YOUTH
PROVE MATURITY — THEN
ASK FOR PRIVILEGE
THE BULLETIN, June 25, I960—PAGE 5
Theology for
The Layman
(Continued from Page 4)
We may indeed think of Ac
tual Graces—observe that we
never speak of Sanctifying
Graces but only Grace—as sud
den gusts of wind of the Spirit.
To them applies very strongly
what Our Lord said to Nico-
demus (John III.8): “The Spirit
breathes where he will: and you
hear his voice, but you know
not whence he comes and whith
er he goes.” Without this thrust
of the divine energy, the soul
could not take the first step in
its sanctification. With it, the
soul is capable of movements
\ otherwise beyond it. If it re
' sponds and makes them—if
above all it makes a movement
of love towards God—then it
will receive Sanctifying Grace.
1 If the soul responds, notice; for
it is Supernatural Impulsion,
not Compulsion.
Actual Graces do not cease
when the soul receives Sancti
fying Grace. God continues to
send them to enable us in this
or that matter to see what is the
best thing for us to do and to
make the effort, if we happen
to be reluctant, to do it. Reluc
tance, unfortunately, calls for
no explanation; all of us have
known it; with some of us, upon
some points, it is practically a
habit. But the seeing what is
-- best to do—that should be look
's* ed at closely. Why do not the
virtues of Faith and Prudence
give us all the guidance we can
need? We saw in the previous
I article how Prudence is a neces
sary supplement to Faith. How
are Actual Graces a necessary
supplement to Prudence?
The deepest reason lies in
this, that each man lives his
g| own life and no two lives are
|| alike. Each life has its own spe
cial conditions, difficulties, prob-
!§ lems, choices to be made. Each
man his own natural tendencies,
g§ appetites, strengths and weak-
|| nesses, likes and dislikes, temp
tations. Even similar situations
can look and feel totally dif-
|| ferent to different people. We
|| are constantly having to make
decisions in matters where no
II one else’s experience helps us,
|| where the general rules of
llfi morality and even common
sense do not seem to apply very
clearly.
It is true that if, enlightened
by Faith and Prudence, we
studied the revelation of God as
given to us by His Church, we
could given sufficient time ar
rive at the best solution of any
problem that confronts us. We
should, of course, be constantly
led astray by all the reasons for
choosing the course that we our
selves liked best, which our
own mind invents so rapidly
and such fertility. Nonetheless,
in theory anyhow, we could get
the right answer—.ultimately,
the trouble is there are so many
decisions that have to be made
here and now; the possibility of
reaching a right decision a few
months hence does not fit the
way life has to be lived.
Actual Grace gives the instant
aid we need for our own wholly
particular and personal prob
lems. By it God is guiding not
the whole human race, but you,

BOX
(Continued from Page 4)
it follows that exceptions can
be made by Church authority.
But from the seriousness of the
reasons for which the law was
initiated, it also follows that ex
ceptions are not likely to be
made, save in proportionately
grave circumstances and in par
ticular cases.
The first example of such a
dispensation in modern times
was that given by the Holy See
about nine years ago to Father
Rudolph Goethe (a descendant
of the great German poet). A
former Lutheran pastor, Father
Goethe entered the Church in
1949, shortly after his wife be
came a Catholic. On December
22, 1951, he was ordained by
Bishop Albert Stohr at Mainz.
No restriction of any kind was
placed upon his marriage,
which was fully recognized as
sacramental.
Stressing the extraordinary
nature of the permission given
to Father Goethe, a theologian
of the Mainz diocese issued the
following explanation:
“Former protestant ministers
who made a sacrifice to become
Catholics with their families
certainly are enabled in a spe
cial way to serve in prayer and
work the great task of the re-
Dear Doris:
I’m 16 and a sophomore in
high school. My father objects
vigorously - to my viewing the
late show on TV. He believes I
should be in bed by 11 o’clock
even on Friday nights. What do
you think?
Frank P.
REST IMPORTANT
Dear Frank:
Your father knows you. He
knows how much Test you need,
how much time you spend
viewing television, and your
grades in school. If you are one
of those TV addicts who can’t
bear to drag himself away from
the screen you may be neglect
ing your home work.
As far as rest is concerned
we are told we need between
eight and ten hours sleep a
night — particularly young
people who are still growing.
Some can do with less while
bthers need more. All this may
have a bearing on your father’s
objections.
union of all Christians. Once
ordained as priests, they will be
particularly valuable collabora
tors for the realization of this
great hope of the whole Church.
However, severance of the ties
entered into with their wives in
the Holy Sacrament of matri
mony could hardly be expected.
“For this reason, in individual
cases ... the Holy Father has
decided ... to permit, after
careful examination, the ordi
nation to the Catholic priest
hood of a former Protestant
minister who has become a con
vert and at the same time to
permit the continuation of the
marriage validly entered into
prior to the conversion to the
Catholic Church.”
Father Goethe’s ordination in
Mainz was especially signifi
cant. For it was in the diocese
of Mainz that the monk Tetzel
began to preach indulgences on
the German scene. It was Tet-
zel’s approach to the subject
that occasioned violent criticism
on the part of another monk
who had long been brooding
over several theological mat
ters.. His name was Martin Lu
ther. From his defection, Lu
theranism, and subsequently
Protestantism was born. And
with Protestantism, of coursd,
came the divisions in Christi
anity.
The 11:00 o’clock curfew on
Friday night is a little stiff. But
not if you are up late every oth
er night in the week. If you
want your father to grant you
privileges show him you are
man enough to accept his de
cisions. Abide by them during
the week. Ask for a later cur
few only on Friday when you
have something special to do
or just for the late show.
SAUCY FRECKLES
Dear Doris:
I hate freckles. But each
summer it seems I get more. We
are going to the beach again
this summer. Is there anything
I can do about freckles?
Jean
Dear Jean:
I can tell you how to camou
flage your freckles, but I hate
to. A sprinkling of those imper
tinent dots across your nose is
saucy and attractive. But if you
don’t want to look saucy, here
goes.
Use a powder base a shade
darker than usual. Then pat on
powder also a shade darker.
Powder bases are for older com
plexions and tend to dry the
skin — so use sparingly.
The sure fire way is to be
careful about the sun. Since
you’re going to the beach by ail
means buy an “anti freckle hat”
or sunshade. These new styles
are inexpensive and gay. Some
are like mandarins or poke
bonnets. Others are of the pine
apple sundae variety. All gua
rantee to make you the belle
of the beach.
So save your pennies and in
vest in a new straw beach hat.
And Jean, it will do more than
keep freckles off your nose. It
will also keep the sun from
bleaching and drying out your
hair.
ASK GREATEST TEACHER
Dear Doris:
I’m a high school senior. I’m
going to college next year and
I’m interested in teaching. My
parents approve of my choice
but I have a different problem.
I love little children as well as
history and teen-agers and their
problems. I’m confused now as
to what kind of teaching to go
in for. How can I solve this?
Marge
Dear Marge:
Relax. There’s no need to be
confused. You’ll have time in
college to choose between ele
mentary and secondary educa
tion. In the meantime investi
gate the possibilities of both.
Talk to your teachers—and
read. There’s plenty of material
available in the library about
the profession of teaching.
Each level has its advantages.
To some the elementary grades
offer a challenge because of tiie
influence in shaping the mind
of the young child. They get
along well with the younger
children and they like the va
riety of the teaching program.
Others feel that teaching a fav
orite subject such as math, his
tory or English is more stimu
lating.
After a few years the grade
school teacher may decide to
get her masters degree in ad
ministration. The high school
teacher may decide to do far
ther study in her special field
to qualify as a college instruc
tor.
The decision has to be yours,
Marge. But it doesn’t have to
be made now. In college you re
ceive educational guidance from
instructors, class advisors and
the dean. You get ideas from,
the courses you take and from
feiiow students.
And don’t forget to consult,
the greatest of all teachers for
His guidance. Ask our Lord
Who has given you the spark
for this worthy vocation to help
you make a decision.
