(Continued from Page 4)
THE SYMBOLISM of purifi
cation was assigned to incense
in medieval times, when it was
first generally blessed for use
in divine worship.
TODAY, ONLY ONE of
these reasons remains para
mount; incense is now used
after the funeral Mass primari
ly to demonstrate respect for
the body which shared inti
mately in the life of God him
self, particularly by means of
the Blessed Eucharist and the
sacraments.
Q. I have been reading a
commentary on the work of
Sigmund Freud. How is it
that a man of so great an in
tellect could have been so
thoroughly in error from a
philosophical viewpoint?
A. Ignorance, probably. One
of the most significant prob
lems Freud never solved for
himself was the relationship
between faith and reason. In
his eyes (as indeed in the eyes
of many otherwise intellectual
ly apt persons) faith implied
denial of reason.

HELP IN YOUR PROBLEMS
Dear Doris:
I’m a college freshman.
Could you please explain what
I should do when one of my
professors says something in
class that is against our re
ligion?
Bill
You can always challenge a
college professor’s statement.
But be careful to do it polite
ly. If some statement sounds
strange and you think the class
may be misled, politely in
quire if such a statement is
the professor’s opinion or if
it is factual. If factual, request
the reference.
But refrain from any debate
on the matter. Most professors
are scholars with 5 scholar’s
respect for the truth. And in
addition, the professional chair
has ways of appearing su-

"IN THIS RESPECT, one
may frankly consider Freud ig
norant despite his enormous
erudition and cultural sagacity.
This was Freud’s blind spot, as
it is the blind spot of many
scientists: in conformity with
the scientific tradition of his
age, Freud equated faith with
the rejection of reason. One
wonders how surprised Freud
would have been if he had
learned of the place St. Tho
mas Aquinas assigns to reason,
to intelligence (Freud’s Logos)
in his theology. How much
more surprised Freud would
have been if he had learned
that Thomas Aquinas was op
posed to that knowledge of
God which was based on au
thorities only, and if he had
learned how much the deep
mysticism and contemplative
functioning of the mystics such
as the Carmelites (according
to one of the greatest of them,
St. John of the Cross) had to
be based on reason, intellect,
and rational knowledge.”
THIS POINT underscores

that they remain at the intel

DULL FRIENDS
Dear Doris:
I’m a junior in high school.
I have some friends about
whom I need some advice. Ev
ery time I invite them to my
home the boys and girls go off
in pairs and act as if no one
else is there. I try to stimulate
activity by games, dancing and
refreshments but they just
don’t respond. Do you think I
should drop these friends even
though individually they are
very nice?
Connie
Your friends sound dull. And
they need a lesson in courtesy.
A party means social entertain
ment in groups — not pairs.
It’s a chance to enjoy one an
other’s company and have fun
together. Parties play an im
portant role in our lives. So do
friends.
Since you feel these friends
“are nice” give them another
chance. The next time plan
something special in advance.
A good party just doesn’t hap
pen. And getting this group
out of its social rut will test
your ingenuity.
Start with a novelty dance
in which you choose or change
partners. The Bunny Hop, The
Stroll and The Paul Jones are
a few. Keep the music lively.
If you haven’t records borrow
some. And get a book on party
games in the library.
Tell the girls you’re making
special plans to “liven up”
your next party and would like
to know their favorite games.
This may act as a hint that you
would like them to take part.
If these plans fail, Connie,
and your next party falls into
the same pattern take another
look at these companions. You
may v/ant to drop them. We’re
social beings and need friends.
We learn from our friends.

them. We imitate not only
dress and manners but ideals
and values. It’s smart to begin
early in life to be careful of
the friendships we make.
You have doubted their be
havior because it lacks respect
and courtesy. Remember, “A
man is known by the company
he keeps.” This goes for girls,
too. Choose Christ as your con

other companions meet His
standards too, and be assured
of good companionship and
good fun.
NURSING CAREER
Dear Doris:
In your column about nurs
ing you mentioned three dif
ferent ways of becoming a
nurse (RN). In your opinion
which is the best and why?
P. G.
The one that suits you is
best. This will depend on your
qualifications, how much time
and money you can afford,
the schools available in your
area and any long range plans
you may have for a nursing
career.
The two year community or
Junior college program which
grants an associate degree, the
three year hospital school and
the four year college program
all qualify you to take the
state licensing exam for your
RN.
Discuss the three programs
with the guidance counselor or
teacher at your school. They
know you and your high
school record. They can con
sult this plus any aptitude or
achievement tests you may
have taken. They are able to
assist you to make a wise de
cision as to choice of schoool.

TEENAGERS'
LAYS IT ON
LINE AT
PRIEST
THE
CCD MEET
(INi.C.W.C. News Service)
SPOKANE, Wash. — A
priest-authority on problems
of teenagers said here that “if
youth has any one. common
denominator, it is complete re
sentment of authority.”
Father Richard Madden,
O.C.D., spoke to 1,400 young
sters at the Uth Northwest
Regional Congress of the Con
fraternity of Christian Doc
trine, held in Gonzaga Univer
sity auditorium.
The Carmelite from Youngs
town, Ohio, is a favorite
among teenagers because he
talks and writes their “lang
uage.” His books —• the latest
is “Father Madden’s Life of
Christ” — are top sellers
among adolescents.
“We’ve left you a pretty
lousy world,” Father Madden
told the youngsters, “and we
hope that you do a better job
than we have done.”
He suggested to the young
sters: “Go home and sign a
treaty with your parents •—
brush up on the obedienece
scene.” He acknowledged that
some parents are bad exam
ples, but added, “Don’t cease to
love them because they are
failures. Remember charity.”
The popular Carmelite urg
ed the teenagers to “measure
up to, the challenge of today.”
He said: “You got to be bigger,
tougher, better and holier.
You’ve got to help one another
to be good. A girl should make
every fellow she meets a little
bit better and vice versa.”
“The future depends on how
big you meet it,” he added.
“You’ve got to be 10 feet tall,
so you can walk with the steps
of a giant. The whole world is
your business and you have a
job to do. You should develop
a knowledge of God, but see
also that other persons are in
formed.”
In a question-and-answer
session, Father Madden dis
cussed kissing, going steady,
vocations and faith. Some of
his observations follow:
—“If a kiss is wrong, the
whole French army would go
to pot.” But a kiss can’t be
used to arouse the sex instinct
in unmarried persons.
—“Going steady is wrong.
Go steady when you are ready
to get married. Going steady
now will mess up your social
life. Maintain your freedom.”
—Lipstick is a good idea, but
“you know that the lipstick is
to make older women look
younger, not younger women
look older.”
—About smoking: “When a
guy kisses a girl who smokes,
the fellow feels as if he’s put
ting his head into a coke oven.
I smoke, but it’s silly. It’s no
sin unless it’s one of disobedi
ence.”
—“We all have temptations
against our Faith. This is be
cause our minds are not big
enough to grasp this great
mystery.”
Father Madden also said:
“This is the age of the baby
sitter and that’s bad. If parents
could learn to say ‘no’ it would
help. Kids want to be told ‘no.’
But parents seem to feel they
can’t cope with the constant
battle . They say, ‘What’s the,
use?’ and there’s the hole,
in the line. And Catholic par?
enfs are just as guilty as any
others.” * ; -

To combat the danger of too-
early dating, Father Madden
suggested that parents and
school, authorities should get
together and work out curfe w
norms. This, he said, would
spike such constant pleas as
“But Mary does it, why can’t
I?” Eaiiy marriages which re
sult fr :n too-early dating, Fa
ther Madden said, “simply
don’t work.'*
Father Madden said chat the
job of sex instruction belongs
to the parents. He said “it’s a
tough job . and some parents
have the habit of ducking their
responsibility.”

recently in the Vatican, Pope John XXIII is shown with
