Press, Not Public, Inject
Religious Issue Into Primary
Elections, Sen. Kennedy Says

PORTLAND, Ore., (NC) —
U. S. Sen. John F. Kennedy said
here that he felt the press, more
than the public, was responsible
for continuing to raise the so-
called religious issue in the pri
mary campaign.
During his Oregon visit, the
Massachusetts legislator was
asked occasional questions con
cerning his religion affecting
decisions he might make if he
were elected President. One of
them he answered in a local
television broadcast, pointing
out, as he has many times be
fore, that it would not.
It is difficult to measure the

importance the religious ques
tion has to the voters of Oregon,
who will ballot in a May 20
Oregon primary. One veteran
newspaper man who has trav
eled with Sen. Kennedy on vir
tually all his visits to the state
said he does not feel “it is a
burning issue.”
He said that while the ques
tion was brought up at all
points in the state where Sen.
Kennedy spoke and held ques-
tion-and-answer periods, the
“questions seemed to be taper
ing off from the Senator’s Feb
ruary visit.”
Mr. Kennedy told students of
Southern Oregon College at
Ashland he believed “religion
and other side issues should
vanish in the general election”
in November. At that time, he
said, “the real issues” involv
ing Republicans and Democrats
ought to hold the stage.
The Senator told the Catholic
Sentinel, Portland archdiocese
newspaper, he believed the
press, more than the public, was
responsible for injecting the
“religious issue” into the pri
maries.
Kill Protestant
Missioned
Kidnap Priest
ROME, (NC)—Terrorists kill
ed a Protestant missionary in
Bayangam, Cameroon, and kid
naped the African priest who
was in charge of the Catholic
mission there.
The crimes took place on
April 9, it was reported here by
Fides, mission news agency.
Names of the two victims were
not reported.

Duty of Students
To Prepare
For Leadership
NEW YORK, (NC) — The ob
ligation of students to seek
knowledge to meet the demands
of future leadership was stress
ed here by Auxiliary Bishop
James H. Griffiths of New
York.
Bishop Griffiths preached
terrorists, is the fifth priest to
be kidnapped in Cameroon —
the fourth in the Diocese of
Nkongsamba alone — since that
African nation became indepen
dent on January 1.
From July to September last
year, terrorists raided seven
Catholic missions in Cameroon
—then a United Nations trust
territory under French admini
stration—killing a priest and a
catechist. They also wounded
another priest and a Brother.
On November 30, Father Lau
rent Heberle and Valentin
Sarron were murdered and be
headed at the Immaculate Heart
of Mary mission in Bafang. A
month earlier a catechist from
the same mission, Raphael Nit-
cheu, was shot to death.
Many of the Church’s schools
in the Bafnileke region on the
Nigerian border, including the
college at Bafang, were closed
because of terrorism. Catholic
hospitals and dispensaries were
also closed.
The new nation’s government
—headed by a Moslem, Premier
Amadou Ahidjo — has blamed
the violence that has been
plaguing Cameroon on an out
lawed leftist party, the Union
of the Cameroon People. Some
observers have called the party
communist-dominated.
Cameroon is an almost entire
ly agricultural country on Af
rica’s west coast. About the size
of California, it has a popula
tion of 3,238,196, of whom only
about 17,000 are whites. Catho
lics number 607,303, Moslems
total about 625,000 and Protes
tants approximately 350,000.
The rest are animist pagans.
(May 1) at a Solemn High Mass
in St. Patrick’s cathedral, at- ■
tended by more than 500 for
eign and American university
students, who were guests of
the Grail International Student
Center. The center is part of
the worldwide Grail movement,
which trains young women for
the Catholic lay apostolate.
Bishop Griffiths warned that
the expansion and improvement
of now underdeveloped coun
tries depends not only on the
utilization of natural resources
but also on justice and charity.
He told the students that now
is the time for them to realize
that they “have the obligation”
to acquire the knowledge, cul
ture and technical ability which
are indispensable if they are to
meet the demands of their pro
fession and to become useful
members of society.
“This means conscientious
work and a sense of social re-
• sponsibility,” he declared. “It is
a reminder that knowledge
comes not as a gift but as a
conquest. Our times call for
strong men and women capable
of diffusing good all about them
and of leading others in the
light and principles lived and
not merely learned.
“The students of our day
must by word and deed scotch
the legend or put an end to the
age-old tradition that students
are a privileged caste, congeni
tally opposed to the life of labor.
“Those young men and wo
men who have been given the
precious opportunity of pursu
ing studies to prepare for a
career of service and who en
ter on it without the necessary
preparation, fail before God in
their duty not merely towards
themselves but also toward oth
ers for their self-caused inade
quacies and for the dismal fail
ures and catastrophes resulting
therefrom.”
Following the Mass, His Emi
nence Francis Cardinal Spell
man, Archbishop of New York,
who presided, greeted Miss The-
rese Martin, director of the
Grail center, and others.
