawberry ice cream; the next
week it’s chocolate. One day you
spend your allowance on a pre
sent for your little brother; the
next day you bawl him out for
being a nuisance. One hour you
insist on making all your own
decisions; the next you can’t
even choose a dress without
your mother’s help. This isn’t.
Word of God made Man with
the Holy Church.”
Along with their joy at Easter
the Pone also exoressed the
gratitude of Catholics “to Him
who is the Son of God and of
Marv, by virtue of whose blood
pardon was called down on . . .
the whole world of sinful hu
manity, whose destiny was de
cided and whose redemntion and
salvation was secured for all
time.”
He said that Christ’s suffering
and death was a “glorious com
bat” which still continues on
earth.
“On one side,” he said, “stands
Christ, together with His reo-
resent.atives and His followers in
the Church, raised un in holi
ness and brotherlv love. And
with the Church thus blessed,
there abides sound doctrine,
truth, justice and peace.
“Rallying suDnort on the other
side is the anti-Christian soirit.
which is error, a false idea of
personal and social life, exces
sive power and even physical
violence, evil and ruinous dis
order.”
In such a combat, he con
tinued, it is essential that every
one fnlfiP his obligations. This,
he said, “involves a great sense
of resnonsibility, an exercise of
moral rivht, a shrinking from
compromise, and unqualified
sincerity of intention and action
before both God and men.”
After expressing the Church’s
Easter joy and gratitude, the
Pope turned to the Church’s sor
row.
“Here,” he said, “at noon on
the feast of Easter, while around
us all is an invitation to spirit
ual joy, many — and it is indeed
sorrowful for Us to return to
this point — many of our bre
thren do not enjoy any kind of
control dnd responsibility; in
learning to make decisions and
face reality. While you are
learning anything you some
times feel uncertain and unsure
of yourself; so also, during this
time of learning to be a mature
adult.
Think about it, Sally, and un
derstand it. No matter at what
stage of life we are, we need
God’s grace to heln us. It’s just
as wonderful at 16 as at 60. So
use it. Growing up doesn’t have <
to be confusing. It can be fun.
(Doris Revere Peters answers

freedom, personal, civil or relig
ious.”
He added that sharing in spi
rit and prayer in the sufferings
of persecuted Catholics “brings
benefit to every part of the holy
Church which, from the wonder
ful example of unflinching cour
age which they give, draws in
crease of edification and fervor."
He continued;
“And Our sorrowing gaze
turns also to other children of
God everywhere who are suffer
ing because of race or economic
conditions ... or through limi
tation of the exercise of their
natural and civil rights. At the
same time Our word of heart
felt sympathy longs to pour
forth into the heagts of each one
an expression of human and
Christian solidarity, which on
the day marked by Divine Pro
vidence will come to flower.”
Pope John’s second Easter
message, like his first, ended
with a prayer and his blessing to
the city of Rome and the world.
