the moral way in which Our
Lord’s revelation reaches the
Catholic. We learn it from our
priests, who are obedient to
their bishop and who is in com
munion with the bishops of the
whole Church. But situations
may arise in which it is not
easy to say what the agreed
teaching of the bishop is on this
or that point of doctrine. It may
be that some new problem arises
which has never met Catholics
in that form before, and there
fore has not had Our Lord’s
teaching applied to it. It may be
that some new heresy arises
calling for a more precise state
ment of the denied truth. The
bishops may meet in a General
Council—as at Trent in the six
teenth century and the Vatican
three hundred years later. Then
the questions at issue can be
fully discussed, and the bishops
arrive at the statement of their
agreement.
But there is another organ of
infallible teaching, what we may
think of as a court of last resort.
In the words of the Vatican
Definition of 1870, the Pope, the
successor of Peter “is endowed
with that infallibility with
which it has pleased God to
endow His Church.” If the Pope
issues a solemn definition of the
truth of Revelation, to be ac
cepted by the whole Church,
then that too is certain. We that
hear him, hear Christ.
Infallibility is not the same
thing as Inspiration. In the lat
ter—we find it at work in the
writers of Scripture—the Holy
Ghost may actually put truth
into the mind of the man who
is to utter it. But in Infallibility,
God does not fill the Pope’s
mind with truth by a direct act,
he guards the Pope’s mouth
that there may be no error in
the definition, the utterance of
truth.
A little precision here may
save us a great deal of confusion
later. For the rest of men there
are three possibilities when they
are asked a question—they may
give the right answer, or the
wrong answer, or no answer.
For the Pope (defining in the
conditions already set out) one
of these possibilities vanishes:
God will not let him give the
wrong answer. That is what
Infallibility means. For him
there remain two possibilities—
he may give the right answer
or no answer. Which of these
two he will give depends on
whether he knows. And he ac
quires his knowledge like any
other Catholic—he learns what
the Church has already taught,
studies theology in fact; he con
sults the best theologians avail
able upon the special problem.
Let us say it once more, Infalli
bility does not give him knowl
edge. It is not Inspiration. But
what he does utter comes to us
with God’s guarantee, it con
tains no error.
The exclusion of error is not
due to any human virtue; it is
solely the act of God. Exami
ning it one may feel that God
has done the very minimum;
but the minimum is wholly
sufficient.

Dear Doris:
My mother thinks it’s a crime
for a girl to go dating at the age
of 14. Do you agree with her?
How old do you think a girl
should be before she goes out
dating?
Sharon
Dear Sharon:
There’s no definite age at
which a girl is. suddenly old
enough to date. While it isn’t a
“crime” to date at 14 it isn’t
the general thing, either.
In gerenal, you are old enough
to date when you are ready.
And when is that? You are
ready when you know and are
willing to accept the responsi
bilities along with the fun of
dating. Your mother knows you
pretty well. She knows how
you handle your responsibilities
and how mature you are. It’s
really up to her to decide if you

one or both of the parties (an
evil condemned specifically by
Christ as well as by the law of
nature) is condoned under cer
tain circumstances (infidelity,
etc.).
THESE ARE JUST three ex
amples of how Protestant dogma
smiles upon the vicious princi
ple that a supposed good end
can whitewash totally evil
means. Since they respect grave
matter, however, it follows that
the same principle could be
applied—depending upon the
personal opinions of Protestant
spokesmen—to other issues
equally as serious. After all,
when human beings begin tam
pering with the laws of God
and nature, there, is no telling
where they will end.
Indeed, the constant accusa
tion on the part of some Protes
tant spokesman that Catholics,
and not themselves, espouse the
principle that an alleged good
end can justify immoral means,
may itself be another aspect of
their own espousal of it—their
own end being, of course, to
denigrate the Catholic position.
THE CHURCH'S TEACHING
in this whole matter can be
summed up in a single sentence:
A good end does not make evil
means moral. In the words of
the late Father Edwin Healy:
“There are those who (think
that) God would be narrow and
unreasonable if He considered
it a sin painlessly to chloroform
a newborn infant whose life
could be only a life of pain and
deprivation or to tell a ‘harm
less’ lie in order to save another
from death or' injury. But an
action that is intrinsically evil
is evil under all circumstances.
The end does not justify the
means. God has not told us that
we may commit an action which
is of its nature evil in order that
we may escape inconvenience
or achieve some desirable out
come.”
are ready to date at 14.
I think a girl of 14, if she is
interested, could go on occa
sional group dates. But remem
ber Sharon, I said occasional—
and in groups. This doesn’t
mean the two or three times a
week variety. It means the spe
cial dance, Halloween party
variety. And I said, “if she is
interested” because many girls
even at 16 aren’t yet interested
in dating.
In dating, as in everything
else, you have greater success
if you take it easy and learn the
rules first. Wouldn’t it be bet
ter in your early teens to first
learn how to get along with
boys? Get to know what they
are like, what they talk about
and how they act. You learn
this in groups at school and par
ties. And Sharon, here’s a tip,
learning this right at 14 will
mean you’ll be far more popular
at 18.
MILITARY TRAINING
EXCELLENT
Dear Doris:
I will graduate from high
school in June. I won’t be able
to go to college this year but
I will in a year or two. I’m un
decided as to whether I should
go into the service now or get
a job and go to college in two
years. What would you suggest?
Rich
Dear Rich:
I suggest two things. First,
investigate civilian job oppor
tunities. Secondly, thoroughly
look into all the military possi
bilities.
The school’s guidance coun
selor or your teacher will be
happy to discuss civilian jobs
with you. The counselor can
probably send you on interviews
for first hand information. A
good job now might influence
your entire life.
If you are convinced that a
civilian job is just a stop gap
to save money for college, a
stint in one of the services will
do the same thing. And offer
other advantages. Each branch
of the military offers excellent
training in many different
fields. By enlisting now, in the
one of your choice, you will
fulfill your obligation to your
country and at the same time
get an education which may
prepare you for a good job
later on.
And Rich, don’t act on the ad
vice of the bull session quarter
back. Get the official word first
hand. Make a schedule and visit
the recruiting office of each
military service. They are open
to serve you by answering all
your questions. If you can’t go
to each one write for the pam
phlet explaining its program.
All may be addressed at Wash
ington 25, D. C.
This will keep you busy until
graduation. But not too busy to
keep you from seeking God’s
help. Pray for his guidance.

Auxiliary Bishop Fulton J.
Sheen of New York will repre
sent Patriarch Maximos IV
Saigh of Antioch at the Melkite
Rite convention to be held here,
June 24 through 26.
The Bishop was selected by
the Sacred Congregation for the
Oriental Church in Rome.
Acting as personal delegate
of the spiritual leader of the
world’s Melkite Rite Catholics,
he will preside at the conven
tion, expected to attract 5,000
persons.
Sponsored by the Melkite
Laymen’s Association of North
America, which represents 14,-
000 Melkite Rite Catholics, the
convention’s purposes are to en
hance the spiritual and cultural
life of Melkite Catholics and to
bring about better understand
ing of the Melkite and other
Eastern rites.
St. George Melkite church
will be host to the convention,
like to go. Although I have a
date the problem is about the
tickets. I don’t know if I should
get the tickets and pay for them
or should I let my boy friend
pay for them? It would be em
barrassing to ask him and I
really can afford to pay for
them myself. Please advise me
what to do.
Ronnie
Dear Ronnie:
When a girl’s school is having
a dance the girls invite the boys
and pay for the tickets. This is
the accepted thing.
The boy usually brings you a
corsage and provides the trans
portation, unless your father or
older brother is driving you.
Sometimes the boy offers to
pay for the tickets. Since you
can afford it, spare yourself the
embarrassment, and pay for
them. If you check with the
other girls in your class I’m
sure they are doing the same.
So forget about it and have a
good time.
