Pope John Appeals For Prayer ROME (Radio, NC)—The In- ternatinola Conference of Catho lic Charities has appealed to all its affiliated national relief or ganizations to help victims of Chile’s cataclysmic onslaught of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, avalanches and tidal waves. It instructed all national or ganizations to send aid directly to the competent agencies in Chile itself, in view of the great distances and the urgency in volved. While the conference sped its appeal from its headquarters here, His Holiness Pope John XXIII called for prayers for victims of the disaster. The Pontiff’s appeal for pray ers came at the end of conclud ing exercises of May devotions in the Vatican. When the devo tions were finished Pope John addressed the prelates and Vatican officials present and recommended to their prayers certain intentions of his own. In addition to prayers for Chile, the Pope asked prayers for the effective preparation for the coming Ecumenical Council and its successful outcome. News Service) DENVER — Solemn Requiem Mass for Msgr. Matthew J. W. Smith, 69, who became a Catho lic press legend during bis life time, was offered (June 20) in Immaculate Conception cathe dral here. The editor-in-chief of the Register, national Catholic newspaper and its chain of pa pers, died here (June 15) follow ing an operation for a ruptur ed intestine. The soft-spoken Monsignor, who was two-fisted in his- edi- t o r i a 1 s and commentaries, founded the Register system of newspapers, which today has editions in 33 archdioceses and dioceses. Msgr. ’ Smith was born June 9, 1891 in Altoona, Pa., one of six children in the family of Edward F. and Annie Feeney Smith. After his Catholic schooling, he got “printer’s ink in his blood” by working for four years on the Altoona Daily Tribune. In 1913, while a student for the priesthood at St. Thomas’ Seminary, Denver, Matthew was named editor of the Denver Catholic Register, then private ly owned. He and a business manager were the staff. The equipment included two batter ed desks and an old typewriter. The young editor built the Register into one of the most complete newspaper plants in the country. It has a staff of some 150 persons. There were 2,800 subscribers to the Regis ter in 1913. Today the Register papers have about 800,000 sub scribers. W. O.
