priest, graduate student and
professor. At present he divides
his year between lecturing in
the Lateran’s Pontifical Athen-
eum of Both Laws and duties
in his home diocese, where he
was formerly Officialis of the
diocese and a professor in St.
John’s Seminary.
A graduate of Georgetown
University, Father Lafferty be
came a member of the bar of
the Supreme Court of the Unit
ed States and practiced law for
seven years in Little Rock, Ar
kansas, before answering the
call to the priesthood. He closed
his law offices and went to
Rome, where he lived for six
months as a layman before en
tering upon his seminary studies
in that city. He was ordained
there in 1935 and received his
degree in theology from the
Gregorian University.
After two years of teaching
back home, he returned to Rome
for graduate studies in canon
law at the Atheneum, in which
he now holds a professor’s chair
and from which he received the
treasured degree of Doctor of
Both Laws, (canon and civil.)
Father Lafferty’s Roman ca
reer was once more interrupted
by World War 11, which brought
him bajck to this country for
several years of teaching and
other duties. Thus has the pat
tern of Father Lafferty’s life
for the past twenty-two years
been woven by a shuttle cross
ing and returning between
Rome and America. His partici
pation in the life of two coun
tries makes him an ideal inter
preter of one to the other.
Father Lafferty told interest
ing anecdotes of the many
popes, particularly of the late
Pope Pius XII and the present
Holy Father, Pohn John XXIII.
The speaker told of the parti
cular interest of both of these
popes in young men in the arm
ed- forces.. Father Lafferty told
the gathering that the corona
tion of a pope is one of the
most beautiful and elaborate
ceremonies of the Church. He
stated that years of devotion to
the Holy See is personified by
the simplicity of His Holiness
Pope John XXIII.
