OLD—BUT EVER NEW
The film “Exodus” tells the
story oi the birth of a new
nation. Archbishop Hakim's
Masson Si. Andre is the story
of a new project, a work ol
mercy arising from the ruins
of an old building, it is a case
of the Churcti taking a cooi,
new look at a crumunng, out
episcopal palace and deciding
to imuoe new lile into it in
stead of p>eserving it as a
sacred relic.
That new life means com
fort ana consolation xor some
of the most foriorn of ail Gou s
creatures. It means mat me
Uhurcfi, in the person of the
Archbishop, has arranged to
transport six angels of mercy
from Belgium and Holland to
the bedsides of the sick poor
in a aisolate city.
New Year’s always reminds
me of the everlasting newness
of the Catholic Church. I have
never been impressed oy the
venerable age of the Cnurch
nor can I say I was impressed
by the venerable ruins of the
sacred places around Jerusa
lem. The miracle of the
Church is that it so old yet so
exuberantly new.
In history, as Cardinal New
man showed in his famous
“Second Spring” sermon, the
Church always shows a burst
of new life just when the
world is about to consider her
dead forever. At the beginning
of this century many European
savants said the Church was

that should be expected of a

QUESTION
BOX
(Continued from Page 4)
FOR THIS latter interpreta
tion, there is no direct, unmis
takably explicit testimony in
Scripture, Tradition or official
Church pronouncements. Even
so apparently clear an expres
sion as St. Bernard’s “God has
willed that we should have ev
erything through Mary” is ex
plained by some theologians
merely with reference to
Mary’s motherhood.
(A third theory in explana
tion of Mary as mediatrix has
also been proposed, but it has
not received widespread ac-
cepta: ce. According to this in
terpretation Mary helps pro
duce in man a kind of “dis
position” calling for the grace.)
WHATEVER the manner,
though, Mary is truly the med
iatrix of all graces. Yet, as Fa
ther William Most cautions in
his ‘May in Our Life:’ “We
must openly admit that in the
present state of the evidence
it seems to be impossible to
prove which of these theories
is correct.”
ANOTHER CAUTION: Mary
is certainly not a mediator in
the sense that Christ is. It is
obvious that no creature, not
even the most perfect creature
that Mary is, could possibly be
a mediator of justice between
God and human beings. In the
primary sense of the word,
Christ the God-Man and Christ
alone bridges the infinite
chasm between God and man.
MARY'S MEDIATION is ex
ercised between her Divine
Son and ourselves. Jean Guit-
ton quotes a beautiful passage
from Berulle in this respect:
“Christ’s intimate union with
the divine Persons is eternal;
his union with the Virgin is
new, even recent; but it will
endure for all eternity. This
Blessed Virgin is, and will
ever be, the Mother of God.
She is his mother in heaven
no less than on earth, and as
Mother of God he will honor
her eternally.”

VATICAN CITY — His Holi
ness Pope Jonn XXiil has
called upon world leaders,
parents and those responsiole
lor public opinion to “mink,
honor, say and uo what is
u ue.” f
He made his appeal in his
annual message marking tne
birtn of unrist, "tne uivine
Word, which is Truth. ’
ft was tne Pomni's third
Christmas message, m his
nrst, in i958, he issued a “iov-
ing invitation” to ail wno are
separated from the true tom
tc return to it. ms message
m idotf urged the worm m
remove from the path of peace
the obstacles put there by
“the malice of man.”
His tnird Cnrisimas message,
5,5UU words in lengtn, pieauea
for a return to tne nrst and
necessary premise of aii hu
man intercourse, truth.
The message began with an
examination of tne prologue to
tne Gospel of St. junn which
recounts the mystical meaning
of Christmas with “in the De-
ginning was the VV’ord, and the
Word was with God, and the
Word was God.”
The Pope noted particularly
that the prologue enas witn
the “we have seen riis gioiy
grace and truth.” From tnai
point he took- his tneme oi
truth, observing that t»t. Au
gustine in his treatise on tne
xjiessed Trinity identified
“word” with "truth.”
The Pontiff said: “This mes
sage of greeting which We
long to give you is above ail
a solemn call to live in a ac
cordance with the fourfold
duty of thinking, honoring,
saying and doing wnat
true.”
lo think what is true, he
said, is to “have clear ideas
on the great Uivine and hu
man realities, of the Redemp
tion of the uhuren, of morals
and of law, 01 philosophy and
of art; to have right ideas or
seek to form them for your
self conscientiously and with
a right intention.”
To honor wnat is true, Pope
John continued, “is an invita
tion to ue a radiant example
in all spheres of life — in
dividual, family, professional,
social.” Adding that "not
aione in guilt is he who ae-
liuerateiy obscures the truth,
out just as muen he wno, from
tear of not seeming complete
and up to date, betrays it by
tne ambiguity of his attitude.”
The Pope classified "saying
what is true,” as a most ele
mental act of man learned at
his mother’s knee.
To do what is true is more
important, the Pope said.
"Charity obliges us to exercise
the apustoiate of truth, so as
to spread knowledge of it, to
defend its rights, to mold
souls — particularly those of
youth which are open and gen
erous — to aiiow themselves
to be impregnated with it t<
the deepest libers of their .be
ing.”
There’s a “counter-deca
logue” to this fourfold duty
toward truth to be found in
the world, the Pope declared,
which attempts to erase the
"not” which is the prefix to
the six words of God’s Com
mandments which follow,
Honor thy father and thy
mother.”
This counter-decalogue is
sues commands to kill, com
mit adultery, steal and bear
false witness “as if by a dia
bolical conspiracy against
truth,” he said.
The Pontiff added that “wc

The Pope then directed a
specific plea to heads of state
and of regional and civic ad
ministrations, educators, par
ents and teachers and “to
those — and We emphasize
this — responsibile for public
opinion which is being formed
or deformed by means of the
press, radio and television, by
the cinema, by meeting and
exhibitions of every kind,
literary or artistic — writers,
artists, producers, directors,
scenery designers.”
To all these the Pope said:
“Never lend yourselves to any
counterfeiting of truth; have
a horror of tnat.
“Do not use these marvelous
gifts of Gou, such as lignt and
sound and color, and ineir ap

“Have a sacred terror of
spreading those germs which
desecrate love, break up the
family, mock religion, and
loosen the foundations of the
social orders.”
Addressing all men of the
world as “dear ciiildren,” Pope
John invited them to come
with him in spirit to Bethle
hem “with innocent eyes and
welcoming hearts.”
The Rope also recalled the
scene wnere Christ walked on
the waters of a stormy sea and
asked St. Peter to leave his
boat and walk toward Him on
the waters. He noted that St.
Peter, frightened by the storm,
began to sink and was chided
by Christ as a “man of little
faith.”
Pope John then told his
listeners: “The humble succes
sor o*f St. Peter is not experi
encing any temptation to dis
may . . . We can cross not
only the tiny Lake of Galilee,
but all the seas of the world.
Christ’s word is enough for
safety and for victory.”.
Then, quoting the old Testa
ment King Ezeehias when he
was warned against coming
disasters, the Pope made the
king’s words his own: “Enough
for me is peace and truth in
my days.”
