Parents Deal Blow To Segregationist
Hopes In New Orleans As Enrollments
In Catholic Schools Approach Record
PAGE 2—THE BULLETIN, April 28, 1962
NEW ORLEANS, (NC)-Catho-
lic parents here appear to have
dealt a smashing blow to se
gregationist hopes for a boy
cott of Catholic schools when
they are desegregated next fall.
An “informal survey” by the
New Orleans and archdiocesan
school office indicates that the
number of children in greater
New Orleans Catholic schools
in l962-’63 may equal or ex
ceed the previous all-time high.
By April 11, some 90 per
cent of the children enrolled
in Catholic schools had indi
cated that they would return
next September, according to
the school office survey, made
public (April 12) by the arch
diocesan Bureau of Informa
tion.
The initial figures did not in
clude new pupils seeking admis
sion to kindergarten and the
first year of high schools. They
were scheduled to enroll later.
At present, the total Catholic

school enrollment here is
61,025 in 116 elementary
school and 14,682 in 37 high
schools. There are 10,851 Ne
gro students in 30 Catholic
schools.
The massive school enroll
ment seemed a flat contradic
tion of predictions by segrega
tionists that Catholic schools
here faced a “mass boycott”
after the March 27 school inte
gration order by Archbishop
Joseph F. Rummel.
At the same time the school
enrollment figures were an
nounced, Msgr. Charles J.
Plauche, archdiocesan chancel
lor, disclosed that attendance
at Mass and the sacraments and
contributions to ‘ church col
lections had remained at their
usual levels throughout the
archdiocese and had increased
in some places.
Msgr. Plauche singled out the
April 1, Laetare Sunday, Bis
hops’ Relief Fund collection for
comment. He said preliminary
returns showed contributions
at 95 per cent of the alltime high
set in 1961, and added that late
contributions could bring the to
tal above last year’s record.
Observers noted that April
1 was the first Sunday after the
school integration order was
announced. Some segrega
tionists had urged Catholics to
withhold financial support to
the Church in protest.
The fact that 90 per cent of
the children in greater New
Orleans Catholics schools had
indicated their intention of re
turning next year by April 11
did not tell the full story. The
entire week of April 8 had been
set aside for this pre-regis
tration, and thus students still
had several more days to sig
nify their intentions.
In addition, the first wave of
registrations accounted only for
students who were to remain in
the same schools next year. Pu
pils planning to enter kinder
garten or the first year of high
school were instructed to re
gister later (April 13 and 14).
The archdiocesan information
bureau said the processing of
these new enrollees would take
several days, and figures on
them would not immediately be
available.
Judging by preliminary indi
cations, the bureau said, “the
number of boys and girls plan
ning to continue their education
in parochial schools of the area
should equal the record enroll
ment of last year.”
“Some parochial schools
within the metropolitan area
report advance registration
figures which may exceed the
peaks reached last year,” the
bureau added.
The bureau’s statement said
the enrollment situation in
Catholic high schools “also re
mains stable.” It said there

would be “no dearth of appli
cants” for vacancies in the
freshman classes of the
schools.
The statement noted that each
parochial school in the arch
diocese “has been instructed to
keep all its children already en
rolled, whether they are parish
ioners or not, as long as the
parents wish that they continue
in this school.”
But, it said, new applicants
for admission to parochial
schools would have to be “bona
fide parishioners.”
This appeared to rule out the
possibility that parents could
transfer their children from
their parish school to another
parochial school in an effort to
place them in an all-white
school or class.
“No child already enrolled
will be asked to leave to make
room for another, at either a
parochial or a private Catho
lic school,” the statement said.
Msgr. Plauche said in his
statement that “personal con
versations” with all pastors in
the greater New Orleans area
and many outside the area indi
cated that “attendance at Mass
on Sundays as well as recep
tion of the sacraments continues
to be typically good.”
Msgr. Plauche said col
lections for church support
“have remained at their
regular level, and have in
creased in some parishes.”
He then cited the response to
the Laetare Sunday Bishops Re
lief Fund collection, which had
equaled 95 per cent of the re
cord set in 1961. He added:
“Late contributions may ac
tually bring the final total up to
or above last year’s record to
tal.”

Ask Prayers
For Catholics;
See Wide Gulf
THE HAGUE, (NC) — The
Dutch Reformed Church issued
a pamphlet calling on the Cal
vinists of the Netherlands to
“pray for the Catholic brothers
and sisters in Christ.”
But it said also:
“Risking the danger of being
considered doctrinal spoil
sports, we must insist that the
abyss dividing the belief of the
Dutch Reformed Church and Ro
man Catholic dogma is deeper
than many Catholic theologians
think when they state that the
Reformation can be integrated
into the whole of Catholic
truth.”
The 34-page pamphlet, en
titled “The Attitude of the Re
formed Church towards the Ro
man Catholic Church and Its
Members,” was issued by the
General Synod of the Dutch Re
formed Church, the country’s
major Protestant denomination.
The authors stated that the pam
phlet was not to be considered
a response to a statement on
ecumenical matters published
by the Catholic Hierarchy sev
eral weeks earlier.
The Calvinist document said
that despite mixed feelings
among some Protestants to
ward increasing Protest
ant contacts, such discussions
ought to continue.

here.
Father John J. Lynch, S.J ,
of Weston (Mass ) College, told
a Carolinas-Virginia regional
meeting of Catholic hospital of
ficials that a “concerted effort”
is under way by birth control
proponents to promote the new
birth control pills.
“One feature of this project
would appear to be an attempt
to persuade Catholics that the
avoidance of pregnancy by
means of the pills is the moral
equivalent of periodic con
tinence and hence altogether
consistent with Catholic teach
ing on conjugal chastity,”
Father Lynch said (April 11).
“That this allegation is to
tally without foundation is emi
nently clear to anyone who is
theologically informed,” he de
clared.
The Jesuit said use of the birth

serious organic malfunction is
justified ‘‘if the patient truly

sterility which may follow as
an incidental and unavoidable
