As a novice, professed monk, and ab bot, Gerard McGinley wrote let ters to his family about the joys and trials he encouraged in the school of Jesus where he studied humility and love. The letters, written over a period of more than 25 years, cover indirectly the progress of his spiritual life from 1926 when he first entered the Abbey of Gethsemani, in Kentucky, to the time of his death in 1955, not long after he became abbot of the Trappist foundation at Pif- fard, New York. These letters were edited by members of his own family. Nowak, 7f-year-old organist and choir-master at Queen of Peace Church, Buffalo, N. Y., sits at his familiar post as he completes 58 years as an oi’ganist for many Catholic churches. Then follows a meditation rich with the inexhaustible fullness of early Christian piety, ad dressing Christ with a wonder ful variety of titles, and yet re lating the lessons and resolves of the meditation to the present struggles of contemporary man. The close of each chapter is made up, fittingly, of petitions. But these are not the petitions of a person praying alone; they are the petitions of the com munity that follows Christ, praying in and with the Church. With her, the reader prays for all mankind; with her, the read er prays for and awaits the coming of God’s kingdom. The other book, The Mission of the Church, fills a gap in the literature on missiology. Al most nothing has been previ ously published in English on this subject except rather deep and generalized theological works. This book brings the thought of such theologians down to a definite set of prin ciples, with suggestions for their translation into practice, includ ing references to particular and concrete situations. The book is also relevant to the Church’s missionary situation almost ev erywhere in the world, embrac ing for instance the tensions which must exist between the Church and the world of poli tics. It is a short book and should be widely welcomed by students, lay and clerical, es pecially by those who are in terested in missionary work of all sorts — including the home missions. Alfred Duggan, known for his fictionized biography of St. Thomas a Becket, My Life for My Sheep, here presents anoth er historical novel, this time telling the story of St. Edward the Confessor, King of the Eng lish and founder of Westmini ster Abbey, who chose to live a life of perpetual continence in marriage rather than to con tinue his dynasty. By so doing, King Edward paved the way for the Norman Conquest of Eng land in the 11th century. Mr. Duggan attributes to Ed ward the belief that, after his death, the English people would profit by Norman rule. Unable to control the warring earls who fought for power within Eng land, and always fearful of in vasion from Denmark, Edward turned to the French and Duke William of Normandy to settle the battle for the throne and to force a united England into the wider culture and market of Europe. Narrated by the royal cham berlain, the story pictures the quiet strength of this pious king who never personally engaged in war and who, together with his wife, took a vow of conti nence to which they remained loyal. Although known as a saint who favored with divine visions and who performed mir.acles, Edward has been too little known. With this novel, which covers Edward’s entire reign until his death not long before the fateful Battle of Hastings in 1066, Mr. Duggan provides a key to the understanding of this enigmatic king, as he brings an entire remote age to life. ... DR. 3-4424 THE BULLETIN, August 6, 1960—PAGE 3 POP E JOHN GOES TO SUMMER HOME AT CASTELGANDOLFO (By Msgr. James I. Tucek) (Radio, N.C.W.C. News Service) CASTELGANDOLFO, Italy— For the second time in his reign His Holiness Pope John XXIII has come to his summer resi dence at this mountain village, where the mayor led the citi zens in a rousing welcome. A moment after his arrival, Pope John appeared at a win dow of his summer quarters to bless people gathered in the square to greet him. Over the door of the main entrance those in the square could read a Latin inscription summarizing the reasons for the Pope’s coming: “For restoration of spirit and body during a brief sojourn with the healthful and beautiful sun and sky.” But the summer sojourn was not expected to be all rest for the Pope. He had already de clared his intention of granting two public audiences weekly. Pie would also continue his vital role in the administration of the Church, and church leaders would call on him for their reg ularly scheduled conferences. There was reason to expect also that Pope John would con tinue the practice he instituted last year of making visits to nearby places. Last year he left the summer residence seven times to attend religious func tions in neighboring villages. Pope, John told the crowds who had gathered in the square before his residence that he hoped to get a little rest, but that he still considered himself bound to his duty of being use ful to men. Pie said he must still speak of the Lord and con cern himself with the needs of true story that is as interesting as a novel. The obstacles the Sisters en countered during the early days were so difficult to over come that less courageous souls would never have persevered. They were, in fact, urged sev eral times to disband. The ef forts of Father Rehrl and the first few Sisters have been am ply rewarded, for today the Sis ters of St. Agnes number in the hundreds. They staff schools, hospitals and missions in nine of the United States and in Central America. Sister Mary Vera Naber has spent more than fifty years as a Sister of St. Agnes and is well qualified to write the his tory of her Order. She is now community supervisor of the schools staffed by the Sisters of St. Agnes in New York and Pennsylvania. This book would be of special interest to any young girl who is considering entering the re ligious life. “We Don’t Overcharge” CHAMBLEE LAWN MOWER SERVICE Parts and Repairing For All Leading Makes — Karts Serviced and Repaired Clinton — Briggs * Stratton, Etc. 4872 Buford Hwy. The Pope revealed his inten tion of celebrating Mass in the Church of St. Thomas of Vil lanueva in the village of Castel- gandolfo “on one of the coming feastdays.” This year there would be an added attraction at Castelgan- dolfo. Rowing competitions of the Olympic Games were sched uled to take place on Lake Al- bano, just below the summer residence. From his apartment windows overlooking the lake, Pope John would have a ring side seat. Pope John is the 22nd pope to take up residence at Castel gandolfo in the almost four centuries that it has been papal property. It was ceded to the popes in 1596 by the Savelli family, and afterwards was combined with the grounds of three adjoining villas. The present papal residence stands on the foundations of what was once the villa of the Roman emperor Domition. There remains a covered porch used by the emperor for his walks during bad Weather. After seizure of the Papal States, Castelgandolfo went into disuse. It was not again occupied by a pope during the summer until after the signing of the Lateran Treaty in 1929. At this time the main building and the gardens were complete ly renovated under the direc tion of Emilio Bonomelli, who has since remained to maintain them. His title is Director of the Pontifical Villas. A major addition to the villa was made in 1959 with the com pletion of a general audience hall to accommodate 8,000 peo ple.
