SAVANNAH - Very Rev. Bede
Lightner, O.S.B., prior of the
newly formed Sacred Heart
Benedictine Priory in Savan
nah, and principal of Bene
dictine Military College will
relinquish his post at the school,
it was recently learned.
Father Bede, principal here
since 1946 will devote his full
time to duties of prior and to
supervision of the construction
of the new School and Priory
in the southern sector of the
city.
It is understood that his suc
cessor as principal will be the
Rev. Christopher E. Johann,
O.S.B.
Benedictine Military College
was established in 1902 as a
daughter institution of the Abbey
Help of Christians, Belmont,
N.C. Sacred Heart Priory was
established as a separate com
munity on June 8, 1961 with
ten Benedictines attached to it.

MACON - Sister Mary
Nicholas Pascullis, R.S.M., of
the Sisters of Mercy, Province
of Baltimore, received the
silver cross of the city of
Aix - en - Provence > near
Marseilles, France, for being
the best foreign student attend
ing Aix-Marseilles University.
Mr. Emile Delpanque, delegate
municipal counselor, made the
award.
Sister Mary Nicholas, who
received a Fulbright scholar
ship for a year’s study in
France, returns to Baltimore
on June 26. This summer Sister
will continue her studies in
the French school at Middle-
bury, Vermont. Prior to her
study in France Sister had been
teaching at Mount Saint Agnes,
Baltimore.
Sister Mary Nicholas is the
daughter of Mrs. Joseph Pas
cullis of Macon. Mrs. Pascullis
spent the past year in Rome,
where another daughter, Sister
Mary Cabrini, a Medical Mis
sion Sister, is stationed at the
Medical Mission General
Motherhouse.
At Christmas time the mother
and her two nun-daughters had
the pleasure of being together
and of visiting the Vatican and
places of special interest in
Rome. On the feast of Our
Lady of Lourdes Mrs. Pas
cullis met her daughter, Sister
Mary Nicholas, at Lourdes and
together they shared in render
ing honor and thanks to the
Mother of God on the anniver
sary of her apparition to Saint
Bernadette.
Arts degree at St. Bernard’s
College Cullman, Ala., was

bins, Georgia renewed their
wedding vowes at Sacred Heart
Church in a ceremony conduct
ed by Rev. Robert Brennan on
the occasion of their 25th wed
ding anniversary June 10. In
the afternoon the couple held
an open house for their many
friends.

a duaghter May 18-1962 in Col
umbia, South Carolina, Theresa
Odette. Mrs. Fennell is the
former Miss Odette Louise
Neimy of Coral Gobbes,
Florida.

gratulated for their profitable
term in office.

St. James
P.C.C.W. Meets
SAVANNAH - The closing
meeting for the summer months
of the St. James Parish Council
of Catholic Women was held
Monday evening June 4th.
Preceeding the meeting a
covered dish supper was en
joyed by members, guests, and
prospective members. Guests
attending included Rev. E. Perot
Fiero, Mrs. J. B. Tison, Presi
dent of St. James Home, and
School Association.
Following the supper, Mrs.
James Morel, organist for the
St. James Choir played a med
ley of songs in which the mem
bers were led in singing by
Mrs. A. L’Herureux, Sopranist
of the St. James Choir.
A brief business meeting
opened with a prayer to our
Lady Of Good Council offered
by Rt. Rev. Msgr. John D.
Toomey. All Council Com
mittees reported. Tentative
plans were discussed for our
opening meeting in September.
No further business the meeting
adjourned with a prayer by
Msgr. Toomey.

MACON -- Clem Dennis and
Robert Hicks, students at Mt.
de Sales High School, are at
tending the junior engineers’
and scientists’ summer insti
tute which is being held at
Clemson College.
The program, under the di
rection of Dr. James L.
Edwards of the Clemson De
partment of Mechanical Engi
neering, is designed for high
school students interested in
careers in engineering and
science.

ALAPAHA - St. Ann’s Altar
Society held its monthly meeting
June 1st immediately following
the First Friday Mass.
The meeting was opened with
a decade of the rosary for
world peace.
The usual order of business
was attended to and new officers
were elected for the coming
year as follows:

SAVANNAH - At graduation
exercises held Tuesday, 29
May, 1962, sixty-six students
of Blessed Sacrament School
(Sav’h.) received their eighth
grade diplomas at the hands
of Rt. Rev. Msgr. Thomas A.
Brennan, pastor of Blessed
Sacrament Church.
The sermoh was given by
Very Rev. William V. Cole
man, rector of St. John Vian-
ney Seminary, Savannah. For
high scholastic attainment and
general excellence, the fol
lowing students were awarded
scholarships: to first honor
graduate among the boys, Ben
jamin Goggins, a one year tui
tion to Benedictine Military
School, presented by the Parish
C.Y.C.; to Margaret Muller and
Ruth Owens, ex aequo degree,
a one year scholarship to St.
Vincent’s Academy (Sav’h.)
presented by the parish C.Y.C.
and a friend respectively.
The following students were
winners in recently held essay
contests: Valerie Traylor, 1st
prize in Sav’h. Deanery and
second prize in an essay con
test sponsored by the National
Council of Catholic Women;
Patricia DuRant, 1st prize in
an Irish History Contest spon
sored by the Ladies Auxiliary
of the Ancient Order of Hi
bernians; Benjamin Goggins,
third prize in the same contest.
Perfect attendance certifi
cates were awarded to the fol
lowing graduates: John Douglas,
Ruth Owens, Thomas Pounder,
Valerie Traylor and Henry
Walsh.
Sr. Mary Jude, R.S.M.,
principal and Sr. Mary DeMont-
fort, R.S.M., were eighth grade
teachers. The graduation was
held at 8 p.m. in the School
Auditorium.

At Annapolis
SAVANNAH - Thomas J.
McDonough, Jr. of Savannah
is one of 16 Georgians who
graduated from the U.S. Naval
Academy, Annapolis, Md. on
June 6.
A graduate of Benedictine
Military School, class of 1955
he attended Georgia Tech three
years before entering the aca
demy in 1958.
McDonough was commis
sioned an ensign and assigned
to the Naval Administration and
Supply School, Athens.

INSTALLS NEW OFFICERS
WARNER ROBINS - Mrs.
Francis R. Marshall was in
stalled president of the Ladies
Guild of Sacred Heart Church in
Warner Robins, Ga. recently at
a special dinner meeting. Other
officers installed were Mrs.
Donald Borschat, vice-presi
dent; Mrs. Cooper Lewis,
secretary and Mrs. Bobby E.
Pace, treasurer.
Rev. Robert J. Brennan,pas
tor of the church presided at
the installation. Mrs. Rod Mc
Donald, outgoing president, was
in charge of the meeting.
Rev. William Ahern, ass’t.,
pastor of Sacred Heart was a
special guest.
The Guild expressed appre
ciation to Mrs. McDonald for
her splendid leadership during
the past year and to her com
mittee chairmen for their co
operation. Mrs. Marshall an
nounced that the next meeting
would be held on Sept 20th
when all new committees will
be announced.

weekend from Greenville, Tenn.
and the 16th National Marble
Shooting Championships.
Georgia’s Champ, Albert
Reed (Sharpie) Sharpe, is the
pride of Sacred Heart School.
He is contending in the National
meet, June 20-24, with other
state champions.
"Sharpie" captured the State
title at Augusta the end of
May by winning eight straight
matches. He started playing
marbles in the fifth grade and
when he was a sixth grader
he finished second best in the
school tournament. The follow
ing year he won the school
tourney, finished second in the
city, and fifth in the State.
This past school year he was
a pupil of Sister Mary de Sales.
