This general meeting was one of the last steps before ca nonization of the two Reli gious. Although it was not yet officially announced, it was known that Blessed Martin will be canonized on May 6. No date was available for Blessed Francesco’s canoniza tion. Both men were lay Broth ers, Blessed Martin a 17-centu ry Dominican and Blessed Francesco a 19th-century Ca puchin. Canonization will bring the two men, one a half- caste Peruvian and the other an Italian, together on the Church’s official roll of saints. The cures effected through the intercession of the two Brothers have been declared beyond the powers of nature by the congregation’s medical board. These miracles have also been approved by card inals of the congregation. The first cure in the case of Blessed Martin occurred in 1948, when Dorotea Caballero of Paraguay was instantan eously healed of an intestinal occlusion. The second was that of Antonio Calvlra Perez, who suffered a foot injury in 1959 at Tenerife, in the Canary Is lands, when a wall collapsed. He developed gangrene of the foot, but was healed instan taneously. The first of the Capuchin’s miracles was the cure of a frac tured jawbone and concussion suffered by Angelo Parpagli- one at Chiavari, Italy, on Sep tember 4, 1929.
