To any one who happens to
be skeptical about the modern
Catholic’s freedom and ability
to contribute to the intellect
ual life of our times, this book
should be presented. In his in
troduction, Fr. D’Arcy, S.J.,
notes that those who are pre
judiced against Catholic think
ers “count it against them that
their views are very old and
musty. Tht art of living and
thinking, they clailm, is to be
contemporary. Furthermore,
not only are the ideas they
follow out of date; they are
bound to accept an authorized
version and therefore, to re
peat a lesson by heart. The
Catholic is as tied to a set of
formulas as the Marxist; he is
equally intransigent and with
a mind closed to other ideas.
Such critics are inclined to
look upon counter-arguments
as special pleading..
Dr. Caponigri, assuming that
evidence to the contrary is the
only suitable method of per
suading such dissenting critics,
has brought together thirty-
eight essays by Catholics
whose work leaves no suspi
cion that any system of ideas
has been imposed or true lib
erty of thought curtailed.
Aside from the excellence of
Dr. Caponigri’s choices, the an
thology has the further advan
tage of leading the reader to
the original work from which
many of these essays have
been taken, and in presenting
him with translations of sig
nificant chapters of books
which have not and may never
be published in this country.
The selections range from a
chapter, “Human and Divine,”
taken from the well-known,
MIND AND HEART OF LOVE
by Fr. D’Arcy, to “Existential
ism,” from an unpublished
manuscript of Regis Jolivet.
This anthology will make an
excellent Christmas gift for
any college student brighter
than most or for anyone else
concerned with the life of the
mind.

It is a kind of book to have on
hand year after year to dip
into, to sample, to help with
the spirit of Christmas. The
collector or arranger, Neville
Braybrooke, had a field day in
combing sources far and near
both in time and in place for
Christmas writings. From this
harvest comes the book’s title
and much, much more.

whose works have been sifted
for Christmas materials are
Anonymous, a handy fellow to
have around, as well as Belloc,
Lewis Carrol, Chesterton, Dy
lan Thomas and Thackery, to
name but a few.
This is not a book of sac-
chrine sentimentalities, nor of
Christmas • stories to be read
aloud to children before a
blazing Yule log—far from it.
Rather it is Christmas seen
through centuries of experi
ence and expression. There is
an 8th Century dialogue be
tween Mary with Child and
Joseph in mental torment over
her pregnacy; there is the call
in heavily accented English
across a World War I battle
field “Come over, Tommy! We
won’t fire.” German and Eng
lish soldiers shook hands and
sang together that 1914 Christ
mas Eve and Christmas Day.
After all, and in spite of all,
it was Christmas.
The opposite side of Christ
mas has a place here too; the
periods of repression of Christ
mas because it' was Romish,
Papist, and the Jewish Feast
of Light, Chanukah. And,
isn’t a window pane etched in
frost Christmas too?
The potpourri is at least as
varied as is the variety of
gifts of “my true love” before
he gets to the bird in the pear
tree. There is a perspective
and substance here of Christ
mas that, to say the least, is

delightful and different. If
your inclinations are to pot
bellied Santas, this -is not your
dish.

Man has a proclivity to read
and to write and there are
many do-it-yourself publica
tions for either of these incli
nations, Henry F. Unger, a
kind of professional Catholic
writer a.nd editor, layman var
iety, recognizes some recur
ring and special needs of those
who would write for the
Catholic market. There is, for
example, obvious need for and
the volume contains a list of
publishers of Catholic periodi
cals and books as well as one
of Catholic book clubs.
The bulk of the book relates
to the craft and to the busi
ness of writing but don’t mis
take it for a college rhetoric
textbook — which it definitely
is not. There is guidance to
help the writer see stories and
articles in everyday experi
ences; there is incentive to
see opportunities for publica
tion of worthwhile matter in
“Letters to the Editor” and in
the Sunday supplement as
well as in the big national
weeklies and monthlies. Then,
on the business of writing,
there are such mundane, prac
tical things as contracts, liter
ary agents, and income tax
considerations for the writer
for the Catholic market too;
he is not exempt.
There are many books of
this general character avail
able; this one bears the unique
stamp of being Catholic-writer
Catholic-market oriented. For
those who wish this orienta
tion and who have an aversion
to rejection slips, it Will be
well worth its weight in that
which writers wish they had
more of.
