East Germany Calls Munich
Congress ‘Unholy Alliance’
Hf,
MUNICH, Germany — The
Red regime of East Germany
has attacked the International
Eucharistic Congress as an "un
holy alliance" against commu
nism.
Hundreds of thousands of
people representing every con
tinent and race are attending the
congress, meeting in this his
toric capital of Bavaria from
July 31 to August 7.
It is known that East German
officials have been instructed to
deny exit permits to all wishing
to lake part in it. It also is be
lieved that officials of other
communist nations have receiv
ed the same instructions.
The official daily newspaper
of East Germany’s Communist
party has branded the congress
a base device to “forment hat
red and revenge.” His Eminence
Joseph Cardinal Wendel, Arch
bishop of Munich, has described
the congress as a symbol of “a
world hungry for unity.”

YOUTH
ILL AT EASE? YOU SUFFER
FROM "GROWING PAINS"
Producer-director John Wayne and his cast listen reverently as Father Peter V. Rogers,
O.M.I., of St. Mary’s Church, San Antonio invokes Benediction upon them as they are
about to begin production of Wayne’s ?12,000,000 Todd-AO film of "The Alamo,” on loca
tion in Brackettville, Texas. Wayne also stars with Richard Widmark and Laurence Har
vey in the United Artists release. (NG Photos)
help you gain self-confidence.
Don’t be afraid of making
mistakes. Everyone makes mis
takes — young and old. Adults
learn from the mistakes they
make. You can too.
Are you comparing yourself
unfavorably with others? Hav
ing a few traits you don’t like
is pretty universal among teen
agers.
God gives everyone special
talents. Concentrate on yours.
You may be overlooking them
because they are different.
Maybe you can’t dance or
play tennis. But you can swim;
and well enough to teach oth
ers. Or you may be a super
mechanic who can repair a
clock in a jiffy. Accept your
self as God made you and you
will gain self-confidence.
Much of the uncertainty you
now experience is inevitable in
growing up. But it will disap
pear in time. So forget the psy
chiatrist, Frank. Discuss your
problem with those who know
and love you. Discuss it sin
cerely and completely with
your father and parish priest.
They have passed through
their teens quite successfully.
Dear Doris:
I constantly think people
don’t like me and that they are
looking at me. I feel inferior in
contrast to others. I cannot feel
at ease with people. In other
words I lack self-confidence.
Should I consult a psychiatrist?
Frank N.
Dear Frank:
Lack of self-confidence is a
common complaint of teen
agers. You might call your feel
ings "growing pains.” Instead
of letting it get you down try
to understand the causes. You
are maturing — growing up.
In this process many changes
take place. Your body, physical
characteristics, ideas and atti
tudes all change. These changes
prepare you for adult life.
Since many boys don’t under
stand what’s happening they
become confused and sometimes
frightened. They think they are
different from others. When
faced with new situations they
are unsure of themselves and
afraid of making mistakes.
Some become more conscious of
their faults than of their assets.
First of all we are different.
Some are tall, some short; some
light, some dark. But this we
all have in common — we are
all created in the image and
likeness of God. Concentrate on
this, Frank. It will help you ac
cept yourself as you are; it will

TRUJILIO REGIME POSES AS
FRIEND OF CATHOLIC CHURCH
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti,
(NC)—The regime of the neigh
boring Dominican Republic is
trying to gain popular support
by representing itself as a pillar
of piefy, according lo reports
reaching here.
The controlled press and tele
vision network give widest pub
licity to every visit to a Cath
olic church of Generalisimo Re-
fael Trujillo, strongman of the
Dominican Republic. The Gen
eralisimo embraces the parish .
clergy in front of photographers
and television cameras, serves
as godfather for large groups of
children, and hands out gener
ous gifts of money to their par
ents.
Yet the government press has
not hailed its attacks upon the
clergy, the reports state. The
scores of priests expelled from
the country have not been
brought back. Nor has the gov
ernment repudiated the accusa
tion of the Minister of Justice,
Mario Abreu Penzo, that the
Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop
Lino Zanini, is an "international
provacateur" and should be ex
pelled from the country.
In its attempt to appear a
friend of Catholicism, the gov
ernment pressures parish priests
throughout the country to in
vite Generalisimo Trujillo to
church services. The provincial
governor, the mayor and lesser
functionaries present themselves
again and again at rectories.
They point out that failure by a
parish priest to invite the Gen
eralisimo will be taken as hos
tility to the government. Such
hostility will have grave con
sequences, they say.

WHEN TO WEAR SHORTS
Dear Doris:
The last week of school we
spent our spare time discussing
vacations, what to wear, etc. As
usual the subject of shorts came
up. Our teacher said she thought
shorts were not right for town.
Still a lot of the girls wear
them. What do you think?
Maureen
Dear Maureen:
Your teacher gave you some
sound advice. It’s not consider
ed proper — or in good taste —
to wear shorts in a big city. (I
assume by shorts you mean
bermudas). Of course you will
find some girls who do. And
because of these few some cities
have passed laws regarding
summer attire permitted on city
streets. ' l
Your letter originates from a
: large metropolitan area where
business and professional peo
ple go to and from work. If you
live in a quiet, wholly residen
tial section then you could wear
bermuda shorts to the store.
Otherwise they would be com
pletely out of place — and so
would you.
Shorts are considered sport
or casual wear. They are ap
propriate at a beach or resort.
You could wear them to a tennis
game or swimming pool in a
small town. Never in a big city.
And, of course, short shorts are
out — at all times, anywhere!
A good rule to follow, Mau
reen: the larger the city the
less opportunity for wearing
shorts.

GOOD COMPLEXION
Dear Doris:
I’m 16 and my complexion is
very poor. My mother says it
will clear up as I get older. In
the meantime can you tell me
anything I can do about it?
Helen
Dear Helen:
A good complexion thrives on
soap and water and proper diet.
Extra care in diet and cleanli
ness can clear up many irrita
tions.
Since your mother is aware of
your anxiety she must see that
' you get a well-balanced diet at
home.
Check what you eat between
meals and away from home.
Most teen-agers are 3C fans:
coke, cake and candy. Go easy
on these and peanuts and potato
chips.
Keep your face absolutely
clean. Wash it several times a
day with a mild soap and warm
water.
What ever helps your health
helps your Complexion. So, get
lots, of fresh air, exercise and
rest. These . give your skin a
healthy glow.
If your complexion doesn’t
improve your mother may have
you consult the family dqctor.

QUESTION
BOX
Reportedly at least one bishop
has decided that it would be
better to send these invitations
than to risk the expulsion of
more priests. In some places so
many priests have been eypell-
ed that Catholics are left with
out the Mass and sacraments.
The eldest son and namesake
of Generalisimo Trujillo is tak
ing a prominent part in this
campaign, the reports say. Gen.
Rafael Trujillo, Jr., has availed
himself of some “political”
priests who serve as chaplains
to the armed forces, it is report
ed. He sends these priests into
parishes to round up children
for baptism and adults for mar
riage. The younger Trujillo then
acts as sponsor for all the bap
tisms and marriages, and the
Trujillo press has another fea
ture story.
It has become known that
these marriages are invalid since
the priests act without authority
from the bishops. These priests
are ostracized by the rest of the
clergy, and generally despised
by Catholics of the country, the
reports state.

what was the "Holy of Holies"?
A. The “Holy of Holies” was
the innermost chamber of the
Sanctuary of the Temple at Je
rusalem. It was so-called be
cause it was considered the
mystical dwelling place of the
God of Israel; hence, the most
sacred place on earth. Only the
high priest entered the Holy of
Holies.
G. Is the "Hail, Holy Queen"
part of the rosary? Must it be
said?
A. The "Hail, Holy Queen” is
not an essential part of the ros
ary. Hence it may be omitted
at will. In the public recitation
of the rosary, it is usually in
cluded by virtue of custom. It
is thought that it was first add
ed regularly to the rosary in
Dominican churches.
FR. O’BRIEN

instructions of Father Smyth
with explanations of my own.
When she began to pray and to
accompany us to Mass, I knew
she was already well on her
way.
“The doctrine of the Holy
Eucharist made a particular ap
peal to mother. ‘How wonderful
it is,’ she said, ‘that Christ gives
us His very self for our spiritual
nourishment.’ When she made
her first Holy Communion her
cup of joy was filled to over
flowing. So too was mine. By
bringing people to instructions
every Catholic can win souls
for Christ.”
Father O'Brien will be grate
ful to readers who know of any
one who has wont two or more
converts if they will send the
names and addresses of such
persons to him at Notre Dame
University, Notre Dame, Indi-
Jottings...
(Continued from Page 4)
I’m a cynic I couldn’t quite un
derstand Giacomo. I don’t know
if there were ‘attacks’ on the
Church and if they were valid,
or if it was mere ‘sniping’ but
it’s encouraging in Catholic
literature and I’m sure the
Church will survive and endure
as it has for lo! these many
years. I thought Mr. West’s
writing bogged down in spots
but, on the whole, the book was
pure delight.”
• THE FINAL correspondent
quoted is neither writer nor
critic but an intelligent reader.
This is what she had to say
about the book: “I only wish
that spurious writers like West
would turn into honest writers
like Tennessee Williams and
write honest pornography, with
no other excuse than writing
about sex for the sake of sex.
I wish to God they would leave
out the Church. ‘Lead us not
into temptation’ we pray. Well,
if there is any red-blooded man
or woman who after reading
that book does not. feel at least
gentle prickings then he is in
deed armoured with an abund
ance of grace. My first reaction
was boredom which quickly
turned to disgust and then to
anger ... In a sense the book
is well named. I was surprised
and outraged to find it in the
college library. And don’t give
me that old Shakespeare routine
either. At least Shakespeare had
good taste. If I lost my diamond
ring in the garbage heap, I
would rather leave it there than
search through the stench try
ing to find it.” . . . Amen.
• THERE you have a variety
(!) of opinions on “The Devil’s
Advocate” from the writer, the
critic and an articulate reader.
I would hesitate to recommend
“The Devil’s Advocate” for gen
eral reading. The Catholic Book
Club newsletter has reported
many complaints ,to their
choice of it. But the- editor an
swered the attacks, in part, as
follows: “We call attention to
the many other Catholic re
viewers, priests included, who
have given “The Devil’s Advo
cate” high praise. The problem,
alas, will arise again just as
often as the CBC selects a book
that dares portrays characters
who sin. But it’s not at all a
losing fight—the CBC continues
to grow not, (please God) by
pandering to low tastes but by
winning more and more mem
bers who want books that ap
peal to the mature mind . . .
the devoted and devout and in
telligent members of the Board,
under Father Gardiner’s chair
manship, work hard to provide
good books, decent books, Cath
olic books for CBC member
ship.” Want to join the discus
sion? Let us know what your
attitude on this adult Catholic
novel is.
