GEORGIA GLENDALE 7-2577 Cuban Prelate Denounces Thought Control, Unjust Confiscation Of Property, Hatred Of Other Nations HAVANA, (NC) —- A Cuban prelate has denounced thought control by the state, unjust con fiscation of property and na tionalism based on hatred for other nations. The speech delivered by Aux iliary _Bishop .Eduardo Boza Masvidal of Havana, however, did not mention by name the government of Premier Fidel Castro. It was delivered in the pre sence of Archbishop Enrique Perez Serantes of Santiago, who recently warned that commu nists have infiltrated Cuba’s government. Archbishop Perez Serantes, who received an honorary de gree at a commencement exer cise at Villanueva University, also gave a sneech urging stu dents to “unite to defend the university should it be in dan ger.” Bishop Boza Masvidal, who is director of the universitv. de clared that the state should not “imnose a single way of think ing from which no one can de viate. nor should it control all means of exnression.” Fe said that although the state has the right to exnropri- ate land left unproductive by big landowners, the owners must be Dat'd the real value of the land taken from them. Confiscation of land without navmont is "nothinq less than robberv," be asserted, unless the owner has acquired it il- leoallv or committed a crime for which the confiscation is jurt rmnishment. P.ishnn Boza Masvidal also said that “it is anti-Christian and criminal to stir up hatred and class struggle. He added that vilification is un-Christian. “No one should believe that onlv he is good and that none pvoent himself has accomnlish- ed anvtbing good,” he said. The Bishon noted that Cath olic doctrine is onposed to the exploitation of one nation by another. “No country that has reached sufficient maturity to govern itself should be dominat ed economically or politically by another,” he said. He sketched the Christian idea of the functions of the state, and said that “the state should supply what cannot be done by individuals. It should promote and protect private ini tiative rather than engulf it.” Archbishop Perez Serantes, who received an honorary doc torate in law, said in his address that he hoped all nations would shed hatred and “the harsh yoke of secularism.” He said Christians feel secure in the bark of Peter “though the sea of passions is agitated and the tempest grows ever more threatening.” The 75-year-old prelate de clared: “In these times of disquiet and anxiety, of confusion, hat red, and unrestrained cupidity, all eyes turn to the hill of the Vatican where we see the pilot, (His Holiness) Pope John XXIII, mysteriously placed there by God, as a shining beacon, as a supreme moral authority in the world, disposed to guide and lift all of mankind to the placid shores of Christ's peace." Gaston County Now In Raleigh Diocese JURISDICTION OF BELMONT ABBOTS OVER CATHOLICS OUTSIBE ABBEY ENBS (N.C.W.C. News Service) BELMONT, N. C. — A sim ple ceremony here ended the jurisdiction the heads of Bel mont Benedictine Abbey have exercised for 50 years over Catholics living outside abbey grounds. The sniritual authority of the abbot nullus, who is the only one in the United States, is now confined to the 790 acres of ab bey grounds, according to a de cree from the Sacred Consistor- ial Congregation. Since 1944. the abbot nullius has had sniritual jurisdiction over onlv the Catholics in Gas ton county, now numbering 1.309. But the countv’s Catho lics first came under his control in 1910 when the abbev nul lius was officially established. At that time, the abbey’s of ficial iurisdiction included eight counties, though the abbot. Rt. Rev. Leo Haid. was also Vicar Anostolib of the Vicariate of North Carolina. Thus he gov erned Catholics in all of North Carolina. During his time in of fice, the Catholic population of the area rose more than 8,000. The other seven counties became part of the Raleigh diocese. Transfer of Gaston county to Raleigh was ordered by the Sacred Consistorial Congrega tion in a decree signed by His Eminence Marcello Cardinal Mimmi, the congregation’s sec retary. According to the decree, the transfer was ordered in view of the special vocation of Benedic tines to focus on inner life and on the education of vouth, two goals more easily attained with out the burdens of parish ad ministration. Present at the ceremonv here (June 28) where the transfer de cree was executed were Bishon Waters, Abbot Nullius Walter A. Coegin, O.S.B., and Msgr. Gerolamo Prigione, a member of the staff of the Apostolic Delegation, Washington, D. C„ who represented the Holv See. Abbot Coggin will continue to hold the title and privileges of abbot nullius, according to the Holv See’s decree. He will have jurisdiction over his abbev, Belmont Abbev College and any Catholic families living on the abbey farms, though none do now.
