In 1896, the building in
which the business was locat
ed was destroyed by fire and
Mr. Patterson moved to 32
Peachtree Street, N.E. at Five
Points, the present location of
the William Oliver Building.
He operated successfully in
this location until 1904, by
which time the town of At
lanta had grown to such an
extent that the Five Points
area became quite congested.
In 1904, Mr. Patterson con
structed a building at 110 N.

at present being occupied by
the Town House Cafeteria, and
is next to the Carnegie Li

New Course

Belmont
BELMONT — A new course
is being offered to freshmen
at Belmont Abbey College this
year — a reading course that
extends through two semesters
and covers some fifteen books
each term. That is almost a
book a week for the nine
months of school, which is a
steady diet of reading, espe
cially for a college student
whose other classes may de
mand library assignments
equally long.
But the freshmen have
plunged into the reading
schedule with an enthusiasm
which convinces the college
administration that television
has not yet completely replac
ed the printed page. Campus
discussion centering around
standard classics and contem
porary novels kept even the
annual World Series fever at
a moderate pitch this, year.
College officials feel that
part, of the interest shown by
the L students results front t^ie
care 1 taken in selecting the
reading list. The books were
chosen last Spring from sug
gestions made by all members
of the faculty. Each depart
ment submitted titles of a not-
too-technical nature pertain
ing to its particular field. The
job of winnowing out the
finalists fell mainly upon
George Herndl, Chairman of
the Department of English.
The manner of instruction,
too, has encouraged zeal for
reading. In groups of around
twenty students, the freshmen
meet each Monday with a
‘acuity member whose special
nterests determined his as
signed book. The instructor
ectures for an hour on some
ispect of the book and meets
tis student group again the
Allowing Friday for a quiz
md class discussion. The next
Monday a different teacher, a
lifferent book.

ATLANTA — On Sunday,
February 19, 1961, the beauti
ful new building, known as
Oglethorpe Hill, located at
4550 Peachtree Road, will be
dedicated and opened to the
public by H. M. Patterson &
Son, Atlanta’s oldest funeral
directing firm. Dedication
will be held at 3 o’clock Sun
day afternoon. The building
will be opened for public
viewing at 4 o’clock that day.
Constructed at a cost in ex
cess of $300,000.00, the archi
tecture is. Greek Revival, v/ith
red brick and limestone trim.
It is set on a lot facing 400
feet on Peachtree Road, the
depth being approximately
600 feet. This large tract per
mits two beautiful gardens —
one on either side of the build
ing, ample driveways, and
parking space for 250 cars —
all off street.
The floor plan and appoint
ments are similar to those at
Spring Hill, the main facility,
there being 524 rooms in the
building. The chapel, a dupli
cate of the Spring Hill Chapel,
seats 200 people on the main
floor, with provision for 150
more in the wings.
The furnishings, done by
Miss Nancy Downing, interior
decorator, are similar to those
of a fine home, and in keep
ing with the architecture of
the building. Included are re
ception rooms, state rooms,
display rooms, preparation
rooms and business offices.
Garage space, separate from
the main building, is provided
for 10 pieces of equipment.
The building will be staffed
by experienced personal, es
pecially trained at Spring Hill,
capable of rendering the same
high type service as at the
main facility.
The architects were Ivey
and Crook, located in the
Candler Building. The general
contractor was Mion Construc
tion Company.
H. M. Patterson & Son, as
a business, came into being in
Atlanta in 1881, when the late
H. M. Patterson, who came to
Atlanta from Ohio as a very
young man the year before,
purchased the business of Mr.
George R. Beaz. At that time,
the business was located at 20
Lloyd Street, the old Mark-
(See Noiice on Page 7)
building in the South erected
especially for a Funeral Di
recting Business, having in it
a chapel, state rooms, recep-
tljpn room$, offices,, adequate
garage space and every mod
ern convenience of that day.
Mr. Fredrick W. Patterson,
son of the founder, is presi
dent of the company.
In 1905, Mr. Patterson took
his son, Fredrick W. Patterson,
into the business as a partner,
and the firm became known as
H. M. Patterson & Son. The
firm operated in this location
until 1928. At that time, Mr.
Fred Patterson, having be
come the head of the firm fol
lowing the death of his father
in 1923, decided that the
downtown area was entirely
unsuited for the proper opera
tion of a funeral business, and
began plans for the construc
tion of Spring Hill, to be lo
cated at 1020 Spring St. N.W.,
this, street being one of the
main north and south arteries
of Atlanta. This magnificent
structure, known as one of the
finest buildings of its kind in
the entire country, was built
as a memorial to the late H.
M. Patterson, and stands to
day as an emblem of the heri-

tage of service so strongly ex
emplified in the life of this
great Atlantian.
In 1931, after graduation
from Georgia Tech, Mr. Bran
non B. Lesesne entered the
employ of the company as an
assistant funeral director. Be
coming manager in 1940, and
a partner in 1948, he is now
general manager, secretary
and treasurer.
Mr. Ben F. Noble has had
charge of the beautiful gar
dens at Spring Hill for the
past fifteen years and will also
supervise the gardens at Ogle
thorpe Hill.
Now, in 1961, realizing that
Atlanta has grown into a great
metropolitan center and that
it is becoming increasingly
difficult to properly render a
real service to Atlanta from
one location, it was decided
that additional facilities were
needed. It was evident that
families throughout the en
tire cit^ and the surrounding
area showed an increasing
preference for the quite digni
ty and efficiency of the serv
ice rendered by H. M. Patter
son & Son. Consequently, the
decision was made to locate
such facilities in strategic
points throughout the area, so
as to provide the same per
sonalized services, amid simi
lar fine beautiful surround
ings, at the same reasonable
cost, but with the added con
venience of preferred location.
Hence, the building at 4550
Peachtree Road at Oglethorpe,
to serve the greatly expanded
Northern part of Atlanta. In
this fine new mortuary the
same elegant surroundings,
the same high standard of
service and the same reason
able cost will prevail as at
Spring Hill, which for over
thirty years, has been looked
on as the finest jn the Funeral
Service field.
