THE CARDINAL SPELL
MAN STORY, Robert I. Gan-
aon, S. J., Doubleday, 1962,
423 pp, $5.95.
Reviewed b y Flannery
O’Connor.
To the Protestant, Cardinal
Spellman is the image of the
Church in America. It was
PORTRAIT OF A PRINCE
OF THE CHURCH. Ameri
ca’s most important Cahtolic
churchman is the subject of
a new biography, “The Cardi
nal Spellman Story’’ by Robert
I. Gannon (Doubleday, $5.95).
It is the only full-length,
authorized biography of Fran
cis Cardinal Spellman, Arch
bishop of New York. Former
President of Fordham Univer
sity, Father Gannon has known
His Eminence for twenty-five
years and was permitted un
restricted use of the Car
dinal’s personal files and dia
ries in the writing of the book.
Illustrated with 51 photo
graphs. (Jacket photo by Con
roy c 1955)

therefore with consternation
that many Catholics read the
condensed version of Fr. Gan
non’s biography of the Cardinal
in LOOK. The image created
there was of a opportunistic
individual, innocently aggres
sive, who fitted well into a
church where prelates were
more concerned with protocol
than piety. Fortunately the book
itself mitigates this image, and
leaves one wondering who pro
duced the condensation and with
what malice aforethought.
Cardinal Spellman moves
through THE CARDINAL
SPELLMAN STORY round,
smiling, efficient and indefati
gable. Largely through a few
letters written home from serv
icemen, which seem absolutely
trustworthy, the reader gets a
picture of very humble and sim
ple man, one gladly willing to
say Mass in the rain in Korea
jn Christmas day when he could
more easily have been else
where. Such glimpses are stuck
here and there in a mass of
official material, some of it
fascinating, a good deal of it
tedious. We are given many
official letters and telegrams
verbatim and sizable portions
of the Cardinal’s sermons. Car
dinal Spellman has apparently
often given as many as seven
talks a day, a feat which would
kill a lesser man, but which
must account for the ease with
which he exercises the cleri
cal gift for bringing forth the
sonorous familiar phrase of
slowly deadening effect.
If parts of the biography also
tend to anaesthetize, the rea
son may be that the book is
one long encomium which no
where questions the wisdom
of any of the Cardinal’s actions.
This tends to make the reader
f ee l that the portrait is one
dimensional and that a good
man has been slighted by being
given less weighty treatment
than he deserves, but the sub
jects of biographies should pro
perly be dead and the subject
of this one is still very much
alive. Fr. Gannon has had a
difficult job and has done it
with as much grace as could
be expected.
THE MEANING OF MAR
RIAGE, and THE MEANING OF
PARENTHOOD, both by Eugene
S. Geissler, Fides, 1962, 159
pp., each 95£ each.
Reviewed by W. L. Schmidt
It was first intended to pub
lish these two works as one
under the title Sex, Love, and
Life. The decision to publish
two books under the above ti
tles was a happy one. A great
er sense of unity and purpose
was thereby preserved on the
sugjects of Marriage and Par
enthood, although the general
idea of the original title per
vades the two.
In the book of Genesis we
read: “And God created man
to his own image; to the image
of God he created him. Male
and female he created them.’’
The tremendous meaning im
plied here, in all its implica
tions with respect to the Tri
nity, is developed in The Mean
ing Of Marriage. Marriage is
the earthly symbol of the Tri
nity in that the lover and the
loved one thrive on the spirit
of love that exists between them.
Love between man and woman
in marriage is the completion
of human nature, for this na
ture exists not solely in man,
nor solely in woman, but in
both together. The perfect or
dering of this love puts man
and woman in their proper
place with respect to each other
and to the family.
Having established the mean
ing of marriage, The Meaning
Of Parenthood develops the re
lationship that should exist be
tween parent and offspring.
There are added joys, duties
and responsibilities that begin
when the wife, who can say
with Eve when she brought
forth Cain: “I have gotten a
man through God.’’ And the
studies of the duties and re
sponsibilities, and the joys, as
the author presents them, are
very practical and down to
earth.
A title such as Sex, Love,
and Life, in todays literary
atmosphere might attract more
readers. And perhaps appear
ing as a subtitle on the cover
itself some added incentive will
be provided to a wider reading
of these two books. Their spirit
ual and practical value,
however, cannot be overempha
sized.
THE COUNCIL, REFORM AND
REUNION, by Hans Kung, Sheed

THE INTEGRATING MIND,

If the Church were equipped

quired that certain books be read,
these two would deserve a high
place on the list. The wide dis
tribution of The Council, Reform
and Reunion at this time would
endanger a realistic attitude
toward the coming council and
would perhaps stimulate the laity
to participate in it through pray
er. It would seem that an event
of this magnitude in the Church’s
life would inspire more enthusi
asm among Catholics, but the
majority, being uniformed, take
it lightly. Fr. Kung first sets
forth the need of constant re
newal in the Church, which, be
cause she has the limitation of
taking her earthly shape from the
age, is subject to constant de
formation. In the present age,
it is indispensable that we make
a “painfully critical dispassion
ate analysis, the kind of des
cription which will appear one
sided, of the weaknesses in the
Church’s position.’’ Fr. Kung
proceeds relentlessly to do this.
He is careful to point out the dif
ference between the kind of res
toration which took place during
the last period of the Council
of Trent and a genuine reform
which would imply creative
growth through a real under
standing of the Protestant Re
former’s demands. Particularly
interesting is his discussion of
the Petrine office and its re
lation to episcopal initiative, but
on every point this book
has something to offer. No Cath
olic can read it without profit
to himself and the Church.
The Integrating Mind re
emphasizes and reinforces
themes found in Fr. Lynch’s two
previous books, The Image Indus
tries and Christ And Apollo. It
is an essay against the totalis-
tic temptation - in history, pol
itics and art - which ridgidly
separates categories into
either/or choices. Fr. Lynch
makes clear that he is writing
here of contraries, not contra
dictions. The books, “in sub
stance a plea that we keep things
together that belong together,’’
is timely, though not topical, and
should serve as an antidote to
prevailing exaggerations in Am
erican political and social
thought.
TO HELP YOU SAY THE RO
SARY BETTER, by John A.
Hammes, St. Anthony Guild
Press, 1962. 143 pp., Cloth,
$2.00; Paper, $1.50.
Reviewed by Mary K. Towne.
In his introductory remarks,
in this conveniently pocket-
sized book, the author points
out that the very spirit of the
rosary lies in meditating on
these mysteries of our faith
rather than in a repetition of
prayers. Every day in the month
brings a fresh set of medita
tions. Taken primarily from
Scripture, the liturgy, and writ
ings of the saints, these con-
sice points are thought-provok
ing, and therefore bring the
mysteries into our lives. Think
ing about the Descent of the
Holy Spirit ten different days
of the month, we consider the
promise of Jesus, the effect on
the apostles and the early
church, and some aspirations
that help us realize what should
be the effect of His Presence
in our lives. The other
mysteries are similarly de
veloped.
It is not as easy to fall into
a mere repetition when there
is a freshness in the medita
tions each day. Stimulated by
the ideas presented, one may
find himself looking forward tc
his daily rosary.
Dr. James A. Hammes, au

the Rosary Better,” is associ
