But preliminary esti

indicate that the 1961 cam

top." According to Bishop
Thomas J. McDonough,
many parishes have alrea
dy oversubscribed their

parishes, however, were
incomplete as The Bulletin

DUBLIN—The Golden Anniversary of the Church
of The Immaculate Conception will be observed Sunday,
November 5th. Presiding at the ceremonies will be the
Most Rev. Thomas J. McDonough, D.D., J.C.D., Bishop
of Savannah.
An extensive program of became the first in the diocese
renovation has just been fin
ished. The program has en
abled the parish to landscape,
install new pews, modernize
the interior and beautify the
exterior of the building.
The Holy Sacrifice of the
Mass was first offered in the
Church of the Immaculate
Conception on June 25, 1911.
The Catholic Church has fig
ured prominently in the his
tory of Dublin since it was an
Irishman and his Catholic wife
who gave the city its name.
Records indicate that a Fath
er Kennedy paid semi-annual
visits to say Mass for the hand
ful of Catholics. He was fol
lowed by Father Shadeweil
and Father Winkelreid, S.J.
Then followed a succession of
mission fathers among whom
were two Jesuit Fathers, Gore
and Dane. During these years
services were held in the
homes of Dublin Catholics.
One of the early missionary
priests in the Dublin area was
the Rev. Richard Hamilton,
who was pastor of the Sacred
Heart Church, Milledgeville.
Available records indicate that
Father Hamilton conceived the
idea of a church in Dublin as
far back as 1905.
On February 2, 1911 con
struction on a Church for Dub
lin was begun. His Excellency
the Most Rev. Benjamin J.
Kieley, Bishop of Savannah,
dedicated the new church on
Sunday, June 25, 1911. The
sermon was preached by a
Father Revill of Macon.
Many priests have served
Immaculate Conception. After
Father Hamilton came Father
Dan McCarthy; Father T. J.
Morrow; Father T. James Mc
Namara (now Rt. Rev. Msgr.
McNamara); Father James E.
King (now Very Rev. Msgr.
King); Father L. L. Toups, a
Jesuit now teaching in New
Orleans; Father Nicholas Fri-
zelle; Father Walter Donovan;
Father Robert F. Brennan, who
served from June 1948 until
July 1960 when he was named
pastor at Sacred Heart, Warner
.Robins.
A new era in the history of
the Immaculate Conception
Church began on September 1,
1960, with the arrival of the
Rev. Cajetan McDyre, M.S.-
Ss.T., and the Rev. Myron
Bateman, M.S.Ss.T. With their
coming the church in Dublin
to be under the care of the
Missionary Servants of the
Most Holy Trinity.

Georgia's First Lady
Monastery Visitor
NEW WING FOR PACELLI HIGH
CONYERS—On October 3,
Mrs. Ernest Vandiver, the
First Lady of Georgia, paid an
informal visit to the Trappist
monastery of Our Lady of the
Holy Ghost, Conyers, Georgia.
According to an ancient
privilege which is confirmed
by Canon 598 No. 2 of the Code
of Canon Law the wife of the
actual head of state enjoys the
right to enter the enclosure of
regulars, that is, religious who
pronounce solemn vows. This
privilege was at first accorded
only to Queens and Empresses
but in the course of time when
different forms of government
arose this privilege was grant
ed and extended to include the
wives of those who actually
rule a legitimately established
government.
In recent years this privilege
was interpreted to include not
only the wife of the President
of the United States but also
the wife of the Governor of
each individual state. It was
in virtue of this privilege that
Mrs. Vandiver entered the en
closure of the monastery to
gether with her party which
included nine other ladies and
eight gentlemen.
The primary purpose of the
visit was to study the possi
bility of establishing at the
monastery an emergency hos
pital in the event of a national
disaster. To better study this
possibility Mrs. Vandiver in
cluded in her party several
persons who are well acquaint
ed with the needs and prob
lems of Civil Defense. The vis
itors were guided through the
monastery by the Father Ab
bot, the Rt. Reverend Dom Aur
gustine Moore and several of
the monks of the community.
