Holy See Gives Final Approval To
Conference Of U. S. Women’s Superiors
DENVER, Colo., (NC) - The
Holy See has given final and
official approval to the Confer
ence of Major Religious Super
iors of Women in the United
States.
The Vatican’s degree of ap
proval declares that “the very
nature of the religious life, the
serious responsibilities taken
on in the exercise of the apos-
tolate and the changed condi
tions of the times demand fed
erations (and) impose unity.’’
The Conference of Major
Religious Superiors of Women
was established in 1956 to fur
ther the spiritual welfare and

women religious in the U.S.
Its national secretariat is in
Webster Groves, Mo.
The Holy See's official ap
proval of the conference was
granted in a decree of the Sac
red Congregation of Religious,
signed by Valerio Cardinal Val
eri. Perfect of the congregation,
and Father ( now Archbishop-
elect) Paul Philippe, O.P., its
secretary.

was made by Father Bernard
Ransing, C.S.C., moderator of
the conference and an official
of the Sacred Congregation of
Religious.
The Vatican degree outlines
six functions for the conference:
—To promote better under
standing of religious life, and
work for “the proper religious
apd apostolic formation” of Re
ligious.
—To encourage among re
ligious communities “a greater
mutual understanding and a
more spontaneous mutual as
sistance.’’
—To make “the apostolic
spirit and work” of religious
communities more effective.
—To bring about “the closest
possible cooperation” with the
hierarchy.
—To “foster fraternal rela
tions between the Religious on
the one hand and the secular
clergy and Catholic lay organi
zations on the other.”
—To “represent religious
institutes before ligitimate
authority, both ecclesiastical
and civil.”
The decree said women’s re
ligious communities in the U-S.
are “morally subject” to the
conference, and the conference
"should be kept informed about
them and should coordinate
their various undertakings.”
Mother Mary Consolatrice is
national chairman of the sup
eriors’ conference, and Mother
Mary Luke is national vice
chairman. Mother Mary Flor
ence is national executive sec
retary.

VATICAN CITY, (Radio, NC)
- His Holiness Pope John XXIII
has sent a message of condo
lence to Iran's ruler, Mohamed
Reza Shah Pahlavi, following
the earthquakes that have taken
thousands of lives in his
country.
He has also allocated
$10,000 for the relief of the
stricken nation.
Pope John said that he shared
the sorrow of the whole world
for the Iranian nation and that
its people were in his thoughts
and prayers.

Sidney J. Puster
MACON - Funeral services
were held Tuesday for Sidney
J. Puster who passed away in
St. Louis September 9 after a
brief illness.
Mr. Puster, 82, was the father
of J. Gregg Puster of Macon,
and was a retired accountant,
a past member of the Knights
of Columbus, St. Louis Coun
cil, and a member of the Holy
Name Society, the Layman’s
Retreat League, and up until
suffering a heart attack two
weeks ago, had been active
in promotion of the Sacred Heart
Hour and the League of the
Sacred Heart.
Mr. Puster is survived by
his widow, Mrs. CJotilde A.
Puster, nee Friehoff, five
grandchildren, Carolyn A. Pus
ter of St. Mary’s Hospital in
Athens, Delores Puster, a stu
dent at the University of Geor
gia, James G., Stephen J., and
Eugene F. Puster, all of Macon.
"Small World
PONTIAC. Mich., (NC) - A
news story carried in the Cath
olic press last June has resul
ted in an interesting addition
to the “small world” collec
tion of stories.
The story told of the gradu
ation of Mary Ann Humphreys,
10th and last child of the Louis
Humphreys family to graduate
from St. Frederick’s High
School here.
Recently, Mary Ann receiv
ed a letter from Ulysses, Kan.
The writer was named Mary
Ann Humphreys. Her godmother
had sent her a clipping of the
Pontiac story which appeared
In a Catholic newspaper.
As it turned out, the Kansas
Mary Ann was also the 10th
child in her family, and like
the Michigan Mary Ann, her
oldest brother’s name is Bill.
Both also have brothers named
Joe and Bob.
