Last All Girl Class Graduates At Mt. de Sales
(By J. Gregg Puster)
MACON - When the last of
the twenty-three young ladies
received their diplomas from
Rt. Rev. Msgr. Thos. I. Shee
han, following Mass and Bene
diction at St. Joseph Church in
Macon last Sunday, they brought
to a close the colorful and tra
ditional history of “Mt. De
Sales Academy,” known
throughout the South for many
years as one “of the finest
schools for Catholic girls.”
The Class of 62 is the last
“all-girl class” as the school
became co - educational three
years ago and is now known as
“Mt. de Sales High School”.
It wasn't until their soph
omore year that the members of
this graduating class realized
they were destined for an un
usual role and that their ac
tivities were to be written on
the last pages of the
“Academy’s history as a new
chronicle was beginning to un
fold.
At first, it was strange to
cheer for a De Sales football
team; and again, it seemed quite
natural to be a part of a basket
ball crowd whose team had re
placed charm and grace with
fast breaks, scoring rampages,
and a much more exciting type
of players -- boys.
During their five years at the
Mount — most of the graduating
class entered as eighth grade
students or “sub-freshmen” —
the girls easily came to accept
the boys and the novelty soon
wore off.
Of the forty girls who met as
a freshman class for the first
time in Mercy Hall, seventeen
will continue their education.
Some have moved from Macon;
several have wedding plans for
the near future; one girl, a na
tive of Havana, didn’t return
after Castro’s rise in Cuba.
There are many mementos of
this class represented in their
accomplishments, notably the
building of the school paper
from a simple mimeograph ef-

Class of 62, and Sister "Mary Felicitas, R.S.M., principal

graduating class sparked the staff which modernized the
publication.

fort to a finely printed publi
cation, amply illustrated with
photographs and even including
a sports column!
As freshmen, the ‘ ‘Ladies of
’62” participated in “Stooge
Week”, decked out as French
maids, an annual event which
has changed radically in the past
three years!
The personality of the Class
came into sharper focus with
the start of the school term
when the designation “upper
classmen” included the new
“Juniors”. The age-old custom
of having a freshman as a “little
sister” faded into oblivion
quickly — who would want to be
a “big sister” to a 165-pound
fullback?
The proms took on an added
excitement too as the social
committees hadb-o-y-s as
members as well as potential
escorts.
That year - 1960 - saw two
memorable “firsts” — a De
Sales football game with Pacelli
High of Columbus, and the first
layman as a teacher, Major
J. F. McCullough who doubled
as football coach and history
teacher — or visa versa, de
pending on whether one was an
upper or a lower classman.
The Class has had its share
of honors and passes on to the
Class of 1963 — which will see
young, rqen receiving Mt. de
Sales diplomas for the first
time — not too much of the old,
not too much of the new, but an
individuality that won’t soon be
forgotten.
At the Math Colloquim in
Sacred Heart College in Cull
man, Alabama, at the science
projects nearer home, in com
petition for academic honors,
the Class of 62 leaves an en
viable record, including five
memberships in the National
Honor Society.

WARNER ROBINS SCOUTS SERVE COMMUNITY - Throughout the Diocese there are
many Girl Scout troops sponsored by councils of the DCCW. Each year these scout troops
try to give service to their community, church and country. When the members of Girl
Scout troop 78 in Warner Robins looked for their annual service project this year they
decided to help their sponsoring organization, the Ladies Guild of Sacred Heart Parish.
They chose to make a complete layette for the Holy Father’s Storeroom under the Com
mittee on Foreign Relief. Here some of them are shown packing the layette which included
everything from blankets to booties crocheted by the girls themselves. They are L to R:
Rosalie Dembowski, Alice Wagner, Sue Silsbee, Mary Clements. They have learned early
in life to give of themselves to help those less fortunate.
