CARDINAL CUSHING TELLS NCCW
All Members Of Church Have
Task To Spread God's Truth
(N.C.W.C. NEWS SERVICE)
LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Every
member of the Church, not
just priests and bishops, has
a responsibility to spread the
truth revealed by God, Bos
ton’s Cardinal said here.
His Eminence Richard Car
dinal Cushing, Archbishop of
Boston, told the 30th biennial
convention of the National
Council of Catholic Women
that the laity’s responsibility
is clear.
“There are vast areas of
apostolic action, seemingly an
unlimited field for good works,
which the hierarchy and the
ordained representatives of
Christ cannot reach or, if they
reach it, cannot successfully
perform,” he said.
The Cardinal mentioned
teaching, politics, medicine,
business, law and scientific
research.
The Prince of the Church
delivered the keynote address
at the convention of some 3,-
500 representatives . of more
than 11,000 organizations af
filiated with the NCCW.
He spoke on the convention
theme, “These Works of Love,”
at an evening general assem
bly in this resort’s new con
vention center.
Earlier, Bishop Thomas K.
Gorman of Dallas-Fort Worth,
Tex., told delegates that the
women’s council is “a great

edge of the mind of the
Church.”
The Texas prelate said that
the council, through its num
erous study programs, also
serves to “emphasize the prac
tical importance of the mind
of the Church to our lives.”
On the same day (Oct. 31),
Bishop Allen J. Babcock of
Grand Rapids, Mich., delivered
the sermon at a 4 p.m. Solemn
Pontifical Mass. The Michigan
Drelate is episcopal chairman
of the NCCW.
Celebrant of the Mass was
Bishop Robert J. Dwyer of
Reno, host to the convention.
The Reno diocese embraces all
of Nevada, an area of nearly
111.000 square miles, with a
Catholic population of about
50.000 in a total population of
about 261,000.
Bishop Babcock, speaking
on charity, said it is called the
greatest of all virtues “because
it enables us to be what God
intended us to be — namely,
images of Himself.”
Christ is the model of char
ity, he said, noting that His
charity was not. satisfied with
“merely conveying a sympa
thetic sympathy for others.”
“It was effective,” he said.
'‘He did all that He could,
calling into play many times
His Divine Power in order to
relieve the cause or sorrow,
trials and tribulations and to
replace dejection and discour
agement with joy and with
hope.”
Cardinal Cushing, in the
keynote address, said voca
tions are sometimes spoken
of as if they belonged only
to the priesthood or Religious
life.
“This is not true,” he said.
“Every call to a good work or
to your ‘works of love’ is a call
from God. Every dedicated ca
reer that contributes to the
advance of the Kingdom of
Christ is a vocation.”
“Prelates and priests, Reli
gious and others who live un
der vows,” he said in his pre
pared remarks, “do God’s Will

and incomparable excellence.
“But you, in all the honor
able pursuits of your lives are
no less called to do that Will
even though the nature and
manner of your vocation be
different.”
“Clergy and laity alike are
called to bring the Gospel to
our generation, to penetrate
the temporal order with the
saving principles and precepts
of eternity.
“The response of some to
that call is direct, of others,
indirect. Some answer as lead
ers, some as loyal followers.
Some bring God’s Will by di
rection, some by indirection.
Some are obliged to do their
work in public, some labor
privately, unknown and un
sung.
“But the fact remains that
all share in the work.” the
Cardinal said.
Noting papal calls for lay
assistances to the Church, the
Cardinal told the women they
can best answer this call “and
most effectively counteract the
power of our communist foes,”
by promoting the NCCW,
“whose manifold works of
love serve to protect, promote
and preserve the spiritual life
of both benefactor and bene
ficiary and, incidentally, con
stitute a vigorous vindication
of the divine origin, mission
and perennial vitality of our
Holy Faith.”
In his address, Bishop Gor
man spoke on “The Mind of
the Church — Our Accent. He
illustrated his thesis that the
NCCW plays a major role in
telling Catholics what the
Church thinks by citing the
successful establishment of a
women’s council in the Reno
diocese.
Bishop Gorman was the first
Bishop of Reno, serving as the
spiritual leader of Nevada’s
Catholics from 1931 to 1952.
In 1931, he said, there were
8,000 Catholics in the state,
served by 14 priests. Unifica
tion of this dispersed group
was among the first of his ad
ministrative tasks, Bishop
Gorman recalled.
The first tool he used, said
the prelate, was a Catholic
newspaper, the Nevada Regis
ter. The second was the wom
en’s council.
“The advent of the council
and its program,” he said, “not
only instituted the affiliation
of the, previously existing par
ish groups of women.
“It also stimulated their
growth and broadened their
interests and activities in par
ish and diocese. Affiliates
sprang into being and intelli
gent action began where none
had previously existed.”
A stopped school bus should
represent an automatic stop
signal to cars from all direc
tions, the Allstate Safety Cru
sade says. Motorists will avoid
the hazard of youngsters rush
ing to or from the bus by
waiting until the bus leaves.
Parents who drive their chil
dren to and from school should
park well away from the
school, says the Allstate Safety
Crusade. This eliminates con
gestion around school entranc
es which could conceal a child
about to run into the street.
