O'Neill (Radio, N.C.W.C News Service) VATICAN CITY — His Holi ness Pope John XXIII told the world on Easter that despite persecution, bloodshed and tribulation, Christ will tri umph as He did on the first Easter. Seated on a throne on the central balcony of St. Peter’s, Pope John spoke to about 250,000 people gathered in the square below, and to television and radio audiences of mil lions throughout most of West ern Europe. He concluded by extending Easter greetings in 15 languages, including a well- pronounced “A Happy and Blessed Easter to You All” in English. The Pope delivered the Third Easter message of his reign after celebrating Solemn Mass in the basilica in the presence of 22 cardinals, the whole papal court, and 40,000 people. He began his address by quoting in Latin the words of Christ: “I am the Resurrec tion and the Life.” With this as his text, the Pope recalled the liturgy of Holy Week and its climax in the Resurrection. Easter, Pope John said, is the “celebration, perennial and ever-renewed, of the mystery of Christ; of Christ the glori ous and immortal King of the nations and of the ages; the comfort and encouragement of all humanity, redeemed by Him and preserved for the tri umph of its eternal destiny and also for the peaceful suc cess of human living together and of ordered prosperity on earth.” The Pontiff described Christ as a “point of contradiction for so many centuries, despised and rejected and always glori ous and always victorious.” Throughout his speech, the Pope made references to the troubles and temporary defeats besetting the Church and man kind. But he stressed through out it the ultimate victory of Christ as demonstrated by the Resurrection. The Pope said: “Sometimes sadness seeks to invade our soul amidst the recurring disagreeable and, here and there, terrifying ac tions of a great number of men who belong to human so ciety — and by nature are our brothers — but towards whom, in fact, to wish to be indul gent means nothing else than to apply correctly the last judgmnt and the last prayer of the dying Jesus: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” “Their disordered cries fill the cities and the fields. Their threatening agitation disturbs and troubles those who love justice, liberty, a life that is laborious, honored, beneficient and tranquil. It is the same agitation that saddened the streets of Zion on the tragic eve of the death of Jesus.” Looking down at the hun dreds of thousands gathered in St. Peter’s square, the Pope told them of his personal feel ings: “Your presence and partici pation, so imposing, re spectful and pious, in this Easter celebration, tempers the anxiety and interior distress of him who bears the most intense and acute responsibil ity and solicitude for the sal vation of all the flock of Christ, which the divine Shep herd of souls has redeemed with His Blood.” Despite all the suffering Christ endured, the Pope re called, He prophesied that He would rise again. “And thus it happened. He rose again ex actly after three days. “In the last hours of His sojourn here below, He (utter ed) the final predictions about His Church: its tribulations, strife and struggles, likewise also most bloody. Jesus con tinued: ‘I have overcome the world: I shall be with you even to the consummation of the world.’ The world contin ues its history. It is sure, how ever, that its consummation will represent the eternal glo ry of Christ tne Son of God of all those who put their trust in Him.” Pope John told Christians that the lesson and the spirit ual richness of Easter is meant to be a “powerful stimulus — also this year — in the reso lute striving on the part of each of us for a more decisive uplifting toward those noble heights to which the voice of our conscience and the good inspirations of our Lord call us, on guard, as we must al ways keep ourselves, against BERLIN (NC) — The Pri mate of Poland has again warned that renewed commu nist attempts to silence the Church there will fail. Stefan Cardinal Wyszynski, Archbishop of Gniezno and Warsaw, declared in an Easter sermon: “The effrots of those striving to shut the Church’s lips are futile.” His words echoed a chal lenge he flung at Poland’s communist rulers two weeks before. He then called them “Caesars” and said they would bow to their Creator. He said he was gratified to note that Catholics are coming to church in crowds, “especial ly in the last two weeks.” He human betrayal, against dif fusive weakness, against in dividual and collective infidel ity to the most sacred laws of life.” The Pope concluded by giv ing his blessing to the whole world, and expressed Easter greetings in 15 languages: Italian, English, French, Ger man, Spanish, Portuguese, Po lish; Dutch, Greek, Russian, Serbian, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Croatian and Solvenian. Then he intoned the Latin formula to give his blessing “urbi et orbi” — to the city and to the world — which concluded the annual commemoration of the greatest feast of the Church year. spoke to a congregation of 1,000 in Warsaw’s Cathedral. Cardinal Wyszynski said all efforts to silence the Church are vain “because we must obey God rather than men.” He declared: “So often have seals been put on the mouth of the Church to keep it quiet. So often has it been weighed down with stones. So often have many false witnesses come forth. But all that was vain because Christ lives in the Church and, having died once, will not die again.” BANKRUPT Sti down and wait for your ship to come in, and it’s apt to be a receivership.
