BRITISH HOUSE OF LORDS TOLD
Contraceptive Pills Might Have
Serious Long-Term III Effects
DROPPING IN FOR MASS
THE BULLETIN, June 23, 1962—PAGE 3
LONDON, (NC)—Baroness
Summerskill, woman physician
who served as a government
minister in the postwar Labor
government, told the House of
Lords that oral contraceptives
may have “the most serious
long-term ill effects.”
The Baroness, who as Mrs
Edith Summerskill was Parlia
mentary Secretary for the
Ministry of Food from 1945 to
1951 and Minister of National
Insurance in 1950-51, spoke
out\(June 6) in a debate in the
upper chamber of Parliament
on the problems of the rapid
population growth in Asia.
Lord Casey, former Austra
lian Minister for External Af
fairs, had opened the debate
by declaring that “family plan
ning” is the only solution to
the rapid increase in such
places as India.
Lady Summerskill said a wo
man who had had a number of
children might consume con
traceptive pills regardless of
the consequences, just as she
might resort to an abortionist
at the risk of her life.
“The marketing of oral con
traceptives promises a colos
sal margin of profit,” she
added. “Consumption of this
pill would not be limited to
women suffering rom a speci
fic disease. All the powerful
media of advertising and pro
paganda would be directed to
the healthy with a promise of
enjoyment without fear of con
sequences.”
Lady Summerskill, president
of the Married Women’s As-
socaition and a non-Catholic,
said she does not oppose birth
control. But she said some
members of the pharmaceutical
industry must not be encouraged
hastily to produce new products
which could only be effective
by inhibiting the ovulatory pro
cess.
Speaking of one oral contra
ceptive, she said she doubted
whether any doctor would pre
scribe it for his wife, sub
jecting her delicate glands to
the bombardment of this com
pound. British medical journals
had reported that the suppres
sion of ovulation over long per
iods was harmbul to the en
docrine system, she added. The
Family Planning Association,
had called doctors who opposed
oral contraceptives “fuddy-
duddies.” Lady Summerskill
said she was quite prepared
to accept the label because she
was in very good company
“There would be no shortage
of customers for cheap oral

contraceptives,” she added.
“The fact that an oral contra
ceptive may have the most seri
ous long-term ill effects will
not deter some women des
perately anxious to extablish
their short-term personal hap
piness.”
The Duke of Devonshire,
Commonwealth under-secre
tary, told the House the
Economic Commission for Asia
and the Far East is planning
an Asiatic population confer
ence.
He said he does not think
scientific research in relation
to contraception could be under
taken in isolation from the
causes of infertility. Much in
formation about contraception
was coming as a by-product
of research into infertility and
certain fields of cancer, he
said.
7 STEPS
NEW DECREE ON
ADULT BAPTISM
VATICAN CITY - A decree by the Sacred Congregation of
Rites authorizes Bishops throughout the world to permit the
Baptism of adults to be administered in seven separate and
distince steps. The decree was rendered on June 14.
The decree of the Sacred
Congregation noted that the ad
ministration of the Sacrament
in this manner should be based
on the amount of Christian in
struction the catechumen has
received. Attention was drawn
to the fact that it restores a
practice of ancient times and
would allow for a more order
ly preparation of the candidate
and at the same time bring
out the teaching power of the
Liturgy.
It is left to local Bishops
to determine the time lapse be
tween the separate steps.
The first step would include
the basic catechical instruction,
the solemn renunciation of er
ror and the imposition of a
name on the candidate.
The second step would be
the tasting of salt which is a
symbol of new found wisdom.
The third, fourth and fifth
step would provide for the tra
ditional Exorcisms.
The sixth step would be the

Catholic Majority Said
No Threat To Freedom
SANFRANCISCO, (NC) - The
San Francisco archdiocese has
denied as untrue a Baptist pro
fessor’s charge that the Cath
olic Church would suppress
freedom of worship if Cathol
icism became the majority rel
igion in the U.S.
The charge was made by Rob
ert A. Baker, a professor at
Southwestern Baptist Theolog
ical Seminary in Fort Worth,
Tex., on the last day (June 8)
of the 105th Southern Baptist
convention here. He stated that
when Catholics “attain the maj
ority, religious freedom must
go.”
The same day the San Fran
cisco archdiocese issued a
statement referring to the acus-
ation as “an old charge” not
borne out in the experience of
this country, or in certain.coun
tries which have a Catholic maj
ority.
The statement said, however,
that “since the attack has been

“First of all,” it continued,
“it is difficult to answer a
charge which prophesizes
what will happen . . . We can
only go on the best experience
we have. There exist already
Ireland, the Netherlands and
other countries possessing a
Catholic majority, and having
as much religious freedom as
any other country in the world.
“American cities such as
New York have had Catholic
majorities or near Catholic
majorities for some time and
no one has accused them of
being un-American.
“We state unequivocally,”
said the statement, “that wheth
er the U.S. became predomin
antly Catholic or not, we favor
the respected laws and beloved
traditions of our land which give
equal religious rights to mem
bers of all creeds. There is not
hing in the constitutional frame
work of America contrary to
the Catholic’s religious com
mitment.
“We are confident,” the
statement concluded, “that
most citizens will study the
record and all the factors in
volved with fairness and make
their judgment on the basis of
performance, not prophecy.”

Remains Of House Where St.
Peter Once Lived Uncovered
Beneath Ancient Rome Church
ROME, (NC) - The remains
of the ancient Roman house in
which St. Pete r is believed to
have lived have been uncovered
beneath the floor of the Church
of St. Pudentia.
According to tradition, St.
Peter lived for a while in Rome
in the house of Senator Pudens
whom he converted to Christi
anity along with his family. Dur
ing the centuries following St.
Peter’s death, one church after
anogher was built on the site
of the house until all traces
of it disappeared.
Now, excavations beneath the
church have uncovered a num
ber of mosaic floors and rem
nants of the walls of a first
century villa and below that
flooring dating back to Rome’s
republican era.
Archeologists of the Latium
Province Commission of Monu
ments say that the delicacy and
richness of the mosaic designs
show that the house belonged
to a wealthy and cultured family,
most probably that of Senator
Pudens.
It is known that in the se
cond century Pope St. Pius I
built an oratory on the spot
at the request of the Senator’s
children or grandchildren. In
the early centuries the church
was known as the church of
the Pudens family and only later
acquired the name of St. Pu
dentia, a daughter of the Sen
ator.
If the floors are really a
part of the Senator’s house,
they have been walked on by
a notable company of saints.
For Pudens himself is a saint,
as is his daughter Pudentia, and
his wife, Priscilla. St. Praxedes
is also belived to have been
another of St. Pudens’ daugh
ters.
Tradition also says that the
first three pontiffs after St.
Peter--Popes St. Linus, St.
Cletus and St. Clement—were
consecrated in the house of
St. Pudens by St. Peter.
The chair in which St. Peter
is believed to have sat while
staying with St. Pudens’ family
is encased in a bronze reliqu
ary above the Altar of the
Chair in St. Peter's basilica.
The reliquary was designed
by Giovanni Bernini (1598-
1680), Italian architect, sculp
tor and painter who designed
many parts of the basilica.
