1 Best Forecast Of Ecumenical Council Found In Pontiffs Words (The following article is one of a dozen special articles by the head of the Rome bureau of the N.C.W.C News Service giving a preview of the ecum enical council which opens next October 11. The author served as a member of the council’s Preparatory Secretariat for the Communications Media. By Msgr. James I. Tucek (N.C.W.C. NEWS SERVICE)) VATICAN CITY,—The best forecast of the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council can be found in the words of His Holi ness Pope John XXIII. This is true because it was he who first conceived the idea for the council, he alone who had the power to convoke it, and he alone who by his approval can give it an ecumenical character. Almost four years have pass ed since Pope John first an nounced his intention to convoke an ecumenical council. Not a week has gone by since that time in which he has not writ ten or spoken on the subject. An accurate picture of what the council will be—not in its details but in its pervading spirit, motivation and hopes— can therefore be drawn from the monumental record of the Supreme Pontiff’s spoken and PAPAL AUDIENCES GIVE INSIGHTS TO COUNCIL - During audiences such as this, His Holiness Pope John XXIII has himself given the best and clearest insights into what the coming Second Vatican Council will be like. Above, he is shown welcoming a group of dignitaries from a new African nation. On one such occasion, the Pontiff said: “The work of the new ecumenical council is really directed entirely toward giving back to the face of the Church of Jesus the splendor and the pure and simple lines of its birth, and to present it as the Divine Founder made it, without stain or defect.’’ -(NC Photos) Threat Of Deformed Child No Justification Of Abortion VATICAN CITY, (Ra dio, NC) - Vatican Radio has commented that even the threat of a deformed child cannot authorize abortion. (The Vatican Radio commen tator spoke against a back ground of widespread press and radio comment on the case of a U.S. woman, Mrs. Sherri Finkbine of Phoenix, Ariz., who is seeking an abortion for fear her baby will be deformed be cause she took thalidomide, a drug feared to be responsible for the deformation of babies. The commentator did not men tion Mrs. Finkbine.) The Vatican Radio commen tator said: “It is understandable that a mother who is the prey of anx iety because of the unhappiness she foresees for her own child can wish for its death, and thus subjectively transform into a testimony of love her desire to suppress the life which grows within her. “But it is not permissible that this subjective aberration be turned into a moral idea of life, into a moral principle. “Homicide is never an act of kindness. Love always chooses life and never death. The instinct of preservation urges man to face any kind of motivation as long as he can keep his life. Love for those dear to one leads people to make sacrifices and toward a sublime dedication to preserve as long as possible the weakest breath of life. “From the first moment of his conception, every human being has all the rights in herent in a human being. There is nothing which can justify his direct and voluntary sup pression, not even the purpose of saving the life of the mother.’’ The commentator added: “Human life is sacred and all respect for human life dis appears when one tries to draw a line of distinction between its different theological phases or the gravity of its infirmity. This would open the way to any kind of decision, any kind of crime. It is logical that one would be tempted to extend the applica tion of such a vague and in definite principle to all people of all ages who have been aff ected by mental or physical incapacities.’’ VATICAN COUNCIL Bishop Celebrates Mass In Protestant Church, Voices Hopes For Christian Unity TAIZE, France, (Radio, NC) —Bishop Lucien Lebrun of Au- tun voiced hopes for Christian unity when he celebrated Mass at the opening of the Church of Reconciliation of the Protestant monastic communi ty here. The new church was built by young volunteer workers from Germany as a gesture of friendship for France and in gratitude for the aid given by the Taize community to refu gees from the nazi regime. The church was opened (Au gust 5 to 6) in the presence of Catholic, Protestant and Or thodox churchmen from many nations. The church is divided into two sections. The one is in tended for prayers for Chris tian unity and the second for silent prayer. Protestant and Orthodox services marked the opening (August 5) as well as the Mass offered (August 6) by Bishop Lebrun in the church’s crypt. The Protestant prior of the Taize community had written to Bishop Lebrun before the opening: “To show that this church will be in particular a pilgri mage place for the reconcilia tion of Christians, a crypt has been opened so that Catholic Mass may be offered there.’’ A number of Protestants, in cluding ministers, attended Bi shop Lebrun’s Mass. The Bishop said in his ser mon: “Nothing is impossible for God. That is our hope as we wait for the gift of unity.’’ Methodists Name Observers, Alternates NEW YORK, (NC) - The world’s 13 million Methodists will be represented at the Sec ond Vatican Council by three official observers and six alter nates. The council’s “chief business will concern the increase of the Catholic Faith and the renewal along right lines of the habits of Christian people in the adapting of ecclesiastical dis cipline to the needs and con ditions of the present times.” (July 25, 1959). “The Church will bring itself into step with modern times. (July 29, 1960). “The council intends to be the starting point of a general renewal; a new vigorous dif fusion of the holy Gospel in the whole world, with the Church spreading it, making it known and explaining its teachings.’’ (July 27, 1960). “We have thought more than once of what should be done in regards to this undertaking (liturgical reform) of Our pre decessor. And, having examined the matter well, We have come to the decision that it would be best to put before the Fa- Council Fathers St. Ambrose, Bishop of Milan who died in 397 was a fore most doctor of the Church and a bitter opponent of the Arian heresy which was con demned finally at the First Council of Constantinople in 381. Although Ambrose did not take part in the council, he was instrumental in rid ding most of western Chris tendom of the heresy that denied the Divinity of the Holy G^ost. Here, he is shown \csted for Mass, his mitre at his feet. He holds i i his right hand the scourge, symbol of discipline; and in the other a scroll with the first words of his famous Paschal Hymn, “The Eternal Gifts of Christ the King.” (NC Photos) Urges Public School Prayers ELIZABETH, N. The (Aug. 2) resolution ask ed Congress to approve the say ing of prayers in the schools. thers of the future council the principal fundamentals con cerning liturgical reform and that We should not do more than reform the rubrics of the breviary and the Roman missal.” “In a spontaneous manner and with vast applications, the Second Vatican Council seeks to succeed in expressing that which Christ still represents, that which He represents today more than ever before. . . . It will not be a complete re view of Catholic teachings, but special attention will be given to those points which refer to fundamental truths, which are contested or which are in con flict with the contradictions of modern thought, the results of old errors which are now ex pressed differently.” “This will be a demonstra tion of the Church, ever living and ever young, which feels the rhythm of the times and which in every century beau tifies itself with new splen dor. . .At a time when generous and increasing efforts are being made in various sectors to re build that visible unity of Chris tianity which corresponds to the wishes of the Divine Redeemer, it is quite natural that the forth coming council should provide premises of doctrinal clarity and mutual charity which will quicken the wish in our separa ted brothers for the desired return to unity and it will pave the way. “Finally, to a world which is lost, confused and troubled t by the constant threat of new , and frightful conflicts, the , forthcoming council must offer a possibility for all men of good will to turn their thoughts and intentions toward peace. . . These are the fruits which We so much expect from the coun cil.” The spirit of the council, he said, will be “in the tradition of all the councils that marked the triumph of truth.” It will be furthermore characterized, he added, by the attributes of the Good Shepherd. In ail of the Pope’s spoken and written words on the coun cil there are constant refer ences to what he longs to see as its results. There are: Christian unity, peace and so cial order and “to see all people enter on the way of truth, charity and peace.” But Pope John XXIII, who knows his Church history ex traordinarily well, has been realistic enough to acknowledge that “those who continue to work after Us will be able to gather the council’s fruits more abun dantly.” ATLANTA WHY NOT SAVE???
