Threatens Intervention
(Continued from Page 1)
Prior to independence the
Bishops of the Congo iwice
spoke out in pastoral letters in
favor of independence and ex
pressed the hope that the tran
sition from colonial rule could
be made without violence.
At the same time Church
leaders expressed doubts about
the future.
His Eminence Josef Cardinal
van Roey, Archbishop of Ma-
lines, Belgium, warned in a pas
toral issued in June that the
Congo could not achieve true
independence without a strong
moral and religious education.
Father Joseph Vande Walle,
C.I.C.M., who spent 18 years in
the Congo missions, warned of
the threat of bloody intertribal
warfare and said that it may
seriously effect the work of
Congolese priests.
Citing the fighting that had
taken place between the Lulua
and Baiuba tribes, he said that
the deep-seated loyalties of na
tive priests to their tribes would
put them in an untenable posi
tion if real civil war breaks out.
He pointed ‘out that Catholic
members of the Lulua tribe are
hostile to Baiuba priests. Some
Luiuas, he added, do not dare
receive Holy Communion from
Baiuba priests for fear they will
be poisoned later by their own
tribesmen.
Racial bias was shown before
independence by extreme na
tionalists who demanded the
expulsion of white missionaries.
In May a mob of Congolese
nationalists smashed a statue of
Patronize
Our
Our Lady in a church they had
forcibly entered in Kadutu, ac
cused the priest there of med
dling in politics and warned
that foreign priests would not
be welcome in the Congo after
independence. The priest had
been urging parishioners to
vote for good leaders in elec
tions preparatory to independ
ence.
In January, Auxiliary Bishop
Joseph Malula of Leopoldville, a
native Congolese, warned that
independence would be a "na
tional catastrophe" unless the
people accept the "universal
charity which Christ has come
to place in us." He stated:
"On the one hand, all Congo
lese are looking to the future
with the hope of becoming free
men who will on their own car
ry out the business of their
country. On the other hand, at
the very dawn of that independ
ence, the cruel reality of dis
tressing spectacles is spreading
itself before our eyes. Arson,
ruin and mourning are spread
ing panic, fear, mistrust and in
security all over. Our Congo
lese society is poisoned by ra
cial hatred, tribal division and
fratricidal battles,"
Communists are taking ad
vantage of the situation de
scribed by Bishop Malula. Last
December, Fides, mission news
agency, reported that Red pro
paganda spread on others from
Moscow is “undeniably threat
ening to ruin the confidence of
a part of Congolese public opin
ion with regard to the Church.”
Even some Catholics, it said, are
being influenced.
Father Adhemar De P a u w,
O.F.M., a representative of the
Belgian government at the
United Nations, has charged
that communist saboteurs were
responsible for the destruction
of Catholic churches, schools
and information centers in last
Bishops’ Release
Coes Not Mean
Church Is Free
VATICAN CITY, (NC) — The
reported release of bishops and
priests from jail by communists
in Czechoslovakia does not
mean the Church is no longer
persecuted there, L’Osservatore
Romano said here.
The Vatican City daily was
commenting on the reported lib
eration of 29,000 political pris
oners in Red-ruled Czechoslo
vakia, including some bishops,
priests and Religious.
Among those released, ac
cording lo reports, are Bishop
Josef Hlouch of Budejovice,
Bishop Stepan Trochia of Lito-
merice, Bishop Peter Gojdic of
Presov, Auxiliary Bishop Stan
islav Zela of Olomouc, Auxili
ary Bishop Stefan Barnes of
Spis and Auxiliary Bishop Vasil
Hopko of Presov.
"Nothing is said of Archbish
op (Josef) Beran of Prague,
who has been long kept from
his diocese because of his firm
ness," L'Osservatore said.
The paper noted that the re
ports of an amnesty have so far
come from unofficial sources. At
the same time, it pointed out,
“as in the past the bishops lib
erated from jail are forbidden to
return to their dioceses to re
sume government of them and
they may not exerciise their
functions as ecclesiastics or as
priests.”
“If with liberation the person
al conditions of a few prelates
improve,” L’Osservatore stated,
“the'Church remains oppressed
and under the arbitrary rule of
the communist bureaucracy,
while the new constitution de
mands that the state intensify
its battle for the ‘liberation of
minds’ from the remainders of
an ‘exploiting society’.”

year’s rioting here. He said the
saboteurs were trained at Sta
lingrad in the Soviet Union.
The growth of native sects is
another factor making the
Church’s future here uncertain.
Chief of these is the political
religious sect known as Kiban-
gism, which was described last
year in a statement issued by
the Apostolic Delegation as the
“worst enemy of Christ and
His universal Gospel in the
Congo.”
The statement warned Congo
lese Catholics “that no ties, not
even those of mere courtesy,
exist beween the representa
tives of the Holy Father and
this . . . sect.”

Weekly Calendar
Of Feast Days
(N.C.W.C. News Service)
SUNDAY, July 24 — The
Seventh Sunday after Pente
cost. Generally this date is ob
served as the feast of St. Chris
tina, Virgin-Martyr. The dates
of her lifetime are unknown,
but she is said to have been a
Roman who was converted to
Christianity. She destroyed
some golden idols which belong
ed to her father, a pagan mag
istrate. For her action she en
dured tortures, and at length
was put to death on an island
in the lake of Bolsena.
MONDAY, July 25 — St.
James the Greater, Apostle. He
was the son of Zebedee and Sa
lome and the brother of St.
John the Evangelist. He was one
of three chosen to be familiar
companions of Our Saviour.
When he was brought before
King Herod Agrippa and ac
cused as a Christian, his fear
less confession so moved the
public prosecutor that he de
clared himself a Christian on
the spot. Both accused and ac
cuser were put to death for the
Faith.
TUESDAY, July 26 — St.
Anne, the mother of the Blessed
Virgin Mary. She was far ad
vanced in age when Mary was
born. She was the spouse of St.
Joachim.
WEDNESDAY, July 27 — St.
Pataleon, Martyr. He was a phy
sician and with St. Luke is pa
tron of medical men. It is said
that early in his life he was led
into apostasy, but later re-em
braced the Faith. It is certain
that he suffered martyrdom at
the imperial residence of Nico-
demia between 303 and 305.
THURSDAY, July 28 — SS.
Nazarius, Celsus and Victor,
Martyrs. St. Nazarius, who liv
ed in the first century, was the
son of a pagan Roman army of
ficer and embraced the Chris
tian faith of his mother, Per-
petua. ^ With St. Celsus, his
youthful companion, he was be
headed under Nero at Milan. St.
Victor, an African, succeeded
St. Eleutherius as Pope in 189
and ruled until 199.
FRIDAY, July 29 — St. Mar
tha of Bethany, Virgin. She was
the sister of St. Mary Magda
lene and St. Lazarus. They en
tertained Our Lord in their
home. She is said to have at
tended Christ in His Passion
and rejoiced with Him after the
Resurrection. It is said that
with her brother and sister she
went to Marseilles and aided
in the introduction of Christi
anity in France.
SATURDAY, July 30 — SS.
Abdon and Sennen, Martyrs.
They were Persian nobles who
lived in the third century and
were brought to Rome as cap
tives of Decius. They devoted
themselves to the service of
Christians and to reverent bu
rial of martyrs. When Decius
became emperor, they were
scourged with lead-tipped
whips, subjected to other tor
tures, and finally thrown to
wild beasts in the amphitheater.

Blessed Sacrament on the feast
of Corpus Christi; a Baptism
which all attended on Friday,
June 17; presentation of awards
open house, display of the chil
dren’s work, Holy Mass and
Benediction of the Most Blessed
Sacrament on closing day, June
24, which was also the feast of
the Sacred Heart.
The lay catechists who help
ed with the religious instruc
tion of the children were Miss
es Cecile McKenna, Julie Ann
Wallace, Patricia Sheridan,
Michael Yaeger, Beth McLaugh
lin and Cecilia Smaha. These
young ladies were among a
group of 28 who received cer
tificates after having completed
a thirty hour course of instruc
tion in the Confraternity of
Christian Doctrine given by
Sister Mary Dorothea, R.S.M., at
Mount de Sales Academy dur

Not A Success
BALTIMORE (NC) — An In
dian archbishop has stated here
that the Indian government’s
birth control offensive has met
with little success.
“The government is making
propaganda that birth control
be accepted because it (the gov
ernment) is worried about pop
ulation,” Archbishop Matthew
Kavukatt of Changanacherry,
India, said. He expressed his
views in an interview at Mount
St. Agnes College in Baltimore.
“In some places the people
have taken to it,” the prelate
noted, but he pointed out that,
by and large, “I don’t think
there is a favorable reaction.”
