983 Negroes Are Members
Of 109 Sisterhoods In U.S.
BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss., (NC)
—A survey has desclosed that
983 Negroes are members of
109 communities of Catholic
nuns in the United States.
Tho total includes 840 pro
fessed Negro nuns, who have
taken final vows to religious
life; 91 novices, 52 postulants
and candidates.
The survey was conducted by
the Divine Word Messanger,’
monthly magazine published
here by missionary priests of
the Society of the Divine Word.
The study was made among 743
motherhouses and provincial
offices of sisterhoods in the
United States.

ily Sisters of New Orleans, 301
of whom are professed Sisters.
The check showed 325 Negroes
are Oblate Sisters of Provi
dence of Baltimore, 297 of whom
are professed. There are 82
members of the all-Negro
Franciscan Handmaids of the
Most Pure Heart of Mary of
New York City, 66 of whom are
professed, the survey showed

ters of Cornwells Heights, Pa.,
have 12 Negro nuns, ten of
whom are professed, it was
reported.
Twenty - two separate di
visions of Franciscan nuns, ex
cluding the Franciscan Hand
maids, have 61 Negro Sisters,
46 of whom are professed, the
survey showed.
There are 25 Negro members
among 11 separate divisions of
Dominican Sisters, 19 of whom
are professed, it was reported.
The Baltimore and St. Paul,
Minn., provinces of the Sisters
of Our Lady of Charity of the
Good Shepherd reported there
are 20 Negroes among its pro
fessed members. Four divi
sions of Benedictine nuns
reported a total of 18 Negro
members, 13 of whom are pro
fessed.
Eight divisions of the Sisters
of Charity have 15 Negro mem
bers, 12 of whom are professed,
the survey disclosed, while four
divisions of Discalced Carmel
ites have five Negro members,
two of whom are professed.
The remaining 82 Negro nuns
are members of 54 other religi
ous communities.

MACON - Funeral services
were held for Mrs. Harry David
Ambrose, 19, last Monday at
St. Joseph’s Church with Rev.
Sean O’Rourke offering re-
queim Mass.
Mrs. Ambrose died from
burns she received July 11 in
a gas explosion in her residence
which is still under investiga
tion.
Mrs. Ambrose is the former
Donna Marie Tuggle, a native
of Missouri and a resident of
Macon for only a short time.
She is survived by her husband,
Harry David Ambrose, and her
parents, Captain and Mrs.
Donald M. Tuggle of Pease Air
Froce Base, New Hampshire.

48, former East Dublin Police

Mr. Hanvey has been in ill
health for several years, and
following his discharge from the
services in World War II, he
moved to Dublin where he serv
ed on the police force until
his retirement due to poor
health.
He is survived by his wi
dow, the former Miss Johnnie
Mae Myers; a brother, Dave
Hanvey of Brooklyn, N. Y.;
and three sisters, Mrs. Frank

has been named regional super
ior of a new province of the
St. Francis Xavier Foreign
Mission Society which covers
the United States and Mexico.
The American branch of the
Xaveriac Missionary Fathers
was founded here 15 years ago.
Its members work in Boston
and Milwaukee archdioceses,
the Worcester, Mass., diocese,
and the community recently
opened a school for 900 boys in
Mazatlan, Mexico.
